Goosebumps in every second of this video! I love Freddy, and when I saw the Marc Martel's videos I was shocked with his voice. As you said, if we close our eyes we can not tell the difference. Amazing!
@odonovan8 ай бұрын
6:02 - If you listen to some of Marc's OLD songs with his Christian rock band (called "downhere"), you'll notice Marc isn't doing anything with his voice to sound like Freddie. Even in this video, he's not trying to sing "in the style of" Freddie, but is doing his own version. As he's mentioned in interviews, all he does is add "a bit" of a British accent, when singing Queen songs, to sound more like Freddie's accent. Roger Taylor called Marc's voice "spine-chillingly identical" to Freddie's, and I'm certainly not going to be the one to argue with him. 😄

There is a video compilation of Marc sounding like other singers. Also, some of his non Queen, 90 music covers really show off his talent for voice impressionism. Then he has his own music that is absolutely amazing. I love his Impersonator album, more specifically, the song The Remake. There is one note that he holds for an incredibly long time.

IMO on that particular video, it demonstrates how Marc's voice sounds the same in every cover - jokingly "it's Freddie singing Seal!" - rather than how much his voice "changes". I think Marc has a great ear for matching "style" and enunciation, but his tone stays the same.

Freddie Mercury was an extraordinary musician and showman. Marc is right up there with him regarding musicianship. Both had/have a level of versatility that make for a truly great listening experience. I love the way that both singers would bend notes at the rght time and use the right amount of vibrato. While my singing is comparable to a cow lowing in a field, I do have a good ear for music. I exclusively play the soprano saxophone. I was thinking that much of what you were talking about in this video also pertains to the type of sound I get when practicing my soprano sax. I spoke of vibrato above. It took me a long time to perfect my vibrato on the sax. It also took a long time to get my growling to sound half-way decent.

When you were struggling to find a term for what Marc does other than “impression”, I think “vocal tribute” more accurately describes what he does. He’s not pretending his voice is Freddie’s, he’s paying tribute to Freddie’s musicality.

Marc, along with Tommy Johansson (also worth checking out) are my two favourite singers, for reasons you mention - nice clear voices. For the women, it's Lara Fabian and Faouzia. Faouzia is up and coming and should be a lot more known than she is. She recently released a live performance of her Fur Elise, which is amazing. She's unique in many ways. At just 23, she writes most of her own songs, but does some great covers as well.

Queen has prog. (Prophet's Song), thrash metal (Stone Cold Crazy), punk rock-style (Sheer Heart Attack) & many more genres mixed in their catalogue. They were very rock inspired in the 70s, while they leaned towards pop in the 80s. They are literally the British Band with the most diverse sound. Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, King Crimson, Yes, Radiohead etc., do not even come close in that respect. (They were all great British Bands, in their respective field). That is why Queen are still loved & remembered by many people until today.
