When he was in the army, he was stationed in Alaska and started painting the scenes around the state that he saw. It got to where he made more selling his paintings than his army salary, so he didnt re-enlist and painted full time.

Bob Ross almost always puts snow on the mountains, so he was requested to make a painting of a mountain without snow. So he basically proves he can do it, then went right back to what makes him happy painting, and added the snow back in.
