Lawyer and ethicist, Jonathan Marks, explores what institutions so often get wrong in a crisis. Using Boeing as a recent case study, he tells organizations to throw away what he calls "the Crisis Playbook"-a set of tactics designed to rebuild trust. He urges them instead to focus on the more difficult work of becoming truly worthy of our trust. As Marks says: "Trust is what gets us on an airplane. Trustworthiness is what keeps that plane in the air!"
Jonathan Marks is a Scotsman, who trained as a human rights lawyer in England, and now teaches at the Pennsylvania State University, where he is director of the Bioethics Program. He writes and lectures on ethics, law, and policy. His last TEDxPSU talk, “In Praise of Conflict,” was picked up by TED.com and received more than one million views in its first few weeks - not bad for a human but somewhat less impressive in the world of cat videos! That talk also became the framework for his book, “The Perils of Partnership: Industry Influence, Institutional Integrity, and Public Health,” published by Oxford University Press in 2019, and shortlisted for the Book Award of the North American Society for Social and Political Philosophy.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The main problem is executives do not go to jail for their carelessness and actions. There is no real accountability only for them to get rich on other peoples backs.

"Trust is what gets us on an airplane, while trust worthiness is what keeps us in air"... Fantastic Adv. Jonathan, to that i'd like to add a little bit.. besides keeping us in the air safely it also ensures a safe, neat & clean landing...! Copy that, Dorothy... else one may encounter a dramatic chilling experience like in the movie :Flight... That leads us to a practical difficulty, of ur seeming solution/ suggestion of keeping, staying away from un trustworthy companies /service providers...? Is it really practically feasible for, the flight-passenger, to verify, witg the crew, - - abt whether the pilot/s is sober, has had alcohol/drugs, before take off /heavy intake the night before? Or he's not seriously disturbed with pressing issues, at home or at work place... Or n most imp, if he's adequately trained & certified by recognised, responsible authorities to deliver the air passengers safe & sound everytime he's in the cockpit, Dorothy....? fully agree with u on that score, Dorothy abt air pasengers, confidence in the pilots abilities hvng taken a steep nose dive in recent yrs, esp over the past decade... hvng witnessed a record number of mishaps due to patent negligence / ill trained pilots allowed to take charge, so on & so forth.... Precisely... now that raises valid suspicion, of whether its a well plotted, planned strategy by the airline carriers, & above all the air craft mfrers like for eg. Boeing & Air bus, to allow things to come to a sorry pass, to deteriorate steeply, so as to inspire a complete & 'total lack of confidence in the service provider, / air craft mfrer, and above all, discourage all together the air traveller from availing flight transportation services... to say, newly introduced, HSR, or bullet trains... or EV - luxury - limouzine - buses...? That's a fairly common trick deployed by industry /corporates, world over & inspite of pplz seeing thru it, what options do they really hv...? Yeah, for eg if the state run railway - passenger servuce operator, chooses /decides to cancel the regular, scheduled train at the proverbial 11th hour, what could the hapless passenger do but, to go to the nearest road bus operator who's inyroduced a supposedly fancy Volvo bus service... & 'the bus operator syndicate being backed / funded by the politicians, cronies...? The 2 instances that u cited of the Indonesian - Lion Air, crash landing in the Java sra, immediately after take off, killing all pasengers & crew on board , besides the 5 months later - Ethiopia - Adis Ababa - flight crash landing at a speed of 700 mph, within 6 minutes after take off, killing all on board... doesn't that raise extremely disturbing questions, Adv Jonathan Marks, esp all the more since u also happen to be an - self proclaimed - - ethicist besides being an advovate...? Trust me, Dorothy, hv been practising diligently what i say for past 2 decades... It is extremely disturbing to anybody, for eg, a gold buyer, if the highly reputed, branded, gold jewellery store, sales guy, responds brusquely to the gold buyers queries, doubts, taking offense at the doubts raised, instead of reassuring, inspiring confidence, response... as to the purity of the gold jewellery being exactly as claimed & promised by the seller ? Again, inspite of the fact of the buy back assurance /guarantee, what's the point if the confidence, trust is dented, esp if the customer is not wanting to incur a los on return..? Sooh we come to the point as to, what exactly do u mean by... trust...? The dictionary /theasaurus would tell us the latin roots of the word being, fid... ie fid as in, confidence : fidelity : perfidy... Fido... the common name of a domestic dog... and /or a **trust being an arrangement /agreement among a group of pplz/kompanies, in the industry, to collude so as to cut down n /or eliminate the slightest threat of competition...!!! Precisely..... monopoly & restrictive trade practices...! And then there's another entomology, Dorothy.... of trust, coming from the rootcword, traust, - Viking origins... entomology? Adv Jonathan.. isn't that the study of insects...,? Perfekt.... etymology... not entomology... Sooh, the later English language has thousands of daily usage words, coming in frim Norse language, like, sister, sky, egg, blunder, rotten... sooh onn & so forth.. like the Shakespearean phrase--"there's something rotten in the state of Denmark"...? and here, it certainly appears to be "something sinister in the entite industry, the govt, the administrators, the bankers, the financiers, the law officers /administrators, medial professionals, educators et al... in short a complete break down of trust, Dorothy...!!! soooh, what do we do, Adv Jonathan?

We long ago allowed the Bully in the schoolyard to define what is meant by “Bullying”, and the Bully is also told it will be reimbursed if anyone disagrees and try’s to harm the Bully. Last but not least is the fact that laws and regulations are to be defined and documented by the Bully alone, in no way by the consumer or persons who must tolerate such a scheme.

