Jingles, WG can make a simple detection system with i,e, criteria: low number of owned tanks, free tanks used, friendly fire, low avg dmg, with those criteria met - turning blue in battle should results in 2week ban - could work quite nicely

Yeah, you don't have to formally perma-ban them, you just have to create a list of criteria that identifies probably trolls then lower the thresholds for two week bans significantly. And then more criteria for people at that lower threshold that makes it a hair trigger so that players who fit the obvious troll profile (meaning the chances they are a new player accidentally barging a friendly into the river or overturning them are very low, the chances they are a troll doing it for fun are much higher) get autobanned for two weeks. There should be criteria for identifying troll clans - clans where the majority of members fit the criteria detailed above as potential trolls, so that membership of a troll clan designates you as a probable troll automatically. But then, if two or three players that fit the troll profile platoon together in the same battle, as soon as one of them does team damage or gets reported by 3 players from their team for the same thing, ban all the troll profile players in the same platoon for two weeks.

But if you have people you already know are almost certainly trolls platooned up, there's something satisfying & also obvious to everybody in game about seeing all 3 of them suddenly turn blue & stop moving because they are banned for two weeks when the third 'inappropriate behaviour in chat' complaint hits one of them during the same battle.

Random software developer here. WG needs to look at fraud detection software mechanisms. IP numbers. Client id's. Extreme standard deviation. There's a lot of possibility if WG was only willing enough to do something about it. Reporting people only gets you so far. WG needs an abuse/fraud department completely devoted to an alert/check/analyse/report workflow to actively identify people abusing the game. The data is there. It's a matter of willingness to invest money into such a system and process. And increasing costs might not be what WG had in mind....

1) WG is not willing. an F2P game cannot afford to ban anyone, let alone implement advanced and costly solutions. 2) At the more fundamental level, net anonymity has to go, as it really is the fundamental enabler of all problematic online behavior. We all need a unique online identity to permit use of the internet, to enable companies to ensure that people they once have decided they don't to deal with, remain gone from their service.

@@UltraSuperDuperFreak It's not about tracking, it's about recorded data which you agree having collected under Terms and Conditions if you want to play the game to start with. Without entering in extensive technicalities it's possible to generate certain triggers for certain type of events, basically a matrix in which a trigger or combination of triggers conducts for action X or Y to be taken, all of which can be either automated or manually checked.

The Chieftain from memory covered this question awhile ago. I seem to remember the answer given was to the effect of you might get a target that's too tough for the machine guns and not armoured enough for the 105/main gun. So you put in the 20mm to have this intermediate, tough enough, strong enough weapon, for say, a truck, light armoured vehicle. The problem was for the 20mm ammunition etc etc, it took away space from the main gun and the main gun ammunition more specifically. So not only were you carrying less ammunition in the first place, you were carrying more types of ammunition as well. And if it was worth firing the 20mm, it was worth a 105, the like, going down range. One of his Q&A sessions, four or five I want to say.

About the Polsten cannon. The original Oerlikon had 250 parts the Polsten had 119 parts, and there was no visible change in accuracy or reliability between the two designs. The difference in price was also significant as Oerlikon cost was approx 350 pounds (approx 19722.04 pounds in 2020) when the cost of one Polsten cannon was around 60-70 pounds (approx 3380.92 pounds in 2020). So You could have approx 5 Polsten for a price of one Oerlikon. This was huge deal for war stricken England and other Allied countries when every material has to be rationed

Hi Jingles, on the matter of mass produced aircraft with auto cannons. The Frencg had them too. Hispano Suiza 404 in 20mm. Installed in the MS.406 and I think the D.500/510 too. Later it was used by some little known air force of a foggy and rainy island. ... Hmm, Ireland? Not sure. ;)

hi centurion prototypes 1 - 5 had the polsten cannon AND a rear facing besa 7.9mm the cannon to engage lightly armoured targets deemed not worthy of main armament ammo, and the besa to handle infantry. prototypes 6-10 had the besa removed and a circular hatch installed to facilitate removal of the 17 pdr barrel. on prototypes 11-16 the polsten was ditched in favour of a besa, hope this helps.

