Boeing 747 Takeoff CONFIGURATION WARNING

Hello everyone- how do you do. In todays video, I show you the warnings we would get on the Boeing 747-400 and the 8 if the configuration was not correct for takeoff. Airliner development has gone through several stages in the last 50 years. Early model aircraft for example did not have the takeoff configuration warning systems fitted because they had not been developed yet. There were accidents where procedures were not strictly adhered to and Flaps were not set correctly or stabiliser was not set correctly. In some incidents, the flaps were forgotten completely!
The Boeing 747 (similar to all modern aircraft)has a configuration warning system to alert pilots of an incorrect configuration. It would mean rejecting the takeoff and recalculating the speeds etc. The first part of the video is on the B747-400 and I’ve tagged on a second part which is in the B747-8.
Hope it all makes sense- I’ve put my usual captions so you can follow the actions taking place. Hope you like it. ‘Chi Di Gin! Later!😀✈️✈️✈️✈️

I’d imagine the last config warning is if the speedbrakes aren’t down? Wow, the sound fidelity is noticeably better in the 748 simulator!

I flew business on one of the last Qantas 747-SP AKL-LAX runs, the pilot had a bit of fun on takeoff - we were stopped with the brakes on while the engines spooled up to full TO. The whole aircraft was bouncing up and down and jerking forward until brakes were released and we were OUTTA THERE! Never been pressed back into my seat like that before or since. Must have been an accidental CONFIG PARK BRK ;)

I saw the Boeing demo 747SP takeoff from Sydney before Qantas bought them. A similar thing happened and the aircraft, which was almost empty, took off in less than 1/5th of the runway.
@KingdaToro
@KingdaToro 2 жыл бұрын
This is just a static takeoff, you do it when the runway is just barely long enough. You hold the brakes on, then release them as soon as the engines reach takeoff thrust. This way, you use up less runway since you're not rolling forward as the engines spool up.

Hong Kong Int'l has both runways at 3800m long. Captain, what runway length would be necessary for a B744/8 at 850k pounds TO weight such that there is No V1(!), would only be necessary to call VR.?

quick question- does the warning go off when the n1 reaches a certain level, or when the thrust levers are at a certain level? i know on the 737 the alarm will sound when you move the thrust levers to a certain position

@pilot_obet7815 2 жыл бұрын
Thrust lever position
@ImperrfectStranger
@ImperrfectStranger 2 жыл бұрын
According to my 747-400 Engineering Training Notes, the 747-400 warning is based on the either of the inboard engines' N1 exceeding 66.7%N1 on the Rolls Royce engine and 75.0% N1 on the GE engine. The Classic 747 was based on thrust lever position.
@pilot_obet7815
@pilot_obet7815 2 жыл бұрын
@@ImperrfectStranger correct but the N1 or EPR can only achieve those values by thrust lever position….

@@ImperrfectStranger in a way it is both.
@ImperrfectStranger
@ImperrfectStranger 2 жыл бұрын
@@pilot_obet7815 True, of course :) On the Classic, you could move the levers with the engine not running and you would get a configuration warning. On the -400, even with the 747-400 EEC Test switches on, powering the EECs, thrust lever movement won't result in any config warnings. It has to be actual N1 rather than commanded thrust (N1 or EPR). And there is not always a direct correlation between commanded EPR (thrust lever position) and N1 on an RR or PW engine.

Wait, that small parking brake lever is what stops a machine of that size?
@pilot_obet7815
@pilot_obet7815 2 жыл бұрын
Not quite- it holds the Brake pedals in place which I have to depress with both feet with force, then pull that lever to hold in place. To release the brakes, I have to use both feet to press hard on top of the pedals to allow the lever to drop and indicate brakes are released
@ImperrfectStranger
@ImperrfectStranger 2 жыл бұрын
The CONFIG SPOILERS would have been the most interesting on the 747-400. In theory, you will get it if you only advance thrust lever #2 to takeoff thrust. Otherwise you would have to pull the autospeedbrake circuit breaker on the overhead panel to stop the speedbrake lever automatically stowing before the takeoff warning starts.
@pilot_obet7815
@pilot_obet7815 2 жыл бұрын
Yes because the Speedbrake lever stows with thrust lever advancement anyway😊

Nice explanation sir!! My question was, if the flap was set to a higher flap setting than what is actually required for takeoff, will it give the same T/O Configuration warning? Because, that too is also incorrect... Will wait for your reply sir! 😊

Sound interested, Then can you explain what the mistake of the Emirates airplane when they crashed on the runway, that flight from India to Dubai. Is the pilot missed the TOGA trigger? Kindly explain.
@pete9364
@pete9364 2 ай бұрын
So, let's say there is a runway that is just enaugh for a certain max weight, and all V's calulations are made for 20 flaps. If the pilot makes a mistake to select 10, then thre is no warning, right? But that means that at Vr the a/c wont lift off and after V1 the pilot can legally regect the T/O if the a/c in unfliable when in reality needed maybe around 20kt extra? Not sure how is handled in this situation because I don't fly a 747 but curious if in that case the pilot should keep pushing getting close to the end of the runway to try to take off anyway or overrun at some 160kt instead than 40kt if it was rejected. Thanks

Sir, do we always take off with TO/GA power?
@pilot_obet7815
@pilot_obet7815 2 жыл бұрын
TOGA is just the switch you activate- the actual thrust is dependent on what you require based on the weight etc on the day. Like an accelerator on a vehicle - you always press on it weather the car is heavy or with only you on board. The amount of acceleration you need is dependent on the weight of the car to get it moving.
