All of his answers (not just in this questioning) show that his drug use, drinking, & inexplicable stress from Amber are delayed and not clear cut answers that most would give. Oh yeah, I've had 12 stiches on my middle finger after I climbed over a fence and coming down the ring on my finger got caught on the fence and broke, cutting my finger. I'm never wearing rings again! Luckily the finger healed alright, but it was a turning point in my life when I decided that I will start practising seriously while I still can. I can't even imagine hurting my hands voluntarily.

Many people have made a big deal about how Johnny was given so much support while Amber was being hated on. Guess why? Because a LOT of people have known someone like Amber, and we recognize the signs - narcissistic, histrionic, borderline, Little miss can't be wrong... it doesn't matter what diagnosis they have, they're hell to have for a partner. It's not that people are just sticking up for Johnny because he's a better actor, more likeable person, has integrity, etc., it's that Amber's personality shines through, and anyone who has seen that bullcrap once will recognize it again.

I think he wanted to paint a clear picture of what he did instead of generalizing it. Also, he’s not riding on the victim card to gain sympathy like the defendant, which says a lot about his maturity as a person. We’ve all been victimized and some of us have learned to move beyond the trappings of the role. It doesn’t mean we do not feel sorrows but it is vital to grow from the mistakes.

When I heard the testimony about how he welcomed her friends to the point that they actually lived in penthouses right beside them on the same floor and always was very kind to them and getting them whatever they needed and encouraging spending time with Amber, I knew he was not an abuser. Abusers focus on isolating their victims from friends and family so they can have more control and so the abuse won't be noticed. Johnny did the opposite. He opened himself right up. That's not what a wife beater does

He was always the nicest guy to his girlfriends but not to her. And she did it with other guys that had never been violent with anyone before or after dating her.

Sorry, just watched this and wasn't aware of the details. This does show the disconnect that happens in the midst of trauma and to use your own blood that way, haphazardly, indicates a sense that you are no longer clinging on to survival, or that (what he seems to be suggesting) writing down and remembering the worst aspects in a moment of clarity is more important for your future survival than whatever blood loss is occurring that you would normally respond to if you felt safer.

Yes, that sounds probable. But also someone who isn't quite attached to reality due to drugs and / or alcohol could be prone to doing something like that too. This is why it would have been so much better for him if he'd been able to stay sober so that people wouldn't assume that what was going on was mutual abuse. And he needed all his wits about him with a person like that around him, so taking anything that weakened him either physically or mentally was a big mistake.

Note he starts using "you" instead of "I" when describing his experiences. This is evidence of trauma. Its a way to distance yourself from the trauma. Its speaking in third person in a way. He said "When YOU are in a relationship and YOU give YOUR truth to THIS person, its shocking" he is subconsciously making it an abstract or hypothetical statement because it was traumatic. It hurts too much to say "I was in a relationship where I gave her my truth and it was shocking...." I used to do this in therapy. Started using "you" my therapist would stop me and and tell me to use "I" or "me" because I was describing my own experience. For me to accept it, work though it I had to own it as being personal. Not an abstract "when you (meaning anyone) are being abused ....."

@Liz Muschinski hes been through rehab/detox several times.When you have been using as long as he has (since he was 11) its sort of hardwired in, he went through puberty as an addict, his brain probably never developed proper pathways for 'happy hormones' like dopamine so its likely to be harder than for most. Amber reportedly sabotaged at least two attempts to go clean or dry.

I definitely felt myself empathizing with him. A lot of victims of abuse smile at inappropriate times because abusive parenting teaches you it's not ok to feel what you're feeling. Your pain doesn't matter. So a smile when something is painful becomes the automatic habit in an attempt to fit in with the rest of the world.

I think Johnny is ashamed of his drug use that’s why his response is so messed up. As a recovering addict/alcoholic and also a survivor of significant trauma I disliked answering any questions about it because it brought up so much shame.

Exactly. There's so much stigmatizing and stereotyping of drug users as automatically violent or toxic, I'd be dodgy and defensiveness as hell too if I knew everybody was going to make me out to be a monster when I really didn't hurt anybody but myself. And Johnny even is upfront in his testimony that he sometimes felt he was letting himself and others down during his recovery, so you can tell he's self-aware and feeling shame about it.

