Founded in 1795 South Lebanon is the oldest town in Warren County, Ohio. Originally known as the Village of Deerfield but was changed to South Lebanon in 1871 as there was another "Village of Deerfield" up in Portage County, Ohio which caused confusion with the mail delivery.
South Lebanon is most notable for the TV commercials in the 1960s for "Kash's Big Bargain Barn". A former business known as Fred's Mushroom Products Company which was the largest producer of Mushrooms in the Midwest. South Lebanon was home to "Duff's Famous Smorgasbord" which was a popular chain of restaurants in the 1970s. The King Family who established the Peters Cartridge Company in Kings Mill once owned a large farm in South Lebanon before moving to and establishing "Kings Mill".
The original cemetery for South Lebanon sat down along the river where the ball fields are now located. Due to frequent flooding, in the 1950s the headstones were moved up on the hill to Deerfield Cemetery. Strangely though the bodies were left in place and still sit under the ballfields to this day.

Thanks for showing the "Snook" house. My grandmother Nellie Snook Wise sold it prior to wwII. It was the house of my Great Grandfather John M. Snook. Many of the Snook's, Keever's and Vandervoorts ancestors are buried in Deerfield Cemetery

I used to live in south lebanon as a teenager for about a year and a half. Went to high school at Kings Mills. From what Ive seen here and on google earth, much has changed since the early 60's, but I do remember Kash's bargain barn, in fact lived about a half a block from it. lol

The house that was Cash's was orginally my Great Grandfather House, John M. Snook. My Grandmother Nellie Snook Wise, his daughter sold it about 1939 to the Hudson Family. The other Snook house, I believe was My Great Great Uncle's house, either Albert or Rex Snook. The bargain barn that Cash Amburgy used was the barn that my Great Grandfather came in one day, and said "Old Tom cat just had kittens.

Hi Joe, I'm the guy in the video. My aunt actually lives in the John M. Snook house. I've been trying to track down modern day members of the Snook family for a book I've been writing on South Lebanon's history. I would love to talk to you sometime if you would. You can get up with me on Facebook, or e-mail me at willsweptline@yahoo.com

I think this is the second of your videos I've watched. I just subscribed. Thank you for doing this. I never knew when I played Little League back in the 70s that I was playing on top of dead folks! Maybe that's why I never played well down there. I'll go with that instead of I wasn't very good ANYWHERE!

No, the place he is talking about is across from the old South Lebanon Elementary School. It is now a park a picnic shelter and a small skate park. In the 60's to the mid 70's it was the only ball field in town. The fireworks are launched from the new ball fields next to the river.

My mom was born and raised there. Shes buried in that cemetery. I remember of that town when visiting grandparents me and my nephew was only driven there at night and our heads had to be down in car before we got to the town. Then when grandparents ordered like hoagies we had to go to the back house when delivery showed up till they gone. Cause why ?we were the brown children. My mother had biracial children. But at least they loved my mother and welcomed us ,despite the risk of some idiot seeing us and burning down there home.
