Jingles posting a video of the Battle of Latakia when the Israelis have reportedly (once again) taken out the Syrian Navy at Latakia (again) is ... ironic? I'm not sure what the right word is, but it's certainly something. I suppose they did use airstrikes this time though.

The war of 73 is such a fascinating conflict in the sense it was one of the few times in the Cold War were there were a classic naval battle but in the missile age. Also the story of how the Israelis got there first set of missile boats from Cherbourg France or as the episode was known “Boats of Cherbourg” is truly fascinating to read about. Also if anyone is looking for a good book on the Israeli‘s acquisition of missile boats and the naval war of 73 then I recommend “The Boats of Cherbourg: The Navy That Stole Its Own Boats and Revolutionized Naval Warfare” by Abraham Rabinovich.

To be fair, just looking at larger Soviet surface warfare vessles makes it bare that any hit they receieve will most likely set off something wrong. Being chock-full of all sorts of huge ordnance probably means getting hit equals to being out for good pretty quick. There's something to catch fire and go boom on almost ever square meter of those ships.

Aye, I'd heard Soviet era maintenance and readiness wasn't up to NATO standards but Soviet era readiness is nigh god tier compared to contemporary levels. I'd read a report on 'Moskva' before her sinking that virtually implied she'd have sunk if someone slammed a hatch too hard. Missing or empty fire extinguishers, most of her electronic systems worked either intermittently or didn't work at all. Engines overdue maintenance and overhaul limited her top speed etc etc. All this on the, supposed, 'flag ship' of the Black Sea fleet!
@rohesilmnelohe
@rohesilmnelohe Ай бұрын
@@kdog3908 Soviet maintenance was shit. If something broke, usually they threw the entire thing to storage and deployed a new one. Too hard to replace tools, like ships, were always kept pretty, but barely functional. The russian nepotism and kleptocracy has stayed in play since the beginning. Only way you can imagine that they had good maintenance is if you have no experience with them. Sadly...russians never changed.
@onenote6619
@onenote6619 Ай бұрын
Traditionally, Russia seems to be willing to spend big money on ships but utterly unwilling to spend money on maintenance. A lot of their inventory went to the bottom or the scrapyard because of that.

The Styx A/B would be the ones they had at the time of this engagement so radar homing and IR homing were both available at the time. The Styx C was the later variant which had an active seeker only but it made a very scary sound when you listened to it on your ESM equipment. the SLQ-32 and the WRLR both have the ability to let you hear the signal coming in and only the C variant had a raster scan instead of a bi-directional sweep of its radar. Never saw an OSA boat when I was in because Cuba was the only country still using them and theirs were broke down more often than in service.

The Saar 4 has a 76mm Compact....this was used to shoot down at least 1 inbound Styx Missile possibly more during the Third Battle of Latakia in 1973. The 76mm Compact was not designed for this role buts till managed to do so...Oto Melara designed the next version of this weapon (76mm Super Rapido) to engage anti-ship missiles very effectively and they tested it against 4 missiles approaching the weapon from 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock vectors - all missiles destroyed before they reached 1000m from the gun

There’s always been very close technology developments between the US and Israel, with both creating and advancing a lot of tech we use today. Israel is a powerhouse in technology and military advancements. They hold the most patents, degree holders, and inventions per capita of any nation on the planet. During either Six Day or Yom Kippur we sent then some generation sabot ammunition to field test. They’re feedback resulted in a phosphorescent effect being integrated into the ammunition is that tankers weren’t wasting ammunition by repeatedly shooting enemy armor to make sure they were destroyed because they had no visual indicator of a first hit kill.

I wonder if Jingles is aware of the hi-jinks involved in Israel actually acquiring their Sa'ar boats from their contracted manufacturer. It was an exercise of Intrigue, Danger and Adventure on the High Seas (mostly Med tbf). But it was not as some claimed Piracy, for The Jingliest tells us that "If buying isn't owning then piracy isn't theft". All of this is made even better by the fact that it massively embarrassed The French.

I also used to play a very similar naval combat game, on 5.25 disks (iIm even older!), can't remember what it was called.