As a guess, a 20mm autocannon is great for two things when used in the ground attack role. First, it's even better than a 12.7mm (.50 cal) machinegun at turning trucks, armored cars and armored personnel carriers into scrap metal. Second, it's even better than a 12.7mm machinegun at making infantry regret every life choice they'd ever made that led up to them being downrange of that gun. Unlike 12.7mm, 20mm shells are big enough to contain a moderate explosive charge.

The 20mm co-ax was intended for soft skinned targets, trucks and thin armour vehicles... Tankers(isreali army fighting regularly in this time frame) then revealed that they use the main gun on those targets anyway so the 20mm was pointless and then it was deleted in favour of the co-ax MG.

Actuarially Jingles, the Polsten was to deal with the hoards of Soviet Marines in powered armor that would precede the hoards of Soviet tanks as they drove straight to the Bay of Biscay. And these kind of folks often all log in from Student or Internet cafe locations, and their real accounts can often be found by back checking. Jingles. They could implement hardware id bans that will prevent them from being able to use new accounts with that system. Yes these can be spoofed along with their IP address, but they add layers of work that a person would need to do just to play the game.

The idea behind the Polsten (Poland and Sten) cannon was not unique. An HE capable secondary that would provide more killing power against infantry and be able to deal with light vehicles so the main gun ammo can be saved for more critical targets. AMX-30 also had a 20mm for this, and the mighty Maus had a 75mm cooax. But as you pointed out, a .30 cal is plenty capable against infantry, and the savings in main gun ammo proved insufficient to justify the added space and weight. Which is why you dont see it often these days

Non Non Non You are incorrect Jingles, The French also had Plenty of planes using 20mm Auto-Canons, planes like the D.520, the Ms410 and Ms406, aswell as the Potez-630 all Featured offensive 20mm canons, Many of the Frontline bombers and Heavy Bomvers used by France also featured 20mm defensive turrets, France even made Parasol Fighters with 20mm Canons when germany was only fielding Biplanes with 7.92mm Machine guns

One game I've played for YEARS (Subspace/continuum) had a method of banning that didn't target the username, it targeted the IP address - so, ANY account trying to log in from that computer over that internet connection was incapable of entering whichever arena the player had been banned from. Not sure what it would take with current technology to do the same thing, but a permanent IP ban would work, and they'd basically have to get a new computer and completely reconfigure their modem IP in order to log into the game again. Permanent IP address ban!!!

It would be easy to ban them. We did this in the original Counterstrike. We filtered their account by their CPUID. It is in the network transmission header and cannot be masked like a MAC Address. They can go and buy a new CPU but then that forces them to spend money. I say let them pay for the priviledge of being asswipes. Just takes someone at Wargaming to write the code.

10:00 Uh, Jingles, most air forces in WW2 had auto-cannon armed aircraft. 20mm cannons are still cannons. And, frankly, I don't see how mounting large cannons on ground attack aircraft made Germany ahead of its time--the only ground attack aircraft that really took a similar approach ever since was the A-10, and that's more of a "ground attack aircraft with a 30mm gatling gun".

Most computer hardware (processor, harddrives, GPU, etc) has a unique ID code. These codes are normally stored on your computer and accessed for things like remote customer service, optional hardware surveys that are done, and can be helpful in criminal investigations. Many game companies use these ID codes to hardware-ban people that are significantly disruptive to their games and thus their business. Some online-requiring DRM also utilize these hardware IDs in their operation. While it is possible to go in and alter these IDs, it s harder than spoofing an IP address and tends to throw OSs into a bit a tizzy. Since this is already something done by other companies, most likely Wargaming simply does not see this sort of behavior as negative enough to their bottom line to justify implementing such a system.

I would think it fairly simple to find out who the invite code came from. If two or more perma-banned accounts were invited by the same account then then you ban the sender's account as well. Protects against one jagoff friend being a dick and also should be fairly easy to implement as they already track where invites come from account wise. They don't even need to add more infrastructure or gather new data, would cost them only whatever they pay to make a terms of service change.