I was thinking the same thing. You can tell he does not want to talk about it because he is definitely not proud of it. You can see it on his face that he's ashamed. Too many people look at drug addicts as these lowly people, and I have heard people like that say some terrible things that I don't want to repeat because it is awful to say about another human being. I agree Johnny is an introvert despite being a well-known actor. Before Amber, what did people really know about his personal life? Now people are bringing up his personal life, like his drug use and it is for the whole world to see.

Especially since he probably knows that a lot of people think less of those who have struggled with addiction. I imagine he never wanted something so personal to be public knowledge, not just because he is a private person in general, but because it opens him up to criticism, which he may struggle to deal with. Having lawyers try to frame your past drug use as evidence of you being an abusive partner would be extremely triggering for someone who already struggles with self shame due to that drug use. I think a lot of people in recovery for a mental health issue can relate to internalizing the negative opinions that people in their life shared with them, and/or that society has perpetuated. I know that I can! Obviously, this is just speculation based on my own experiences, so I'm not trying to make any claims about what Johny is and isn't feeling. I'm just providing an example of what he "could" be feeling.

This is exactly what I thought too. I had my mother doing this to me. One of the thing she would do would be beat me up, throw me down the stairs and then call the police telling she was abused and beaten up by me. I was a teenager. I never reacted to this psicological terrorism because I was the oldest of 3 kids and I wanted to be there to be the one to protect them and also because as a kid, even if like that, I was loving my mother. As an adult now I have real troubles to see people take advantage of others or abuse others. Can’t stay silent. If you have PTSD or a history as Jonny Depp has in his childhood, you need great power to remain calm andcentered in a situation as such. I loved him as an actor before and now that I know his story and have seen his power to stay strong in this case I have even more respect for him as a man. Thank you Mr Depp for have given the demonstration that women too can be beaters and abusers in the family. I believe you planted a seed for the change of history in this field. I wish this world one day will be finally kind to the sensible souls.

I agree that she’s vile, but I’m not so sure his assessment on the smile right there is accurate. I feel like he might’ve jumped to a conclusion on this one. If you notice, her smile comes AFTER her attention is drawn to her lawyer. I don’t know if what he’s saying is that they’re coaching her in that exact moment and she let the smile slip, but it sounds like he’s saying she’s smiling directly at what Johnny is saying at that moment (about losing his contract because of her lies). Again, I think she’s vile too but I have to be unbiased because I have a scientific propensity. I genuinely feel the smile came as a reaction from whatever look/gesture/comment her lawyer gave her (which could’ve simply been a note on that paper she’s writing on). But again, if he’s saying it was a coaching gesture they gave her at that moment, then I feel that’s just as bad as smiling directly at his pain as he’s reliving it on the stand. EDIT: notice how it looks as tho Amber’s attention is drawn to what the lawyer is writing. Lawyers know how to make “invisible” gestures to their clients when in court. Eye contact is not necessary. But again, the content of the gesture could easily be (and is most likely) something negative about JD. What’s also a possibility is that the lawyer was simply writing something to discredit his testimony (because they take notes the entire time when they listen to the other side conducting their examination of the witnesses) and whatever she was writing amused Amber (which again would be something at JD’s expense). I’m merely saying the smile was directed at the lawyer and not in reaction to what JD was saying on the stand in that exact moment.

Then you will love to know after the divorce with JD she is dating a reporter, who is banned from the court for handing her lawyers doctored evidence, DURING THE TRIAL that the opposing counsel doesnt have knowledge of. And that, is illegal on many levels. Ontop of that she was tweeting during the time of the trial when the Judge states that all phones should be off unless you are part of the legal counsel. The hole is deeper than you could even imagine because she found someone willing to help her destroy JD life further in any way they can.

As an abuse survivor I often over explain myself. I've even had my siblings say that it's annoying how much I talk because I'm just trying to explain my thought process of how I got to my conclusions so that nobody can accuse me of lying or being stupid or anything. My biggest one was I was constantly told I was an idiot and so it made me doubt my own thoughts and whether or not if I was smart enough to understand things. So I now overly explain just to make sure that everybody's on the same page that I do understand what we're talking about. And that is what I felt was happening with Johnny Depp. Obviously I can't confirm as I am not Johnny Depp and I wasn't there in the situation or the moment but from my own experiences I felt very connected to the way he was talking and explaining.

