I always love the ending of when Bojack is telling his mum that they’re at the lake house. The resignation in her face as she’s trying to think about how ice cream tastes, because she’s never tasted ice cream.

She did taste ice cream, just never at the lake house. And the look of resignation is actually indicative of something more beautiful. The illusion shattered, but she kept going along with it so Bojack would feel better. She gave him a moment of kindness like he was doing for her. And it was the last moment we saw them together.

@@stalkinurmom10 bojack quite literally nearly sleeper with a minor, got a minor nearly killed from alcohol poisoning. Choked a woman out, took drugs multiple times, even went to prison. Todd is in this case way better than bojack. Yes he was a leech but it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have been said by him, it was actually extremely good writing to make him say the line because he was the person that seemed to depend on bojack and then he let go of bojack and let bojack know it was bojacks fault for everything. If you think he is a useless character you completely misunderstood his character entirely.

I think one of the saddest / hardest things about the show is the ending. Final episode. Princess Carolyn is finally married and has a kid. Todd is moving on with his life, and so is Diane. Every character is continuing on with their life, and Bojack, he’s stuck with the knowledge of everything that’s happened in the past. Sarah Lynn, his mom, and all the others are dead. The worst part is that he has to find a way to keep going with everything and everyone moving on.

That's point of it. The finale was the most realistic thing i've ever seen. No matter what happens, life goes on. People in your life always move on, just because we are stuck at some point doesn't mean world stops to turn and everything is in frozen-state until we come back. It can't always be good ending or a bad ending that it's all chaos. Instead of "and they lived happily ever after" it should be "and they lived". That's the Bojack Horseman finale. It's sad because it's real. To be honest this is the best ending we ever have in TV history.

No, it was to show how his mother couldn’t take responsibility for her role in damaging Bojack. She didn’t apologize for her abuse or for bringing him into this world, she just felt sorry that he was “born broken,” excusing herself from her role in raising him to be that way.

I love how Secretariat’s response to Bojack’s question initially sounds good by saying “You might stumble in your journey but don’t quit and keep going. You only fail if you give up”. But when you *really* listen, he’s actually saying *”Run away from your problems, don’t ever look back at them & try to understand what went wrong, and anyone who challenges your poor behaviour is just out to get you”* and giving Bojack the worst possible advice which they both unfortunately took to hear.

I read in the comments that when Bojack asks his mom if she can “taste the icecream” she has this, moment of sadness and disappointment BECAUSE she knows that she has never tasted icecream before. And I watched the scene again, and it was like a completely different moment. Her eyes dart around the room, not out of uncertainty, but out of absolute clarity. Beatrice knows she’s never tasted icecream and realizes she’s not in Michigan. In that moment, the beauty of the place that Bojack so tenderly described seeps away, she changes her manner and her eyes don’t look so lost and confused. Initially she pauses when she thinks about it; the flavor of icecream, and she sighs, and the feigned comfort and warmth is just drained out of her. But she says, it’s delicious, maybe for Bojack, in a moment of reciprocal kindness, or maybe because she wished that she knew what vanilla icecream tasted like. Something so simple, a cheap accessible novelty she could have had this whole time if she wanted to. But she never did. Truly a tribute to how she never found peace or happiness. Her face at the end, is this, false smile. Forced upon her, her tone of voice returns to its former glory of mechanical and detached. “It’s …. delicious” she assumes. Humoring her son in a moment of harrowing tragedy. These artists, the team that made this series… You can’t tell this story without knowing. You can’t write this without feeling Bojacks hurt. You can’t animate the nuances of a scene like this without having experienced hate and pain and disappointment toward a loved one. Lots of people carry these burdens. Lots of people find self awareness and community in Bojacks suffering. In the most absurd abstract way, this production team has touched my heart in a way I never thought an alcoholic horse would. Thank you for making this video. I’d forgotten how much this series moved me since my last watching.

I think another layer to this scene is the fact that.. in her eyes, Bojack was a disgrace son, too, that she could never forgive because he ruined her life and gave her nothing in return. And in that moment, it doesn't get better for her. She basically was just getting ready to die, and in that probably last coherent moment she had with him, she too couldn't be fulfilled by her son. Just as much as Bojack could never have a lovely relationship with her, she could also never have one with him.. cemented.

There was nothing he could've done for saralynn, child actors are almost all beyond saving. Now, if he did have a child, he might've been better off. What many people regret who don't have children, is there's no kids or grandkids, so they get older and more alone.