It really is simple to do. Install a IP identifying software that logs the "reported" accounts, then compares them to known "good" accounts. Once you have a match, you ban ALL accounts under that IP. Yes sure a innocent might get caught up here and there, but no big deal that can be fixed on a case to case basis. You then institute a ban by MAC address system, that will reject packets at the router level from any known banned computer/laptop/NIC. Not hard to do at all, and would effectively ban the abuser to the point they would have to purchase new NIC to try and troll again. (Above explanation is highly oversimplified for the non network engineers reading)

The problem of throwaway accounts to harrass other players was already around 10 years ago in EvE online, there is not much you can do about it except log and compare the IP's but with VPN tools this can be easily avoided. On the 20mm gun, as far as I remember these were designed to deal with lightly armored APC's , recon vehicles and similar, those kind of tagets you cant crack with an MG but were the main gun is more likely to just overpenetrate and do not much more than punching two holes in. The AMX 30 also had such an arragement, this became obsolete with the invention of HESH rounds

Solution thought: I mean let's be real. How many people that play the game the way it is supposed to have a winrate less than, let's say 15%. WG could take into account a number of battles like 1 thousand for example and target those with a winrate like above

IP ban? IP and VPN ban? Ban based on, and I forget what to call it, there's an "individual computer fingerprint" way to uniquely identify most computers by a detailed check of components and settings. I'd look at doing all three if i had to.

Possible solution: if you have less than, say, 44% winrate, which is basically bot level, you only get to play with bots or other "players" with 51% wr in the last 500 battles against bots, then you can play with real players for a while, as long as you can keep your wr above bot level. It would prevent these troll/bot accounts from ruining everyone's fun, the issue is that many of these accounts are full of premium tanks, and WG doesn't want them to stop spending money on wot, which they probably would if this solution was implemented

The Soviets where even producing their own (LaGG-3 & Yak-1, both with 1x20mm cannons), Japan had the Zero (2x20mms). Though those only entered service before their countries entered the war not before the war started. The French however where flying the D.500 and M.S.406 before the invasion of Poland and both of those where armed with 1x20mm cannons.

At first after watching the KV-2 battle at the beginning, I thought I might have run across one of the troll players in World of Tanks Blitz. His name was one of those “RenamedUser_” ones with all the numbers after it, and I was also in a KV-2 on Himmelsdorf. I killed 5 tanks out of 7 on the enemy team, but at the end, that renamed user guy started telling everyone on both teams to report me because I “was a bot.” It was only after I watched the replay that I realized that the renamed user was probably mad at me because every tank he was about to shoot at, I killed. Oops.

Suggestion: only allow platoons after a certain number of games, or after reaching a certain WR/WN8 ? Without a 3 player platoon, behaviour like this is much less 'fun'.

Here's two things WG can do: When a game goes like this: I) 1) end the game without counting statistics II) 1) the game pauses; 2) The opposite team is given the opportunity for first come first served switching teams; 3) end the current game, with out counting any statistics; 4) Restart game with original players minus the blue guy and anyone in a group with him.

Well... you need to install game first, before you log in to your account to play. WG can identify game installations and once disruptive behaviour is detected, the offending account is banned, but the game installation is marked as suspicious. Then new account is created, but if it logs in on a game client marked as suspicious, then first trolling match would result in a ban. Sure somebody can reinstall game client, but depending on the exact algorithm used to "identify" game installation, this might not be enough.

I only see two options for professional assholes. 1. Ban their IP addresses to counter potential future accounts. 2. Shadow ban them. #1 can likely still be circumvented, but the risk of banning their "real" accounts might put the fear of God in some of them. #2 could be harder to implement, but could be more effective with more options. For starters, force the players into extra long queues. Like, 5-10 minutes before getting a game. And when that game fires up...load the match with bots. Bonus points if the bots have real-looking names. If there are enough in queue, you could also just throw all the griefers and cheaters into their own games with everyone trying to out-asshole each other.

OH, and Mannerheim, the general with a German sounding name that served in the Imperial Russian Army prior to the civil war. I wonder if they don't officially call the map Mannerheim so it doesn't piss off Russian players. I'm sure the Winter War is a touchy subject.