One thing that also spoke to me was when Spidey was talking about Depp playing Sparrow in the courtroom. I am a practicing writer and have a few characters that I find strong. When I am in a situation, I find my self pretending to be that character in my head because to me, that character is more equipped to deal with what is happening than I am. It's a way to make yourself feel comfortable and in 'control' by distancing yourself from something that you're scared of. IMO, Johnny is bringing a bit of Jack Sparrow into the courtroom to help him distance himself from the pain and the openness that he has to display on the stand.

I think there is a universal response to specific types of trauma where people inherently feel as if they won't be believed, so they explain everything in detail by default, which I relate to personally. Perhaps that is covered by the KZbinr's comment about establish a baseline. If someone always over-explains, it's not inherently deceptive.

Yeah I was a sexual abuse survivor since 7, I often had very emotional breakdowns with my dad (after 20 once he knew what had been going on) where I would be upset cause he felt we always talked about what happened and I felt always shut down when I needed to let it out. Also, I can’t imagine a victim staring down a man she’s afraid of that dominantly. That’s not something a victim does, that’s was abusers do. They enjoy the power they have over their victim. Most victims never go to trial cause of having to be in the same room as their abuser and telling what they did to them. Amber is the abuser and she’s a disgusting person

Him forgetting about the burn is 100% in line with being abused. I suffered from horrific DV 20 years ago and when you mentioned the cigarette burn I flashed back to when I remembered my perpetrator bit me on the face, I still have the scar yet I’d forgotten. Even after all this time I get new flashbacks coming through via smells, sounds, tastes, accents, dreams, places etc It’s hard to clarify what happened when because extreme abuse all rolls into one.

Omggggg SAME! I didn’t remember my abuser putting out a cigar in between my buttocks until some jerk asked me over 2 decades later (about the burn scar), “eww… do you have an STD?!” whilst being intimate. Now I can never forget it cuz the trauma I now have from that guy accusing me of having an STD even after I made us both get tested cuz I take that stuff seriously. He went on and on about why I was so adamant about getting tested and that’s why he reacted that way. I'm acquainted with a former employee of his. Just in casual conversation, I got the impression that he's submissive and polite by nature, and non-confrontational. He also came off as a very responsible employer and parent. What I saw in his testimony was sadness, mixed with a healthy degree of shame, embarrassment, and a whole lot of righteous anger. No, he's not a saint, but not many of us are. But if I saw Amber Heard heading my direction, I'd run the other way.

Let me tell you right now, someone abused, BEGGS AND PRAYS that the abuser will LEAVE! And you NEVER approach the abuser. Ever! There is a video, of JD being angry in the kitchen. And she approaches him. Antagonizing him. No way in hell, would a victim of abuse, do that, to the person that abuses them. She is an abuser. Period. Is Johnny perfect? No. But show me one person who is. So he is an addict. So is she! So what? So, did she not know he was an addict? I knew. So she knew when she got with him. Abusers love to torment. Love to put you down. Shatter your self esteem. But, he got clean. But she refused to. I know this is about body language. But their words told me the truth. I myself am a male survivor of DA from an abusive wife, as well as an imtrovert. I am not a body language expert, but what I can tell you is that Johnny Depp was being specific and detailed [I do not know what "overspecific" means] to seek validation. Fundamentally, abuse suvivors have that need for validation, because we went through so much non-sensical trauma that we have a very hard time convincing others. My own family does not even fully believe me.

I have to comment about the smile Johnny gets when he tells how the bottle flew past his head. Having experienced a similar situation, I can tell you without a doubt, that his smile was due to his thought that he was very lucky it hadn't hit him in the head. Another reason why he is so detailed & explains so much: When we're constantly arguing with someone with a mental disorder, we try to use logic but they don't think logically, so we try & try, over explaining ourselves. Someone who was abused or neglected as a child, mentally or physically, will often explain themselves too much, in great detail. A person who as a child had a parent with bpd or npd, will often explain themselves too, in great detail.

