For customers who want to use Boiled Linseed oil this is a safe natural and cost effective way to maintain decks. Seal and protect your weathered redwood deck using a mixture of Boiled Linseed Oil and Mineral Spirits. Add a touch of Cold Pressed Orange Oil to kill termites and mold. Try mixing 1:1 first and see how it penetrates. If too thick add a little more mineral spirits until you get good penetration.
Linseed does mold (over time mold will form on all decks) no matter what is used. Tung oil is another, more expensive option. Will hold up a little better. Something to consider...
A Water Based Acrylic transparent deck sealer is affordable and will give one of the longest lasting results, 4 -6 yrs. Good for older decks since the acrylic penetrates and plasticizes around nails and screws holding deck boards tighter. Essentially tightening up the deck. Does not look quite as natural as some sealers, but wood grain is still visible, repels water very well.

Mix 50 50 and try a test spot first and let dry. The more linseed oil you can get in there the longer it will last (50 50 is more common). In this video we mixed 2 to 1 to really penetrate down to the underlayment from the top.

You could use Tung Oil instead, right? What about mineral oil as a thinner? They say that Boiled Linseed oil will mold and turn black. How about wax?

for outdoors i could recommend zinc oxide power, it is totally safe, just 20% to your mix, zinc oxide is the best UV protector also kills bacteria so mildew wont be a problem......

How much zinc oxide to a gallon of the oil/spirits mix should I use? Going to try this today if I can find the zinc oxide. Do they normally carry that in paint stores? Thank you very much.

Great video. Thanks. Maybe I missed it in the video, but did you mention how long that application should last. I bought some commercial deck coat for my deck a year ago and it already needs to be redone again. I don't want to have to redo my deck every year. At least I was hoping not to have to as I have 4 decks. Upstairs and downstairs on 2 sides of my house. It was a lot of work the first time to replace the decks and then we treated each board one by one on all sides before laying it down. Now 3 of them look horrible. Only one is nice and that is the one on the second floor that is covered and protected the most. The ones on the North side of the home have no roof over them and they don't even looked like they were treated at all.

Try mixing one-to-one, half boiled linseed oil & mineral spirits. If there is good absorption that will last 3 to 5 years. The more boiled linseed oil you can get in there the better. For new wood I find the boiled linseed oil needs to be thinned out quite a bit with mineral spirits to penetrate. But for older dryer wood less mineral spirits is needed - you'll still get good penetration on older porous wood with a 'thicker' mix.

Kent Schneeveis. What is the difference between raw and boiled. I have just finished a new deck and have been applying three coats of 50 50 raw linseed oil and mineral terpintine. I want to apply the final coat with straight boiled linseed oil.
@KentSchneeveis
@KentSchneeveis 6 жыл бұрын
I've only used boiled linseed, not sure what the difference is. 50 50 is a safe way to go for weathered wood, meaning it will penetrate and dry. Using straight linseed oil may not dry, may sit on the surface and be gummy and sticky mess.

Boiled linseed oil (not actually boiled) has added drying agents to help it dry in a couple of days or so depending on weather. Raw linseed oil takes forever to dry.

you dont need a hole to pour it. Those cans are made to be poured with the opening on the top (horizontally is easier). The can is made specially that it creates an air reservoir and the pouring is smooth.

@guitarfixx4652
@guitarfixx4652 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the wood turns dark over time. Boiled linseed oil is not my first choice (it's what that customer likes to use). A water based water clean-up acrylic like Cabot, Defy, Behr... holds up better, longer, comes indifferent colors, looks better over time. Protects wood better... go for one of those. See my video on Defy here... kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXaUgZxqrMdqfbs

Just bought an old house with 80-year old dark-stained wood siding. Not sure what is best to apply to it, but been thinking of going this route. But I read some places that linseed oil used externally can mold. Is there any merit to that?