Unfortunately, due to competition with AirBus, Boeing stopped taking care of quality and safety and only thought about preparing and selling the B-737Max. They thought more about profit than safety. Like on a scale. Sad accidents occur.

The 2 ghastly tragic air crash accidents, u talk abt, Adv. Jonathan Marks raises too many significant questions, casting serious doubts on the ethical - or absolute lack of it - - on part of the Boeing, aeroplane mfr Co... what are the topmost questions these 2 accidents, raise in ur mind, Dorothy...? The compounding of the Indonesian - Lion air - Boeing 737 Max, a new aeroplane bought by the Indonesian, Lion - Air aeroplane kompany into Java sea... by the famous US, lawyer, Tom Girardi, charged with defrauding the relatives of the killed passengers & the crew in the Java sea crash... Tom Girard, a Beverly Hills lawyer, Dorothy, now abt 83 yr old lawyer, has had an immensely succesful legal career, esp in the hi profile cases of personal injury... Was he not the one who represented the Hunkeley, California residents in the, Pacific Gas Kompany, litigation... later the case immortalised by Hollywood film, Erin Brokowich... This lawyer has been found to be a serial fraudster, duping many of his clients over the long run of his succesful legal career... Tom Girard & Kees - law firm had appted the Chicago based attorneys to represent the aggrieved Indonesians law suit against Boeing kompany. However, once the case was concluded succesfully, & compensation ordered to be paid, the Indonesians were shocked upon receiving excuses upon excuses for the inordinate delay in transferring the funds to their accounts... Why & how coukd this US law firm, carry on this duping of clients, esp in the class - act, law suits... Here the plaintiffs were Indonesians, foreigners aliens to the US legal system, language etc, but one of the excuse offered by Tom Gerard was of the funds being transferred in the clients Trust account were yet to be released, pending authorisation by Boeing kompany...! Soooh, Adv Jonathan Marks, can we infer safely of a criminal collusion between the law firm & the giant air plane mfr kompany....? We'd need to study each & every compensation claims case filed against giant kompanies like Boeing, ascertain the detailed facts of the cases to arrive at an well informed conclusion, yet the mischievous possibility of a rank criminal collusion between the law firm & the Boeing internal legal team, among other higher up Sr members, cannot be ruled out... Clients Trust account... sooh that leads us to the other utmost significant fall out of the air olane disaster crash... Trusts... & its history.. its origins... You'll need to do a special talk show, Adv Jonathan Marks, exclusively on the.. Trust angle... moreso, in view of the, cacophinic brouhaha in the Gr. Britain & Northern Ireland over the so called Brexit - disaster, going onn non stop for over 5 yrs now, clearly masking, far too many systemic disastrous catastrophic breakdowns in the UK's administration & governance... All the more in view of global giant predatory bankers, among other Kompanies, being at helm in 10 Downing st, besides the global media kompany - caucus, cabal, clique - proxy - PM, the Trust angle figuring, looming large... esp the present PM & his wife's personal entirely questionable conduct in the matter of, blind-trusts... tax evasion... for inst, in a banana republic, we all know, who it is, the accused PM & his foreign origin wife were literally hounded by a eminent jurist firing a daily barrage of 10 Qns in the tinpot broadsheet media.... and here in Gr Britain, England & Wales., a country which continues undoubtedly to hv a significantly decisive sway over global affairs, esp of the banana republic, former overt colonies, what do we see...? Hv we seen the holding to account of the past 3-4 PM's, esp the foreign origin PMs & their multi billionnaire wifeys, lording over us... the British citizens...? Instead we are subjected to a daily barrage of diversionary missiles of, customs, duties, highn low taxes, hard & soft borders which are a universal grave concerns, instead of holding the powerful authorities to account...!!! What are the other significant issues u were mentioning Dorothy, abt these 2 air crashes i talked abt..? There hv been many air crashes, terror hijacking of air planes, HSR /bullet trains in the 70z-80z, in the 90z, & over the last decade, planes hit by missiles? / vanishing altogether... True... like the Malaysian air crash case a few yrs ago... Niw this Indonesian Lion air plane crashing into the Java sea, raises 2 pertinent Qns, Adv Jonathan Mark.. No 1 is abt, the presence of the then Indonesian president, Mr Sukarno - - as a chief guest of honour, at the republic day parade of India, on 26th Jan 1950, the day it decalred itself a sovereign independent republic, whatever it may mean...! and the republic day parade, ceremony was held at tge old Delhi fort, Purana Qilla, where a Zoo came up immediately in following years...!!! I get the drift.. Dorothy... & the 2nd point...? The crash landing of the plane in the Java sea...? What if any is the connekt to the Java language...? Java language was an immensely popular computer language, invented by 2 engineers at Sun micro systems in the beginning of the 90z decade... before their focus turned ti the world wide web... And now as we all know, the AI system, robots, languages has taken the entirecworld by storm over the past 2 years... sooh in that respect ur doubts are not atcall unfounded, Dorothy, of a sinister connekt, warranting a full fledged no holds barred discussion on glibal platforms... among other disastrous air plane hijacks & crashes 2 cases stand out, Adv Jonathan Marks... the Air Indian plane - Kanishka - hijack from Canada & its crash into Atlantic ocean nr Ireland, a case yet unresolved... besides the 27 March 1977...KLM, air crash, killing over 550 passengers & crew... which in turn leads us to an altogether diff trajectory....