This analysis hits hard, seeing the similarities I share in Johnny's behaviors and thought processes after also living through abuse makes me analyze myself as well. I live with PTSD now, and the fact that he forgot about the cigarette burn made me laugh in a sad empathy, because I also have those "oh yeah, this insane thing happened to me, I just forgot to add it to the list" moments. In a bright side kind of way, having been hurt makes you care more deeply for others, and through healing, makes you a stronger person. Johnny has become a hero of mine for his strength in sharing his truth and experiences, in the face of such horror, to wake up another day and to stand up for himself, it helps me and I assume many others to stand up for ourselves too.

If you listen to his sister’s testimony she explains how Johnny ran to hide when he faced abuse as a child. This is why she would book an extra room for him when he traveled with Amber. Depp also references his creativity and he likes to write, I think when his finger was cut he started to write on the wall because he couldn’t leave, this was his way to cope with this traumatic event, which only proves when facing danger he doesn’t fight, he tries to run, he wants to avoid! It looks like Johnny has experienced a lot of trauma and the smiling he does when he’s talking about himself comes from trauma. This is common when there is unresolved trauma.

Plus dissociating (which is common in abuse situations) will usually make you not register certain things properly. I have problems with frequent dissociations and once accidentally cut my hand while cleaning. I really did not think that he would be one of those men though." Disappointed but brushed it off, so used to men being abusive even famous ones. You know what bothers me???? While listening to that 5 hour tape and a couple of others, I literally felt bloody after witnessing the deplorable emotional and verbal abuse which she visited upon him. We talk about abuse but when we talk about abused men, it is assumed not to be s destructive. God…..I was hopping that he wouldn’t do something to himself. As someone who also has that tendency, I'm telling you that laugh just represents discomfort. Is the laugh of someone who is a shy and very private person but very used to find himself in a situation where is feeling pushed to talk about him or his personal life in front of an audience unwillingly. An involuntary, sarcastic and sad laugh used more as a scape valve for such an unwanted conversation. I'm sure if you review some of his interviews, you'll find out more of those smiles while facing awkward questions or situations.

Look, as a man who was in an abusive relationship, I can 100% relate to Johnny Depp. I was also physically and psychologically abused by a woman. A woman who spun a rather ridiculous version of the truth to everyone I knew. She legitimately had people believing that I was the abuser. To this day, many, many people still believe her story and treat me like a tyrannical monster. You keep going on about Johnny Depp saying more than he was asked to but I appreciate Depp's willingness to give EVERY detail even if not asked. It's really a sign of honesty. Not holding back information in an attempt to protect yourself. He lays all the cards on the table and says "This is me, this is what really happened. It isn't all pretty but it's the truth." This idea that Amber Heard was somehow innocent by default simply because she is a woman is sad. It's a tough battle to fight and even though I am not a Johnny Depp fan, I wish him the best in this case.

I use comedy, jokes, sarcasm as a coping mechanism. I learned this growing up with severe physical and psychological abuse. Even my therapist has told me he sees I use it as a coping mechanism and to destract myself from the abusive reality. To lighten the mood, to even give the people I am dealing with an emotional break from the horrendous things I am telling them or dealing with. And since I have used this for so long I incorporate it into most aspects in my life. I can see the lighter, funnier side in almost everything. Therapist says that's the soothing side of my personality, not wanting to overwhelm someone or even myself.

I know I'm late to this video and I'm not an expert at body language nor do I have any experience in any traumatic events myself, but I am aware of some coping mechanisms (again, not an expert, so I could be wrong). When you talked about Johnny acting like his character, Jack Sparrow, reminds me of a type of coping mechinism where someone will begin to almost turn into a comfort character or act like their idol because that's their idea of coming off as strong or courageous. Not sure if I explained that well, but seeing Johnny act like one of his characters makes me think that he's doing that to make himself feel more confident and comfortable. And not to mention that I can relate, not due to trauma, but for a type of masking. To me, he’s describing someone finally facing the fact that the person he married quite literally wounds him in every way possible. And it shows just how little he cared about himself at that time in his life. He should be racing to get a towel & darting out the door to get to the ER. But he’s been so conditioned by Heard to keep his attention solely on her that even while severely bleeding, he makes it all about her. That’s a sad moment.

