I find that line fascinating actually, cause I was reading up recently on chess AI and one thing that really distinguishes them from human players is that the AI isn't afraid to retreat. For humans it's a psychological thing, you don't want to feel like a previous move was a mistake and that you're losing progress and going back to square one, so where possible even grandmasters will opt for moving other pieces up instead. AI doesn't give a fuck, if it sees that running puts it in a better position long term it runs, it doesn't have a sense of shame over it. This dude is dropping some major wisdom.

@@mp8359 you probably don’t play chess. There’s a point in the game where all you have left are stupid moves that don’t actually do anything, before the final win move actually plays. Any good chess player can see when it’s at that point and often resign because there’s no point to just spending another 30 seconds moving a pawn aimlessly while the final moves play when there’s no decisions left. It has nothing to do with the person playing, that’s just how the game works. It’s like when you’re playing monopoly and someone owns every single property. Maybe you can get one or two more moves but the game is already over, so they’re stupid moves, just prolonging the inevitable fate that’s already been determined.

Only comment I'd say is that these guys are not hustlers! I work nearby and often walk through. They just sit and wait for someone to play them. You know what you are getting yourself into...an actual game of chess with a skilled player, wit a little $$$ on the line. Sometimes I watch the games. I've never seen anyone being disrespectful. Also, it seems that the chess players are happy to teach others that are not as skilled and it's a cool little community. I even saw one guy, helping a boy, maybe 8 years old, fine tune his abilities. Anyhow, maybe showing some more respect to these guys would've been nice in the vid. All in all though, was entertaining to watch the chess playing. Hope you still gave this guy a few bucks, especially since you posted the video on youtube with some 1.6+ million views now. A lot of these guys aren't really "hustlers", they just love playing chess. Maybe they will ask to play for money so they can get a breakfast from mcdonalds or something but its not like they are trying to scam ppl. Inmates play a TON of chess, because its one of the only fun items you can buy from the commissary (chess/checkers and playing cards). Anyway, some guys will play chess with their cell mates all day long for months or years at a time and they develop a serious passion for chess. Also trash talk is very common but its friendly and they use it to gain psychological advantage (making u think ur playing too slow or have already made a mistake) or to find out what type of person you are if you are new.

He isn't cheating or anything but he isn't playing by the conventional rules. Only 30% of it is actually skill in chess and 70% is skill in manipulation. I recon if he wasn't allowed to talk then he would loose more money than he gained. The people who would bet money on winning are actually people who think they are good at chess and probably are. That means on average they are probably equally matched in skill level but where this guy has the advantage is in mind games. He tried to build trust and then suggest "bad" or not so good moves at critical parts in the game and he also tried to use techniques such as trying to make the opponent rush at critical parts by singing. I have tried some of these techniques myself and have managed to beat people who are better at chess than me just by making them rush and therefore increasing the chance of making a mistake. I have also tried pretending that I made a mistake (by sacrificing a piece like he tried to do with the rook, he also tried it with his knite and the rook king fork pin) so they would take the bait and miss a better move. Don't be fooled they do this for a job so they are really good at it.

But why do they call them chess hustlers? Hustlers to me has a very negative connotation, like they're cheating, or they're con artists or playing shell games or something. As far as I'm concerned these guys make an honest living, it's a simple one on one fair game, right? I'm not a chess player, so am I missing something? Professional poker players don't get called "poker hustlers," so the "hustler" designation seems unearned to me.
@SorryIBlackedOut
@SorryIBlackedOut 5 жыл бұрын
Hustler is more on the designation of those who are trying to make money off of what they know. It’s more like they know the rules, the prices, and the game so they make a living doing what they know. There’s no hard feelings trying to hustle someone for money in a game of chess.

We have to switch colors like they do in the tournaments. At least a best two out of three. That way we can both have the advantage of going first." People should really mow their own grass before they start complaining about how tall their neighbor's grass is. Attacking someone's use of grammar is one of the lowest forms of trolling ( ;) I don't mind dropping to their level, otherwise I wouldn't be here? Just thought I'd return the favor.), but worse when that's their only attack strategy because it reveals their level of intellect or lack there of in most cases. "Stupid" was a poor choice of wording (Especially in this case, as it insinuates arrogance or superiority which is not the case.). Besides, grammar is not always a reliable measure of of one's character or intellect. that's victim mentality, he wasn't being villainized he was seen as a high level player with street smarts, a veteran per se, that's what hustler in this context conotates.

@@floggyWM1 Exactly, I am well aware of real hustlers. This man was a dude in the park playing chess. No trickery or dishonesty. It's a shame to see him being painted as a hustler, "who often berates and insults you" etc etc. The man cant defend himself nor is he getting any of the ad-sense revenue from the 1.5 million views...

I wonder how it would've gone for Black, if he wouldn't have traded queens but rather moved his queen from QD2 to QG5. What an entertaining match though!

Were y'all playing for money? If not then he could have been hustling you so you would win and play the next game for money. He seems like he's more just having fun than trying to win.

There used to be a chess hustler in Newark, NJ named "Master Gwynn." He beat everyone in both speed chess and regular chess. Was said to have played Bobby Fischer to a tie. Haven't seen him in over a decade. Wonder if he's still alive.

I highly doubt it though, he maybe able to beat most club players, but tieing with Bobby? And he is even unheard of? Is there games notation or anything? If not then playing against Bobby is probably just a story of imagination.

the only thing that felt hustlerish was the guy on the phone talking about his girl having no food or money, very loudly like he was almost a plant trying to throw off the other player, sorry if im off base but that felt and sounded very planted like it was meant to throw off the challenger