@@lagon7830 I couldn't disagree more... child actors are absolutely not beyond saving, there are plenty that have been happy in the industry, or have successfully made it out of the industry and began working a "normal" job. it depends on the work environment, unfortunately most work environments in the entertainment industry are bad as for Sarah Lynn, if he weren't so selfish, I think he absolutely had the power to make things better for her because he was a father figure to her. when she was tiny he told her that her audience will be her only true friends in life, he set an example for drug/alcohol addiction helping her view it as acceptable, he ignored her cries for help repeatedly; when she told him he needed a friend because all of her friends are using her, he proceeded to reveal he only visited her to use her for his own unsuccessful show. if he set a better example, she honestly probably could have become an architect considering her extensive knowledge of architecture that she taught herself & she could have absolutely afforded to go to college and step out of the limelight in her 30s; on their bender she insinuated she wanted to, but she was again ignored by Bojack. unfortunately Bojack waited 20 minutes to call an ambulance after she went unconscious, letting her down again. he didn't deliberately intend to hurt her, but IMO Bojack played just as much of a role in ruining her life as her mother & step father did

The recurring theme here should be that Bojack being aware of how much of an asshole he is does not make him a better person. People think that just because they're aware of their depression, just because they know they do shitty things, makes it almost ok because they know they need to be better. But they don't actually get better, they just repeat the cycle of do shitty thing, feel bad about yourself, give an empty apology to the people you hurt and do it all over again. You want to be happy, to find love in friends and family? Act like a better person. Shit, some people just fake happiness until they actually start to believe they're happy. It works. But you have to try.
@rontheron4807
@rontheron4807 3 жыл бұрын
Completely agree with the comment but if I may add; faking happiness can be a slippery slope, anxiety, EDs and depression as well as many other disorders begin with a series of traumatic situations that the brain links to what it assumes to be the cause of all of them, and tries to avoid by never repeating that supposed cause; "lost many people? I was not good enough and now I should never get my hopes up in a relationship so I can't be hurt, it'll always go wrong if I do! That makes sense!" Healing begins with deconstructing each of these memories and learning that it wasn't as simple as one thing or person being entirely at fault until your brain understands just because things can go wrong doesn't mean they will and you should be alive. Faking happiness without doing that work on the side will lead to repressing this pain and the whiplash you'll get when something triggers all the emotions you pushed away to come hit you all at once will be much harder to handle than facing your fears little by little

By series end, everyone Bojack ever cared about had moved on, either through cutting him off or through death. Bojack thought Sarah Lynn was the only one who understood him, and she ended up paying with her life for it. The only person who wanted to keep through thick and thin was Mr. Peanutbutter, someone Bojack was never once interested in being close with. Bojack lost every connection he ever wanted to make.

I like the ending because of that. It shows that his friends, despite all the horrible things they’ve been through, still led happy lives, despite their trauma and issues. And that they were able to move on from Bojack. Many shows would just have them forgive Bojack, when really he was pretty bad to them throughout their lives. The message that “you can and should move on from someone who’s hurting you, even if they have their own issues” is definitely something that helped me both cut off toxic people and understand why I’d been cut off before when I was a bad person.

why does it hurt that everyone has a different depiction of you? Even with movies, books and artwork everyone has different reactions to the same thing. Thats just the nature of everyone having their own unique perspective and context with that book or movie. Everyone isn't going to see the same thing the same way. Its the same with people. I'm wiling to bet you don't interact with every person the same as you would with your parents or your friends, or an authority figure. Even though you are the same person all those people interact with. We all play different roles in each other's lives. We don't all have the same context in our relationships as we do with our parents. so we don't treat or see everyone we know like our parent. The context in which we interact with them is different from that of a parent. which is why everyone doesn't see you the same way. the context in which you interact with others arent all exactly the same. from either ends. So for me it makes total sense that probably no two people I know have the same view of me and I dont have the same views of two people I know. were all different things to eachother and we all have different histories with eavhohter, we don't all react to the same to the same situations. We don't all think the same. We all dont prioritize the same things. these things shape our view of eachother.

everyone is saying bojack is the most real depiction of depression, like, no. no it isnt. it's the most real depiction of someone with a personality disorder who never got help, refuses to get help and constantly excuses themselves from the harm they cause others because he feews bad. he just happens to also have depression because mental illnesses most commonly come in packs of "Find one get five free.". saying he's depressed and leaving it as that, is downplaying his actions and the harm they have on other people, it downplays what people in real life like him do. people with "just" depression dont take their anger out on others in abusive ways and sabatoge their friends happiness and future because they're emotionally constipated and dont know how to handle a rejection they made up in their own heads because of a complex they developed as a child. Bojack isnt a saviour representation, he's not a depiction to make you feel less alone in your depression, and make you feel seen while ignoring every other symptom that points to something else, he's a warning. He's what you and i will become if we dont keep ourselves checked. the people he hurts are stand ins for the people we know and deserve better than what he and possibly we the audience has given them depending on who we LET ourselves be. not what others has done to us as kids, not because of what our brains do during depression. if you feel like shit, you cant get out of bed, you cant enjoy things you know you would have, that's fine and valid but dont mistake that as an excuse to act like him, because that;'s what he did and look where it got him and who that hurt and who that killed. it's a matter of choice. That's *not* what depression is. edit: good job on the video by the way OP~! this rant was more a rant/vent about comments and not directed at you at all, thanks for posting.