I'm from the UK and although there are differences in the way things are done here, both sides are pretty dang awful at protecting both men and women from actual DV and false accusations of DV. There's not really much in the way of 'winning' when you're the accuser or the wrongfully accused in either jurisdiction whether it's public or not. I think people do need to take a step back and understand that this trial and the way it is going is absolutely not a common occurrence, and that most other cases are far harder to judge and determine who is being honest. It's an anomaly because of Amber being so dramatic and outlandish in her accusations. Had she been more reserved and realistic, we would likely be looking at a very different outcome

I've come back to revisit the Depp/Heard trial as it has such compelling case studies in both the behavior observation arena and in the civil court legal proceedings. Emotional enough to be interesting but without the horror of a death involved. As a retired RN I've had some education in psychology and experience in observation of people. Watching your channel addressing this case, especially the videos where you host great guests to add their inputs, have taught me so much! Generally speaking I find I miss registering almost all the physical movements plainly in view that you name. Couldn't describe what my eyes saw. Just never seemed to get filtered through my analytical brain. Eyesight straight into emotional responses. Amazingly reaching the same conclusions you do after you have broken down physical reactions with descriptions. Apparently unconsciously understanding the meaning through some pre-verbal instinctive clues. Fascinating!

I'd've answered much the same way. Like he said, if you do something often enough you'll register less memory of that particular thing. So Depp not remembering if he drank but truly trying to remember would come out like that. As for having a drug tolerance for a specific common drug THAT IS relevant because even if taken accidentally it wouldn't have resulted in a behavioral threat that could be twisted in the testimony of his experience. Marijuana does not effect me so say I ate a weed brownie and drove would I be "under the influence" while operating the vehicle? It has that kind of significance. Saying "yes, I consumed THC then drove home during the times between x and y" without the context that my body produces enzymes that process it more effectively would be detrimental to my testimony of the truth.

One thing I have yet to hear of is if Johnny was guilty of abuse, there is absolutely no way she could hide marks and bruises from the rings he wears and always has worn those rings.Ambers claims are " he hit me in the face" It would break skin and bruises would be deep! Johnny's switch from the way he spoke to his attorney to the way he spoke to Rottenborn (Amber's attorney) is because Johnny went from feeling safe to express himself, to then having to be defensive knowing Amber's attorney is going in for the attack. Johnny handled himself with humor and sass, but he did NOT show aggression on the stand. AND, I noticed he actually placated Rottenborn a couple times by saying "Sure" - like he just wanted Rottenborn to move on to something else. He also placated Amber. It's a mechanism used to avoid or end a perceived confrontation. Sometimes it's easier just to agree or "go along with" the other person so they will move on or shut up - EVEN when the other person is completely wrong. Sometimes sacrificing a win to a disagreement, by placating, is paramount to actually being right. Especially when, like Johnny, your natural reaction to conformation is to avoid and/or run away. If the jury is observant and mildly intelligent they will see all this for themselves and can see Johnny was clearly avoiding a confrontation, even from Rottenborn - a man who's job it is to destroy Johnny on the stand. Johnny's use of humor, sarcasm and placating are pretty evident. It doesn't mean Johnny didn't show frustration or annoyance - but that was only shown at being constantly cut off and not being able to finish his thoughts and NOT at what Rottenborn was actually saying. BTW, Amber is vile!

I think the smile when talking about the bottle going past his head is a mix of emotions. He's feeling disbelief, embarrassment, and shock. I don't think he ever expected to one, be a victim of domestic abuse or two, have to admit it. I think when he is reliving that experience at the time he never thought about anyone outside of his immediate circle would ever know. I bet it feels kind of "silly" to have to tell people, strangers, such a dark part of his life. I imagine as a celebrity how much more important privacy is and how much more difficult it is to violate your own privacy of such and intimate and extreem event. The whole situation must feel really surreal. Its so far out of the norm. I assume very uncomfortable to be stuck in a lie, from Johnny's perspective, that she can't get put of and has to relive.

6:19 Depp forgetting about the cigarette being put out on his face just blew me away. It shows the level of abuse he was subjected to. The fact that she put it out on his face - not his arm or hand or even his neck - but the part of our bodies that is literally our identity - shows the contempt she has for him, and that she wanted it displayed for all the world to see. Not to mention, as an actor, his face is (at least part of) his fortune, so she is undercutting his livelihood as well.