I agree, but we all know that’s not what the show wanted to do and I don’t think a lot of people want to say this can be relatable for everyone with depression. But it’s the most accurate depiction in the way that, like you said, sometimes unchecked/untreated depression worsens and you can possibly get additional illnesses with it and hurt people around you. I don’t think anyone intends truly to put a stamp on this as the #1 spoke story for depression, but more broadly for mental illness as a whole I would say. And who’s to say anyone’s talking strictly about Bojack? The story may be about him but it’s not centered on only him. Diane is a good example of depression, Todd is a good example of the struggles in asexuality, and complex family dynamics, Princess Carolyn is an example of enabling behaviorisms and savior complexes. All the characters are relatable and show different and important examples of mental illnesses. So it’d be very vague and unfair to pretend like none of that contributes to the show. Because I for one DIDNT just watch the show for Bojack.

I think dianne was a good depiction of depression, or at least recovering from it. I related a lot to her in the arc where she wanted to write her book but struggled with finding joy or inspiration in anything she was writing, sorta just forcing herslf through the motions but not feeling anything from it. At least for me as ive worked on overcoming depression ive sort of become a shell of who i used to be. All of the hobbies and passions that were ripped from my hands by depression and turned into blurry foggy silhouettes that i dont even recognize, have now become strangers to me as i struggle to remember /discover what makes me happy, and its still something i struggle with. Im happy with how they used her to portray that side of depression but bojacks arc definitely wasnt singlehandedly depression. I have borderline personality disorder, and 99% of the problems/struggles/actions he caused were things i related to, all of his internal struggles and inability to stop himself from ruining relationships to the point where hes normalized seeing himself as a ticking bomb thatll explode on anyone who tries to get close, is very relatable to me. So i think he was a good portrayal of borderline , but as mentioned mental illnesses come in groups

I’m also happy to hear that you’ve been diagnosed/are aware of your bpd and I hope you have access to help and support and that you’re letting yourself get the help and understand you deserve to get better, to find your joy and inspiration. I also relate to the ticking bomb quote that he has said, and I’m sorry you have to go through this, it’s not easy. Keep working at it, if you can’t do it for yourself then do it for them. It shows that sometimes, shitty people never get better, no matter how much you may try to help them, because they just don't want to get better. I think there's a lot of instances in the show that could point to him maybe wanting to, but the biggest scene for me that shows he doesn't, is the therapy episode (Bobo the zebra episode). It shows that therapy could have helped him so much, and yet once it became therapy instead of "friendship" like he was pretending it was, he ran away instead of sticking with it. @sage-leaves It's the lesson of not being able to help everyone. My grandmother used to be the type of person who always helped everyone she could despite being incredibly poor herself, but in the process neglected her and her children's needs. She also remarried alot, thinking she could "fix" people and ended up in a ton of abusive relationships. It wasn't until 3 years before she died she got someone who stayed and cared for her. While it's good to help people, there are some people you just can't. You have to focus on yourself first and not waste all your time and energy on one person who doesn't want or try to get better. I've had to cut family myself because of how depressed and worthless they made me feel despite trying my hardest to help.

I relate to this so deeply honestly I remember when I knew my very friends that are still with me today I remember how they said they couldn't understand why I was always trying to please or help people who hurted me actively in ways that did leave bBad feelings in my fragile brain, why did I have to waste my empathy on people who clearly didn't change in the slightlest and that just took advantage of me At first I was troubled because I thoight "if I don't I feel like I'm abandoning them when they need some kind of support, they need help" But I realized after a little time "but no matter how much I try they won't accept that help" I am much better now that I know when to stop and let go, even if it's sad, I'm still kinda stubborn about it sometimes when I feel there might be a chance but I still stop for my own well being Now ironically enough, after that change they called me selfish and self centered when I decided to just set boundaries, but I was not surprised

A little thing I haven't seen noticed about Todd's confrontation with BoJack that I think is neat is that when the scene begins the camera angle is focused on the front door and the general clutter. But once the conversation focuses more on BoJack's personal faults, Todd walks to the back of the house and the camera focuses on the "Hollywoo" sign and the car in the pool; both bad things BoJack personally did drunk out of his mind. I thought it was a neat touch.

He was improving by the end, but it took so many chances to be better and so many years of hurting people for him to actually try, he was bound to die the way he did.
