I'm trying to highlight rarities in hopes that they can be re-released or have some sort of spotlight on them. I highly endorse emulation within the first minute of the video and this problem has been going on long before I've been around. It's insane that this is one of the only areas of media that doesn't want to actively make older products more readily available. I'm very thankful for archive websites. I worked at a retro game store during the height of the pandemic, and boy did those prices rise! We had a loose copy of Cubivore for the GameCube that was, disc only, $300.

As long as you don't scratch up the label side of the CD or store the disc in extreme conditions, you don't really need to worry about disc rot. Even GameCube games that have peeling labels will still work because of the plastic on both sides. Disc rot generally requires the metallic layer to be exposed to air, which is difficult for DVDs and Blu-rays unless it was a bad disc pressing.

@baronvonslambert Most/all cases of disc rot I've seen are due to issues related to the pressing plant. For example, Warner Bros. had this issue with some of their DVD releases a while back. I haven't seen examples of this with video games. Of course, you want to store your media in a reasonable location and manor, but the concern about disc rot (as far as video games are concerned) is currently lower on the rung compared to scratching.

Funfact: Snatcher is part of the Metal Gear franchise, the main character has a Metal Gear Mk. II as his sidekick, similar to the one Snake uses in MGS4 (though Snakes is a newer revision with modern tech). There’s been a lot of studies showing Disc rot is likely going to be much less of an issue than already thought. Excluding older CD titles and Dreamcast GD-ROMs, its I think under 4% of discs in the next 25 years are at risk of rotting. As long as you store your games in proper humidity and temperature, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Def Jam: Fight For NY - The Takeover on PSP is probably the most affordable version of the game, and it's still not even close to cheap. It's a very faithful and critically acclaimed port that just never sold well from my knowledge, and it's probably as cheap as it is because it's a handheld game on the fairly inexpensive PSP. Still, it's one of the most expensive games on the console at a mindboggling $90 CAD avg. for a CIB copy, however you can play it officially without missing your mortgage by just getting it digitally on the PSP, you can still buy it on the PSN store on PS3 and transfer it to PSP (or just mod the PSP, like duh).

I'm lucky to have bought a good amount of games over the years before they got expensive. But the one I regret missing out on the most was a copy of Hagane: The Final Conflict for like $12 in the early 2000s. I'm pretty sure I passed up a copy of Demons Crest as well because I hadn't heard of it, but I vividly remember checking it out for awhile and deciding $12 was too much. To be fair I was a broke kid and looking for games in the under $5 range.

I used to own a copy of Solorarobo, and that game was Hella fun. It felt like playing 2 seasons of great anime with pretty enjoyabe combat ant racing. The other one was Dokapon Kingdom (and Journey to an extent) which I just played and beat with a group of friends (using the Connect version mind you) honestly not as bad and "cutthroat" as people say it is. If you're just all chosing not to go after each other (to an extent), it's a fun romp that isn't even that long.

you forgot the best about def jam ny, all characters had different styles of fighting, when you create one, you could pick i think 3 different styles out of a bunch. Each style had different attacks and if you combined them youll get new moves. This is something many fighting games really lack in my opinion. You could play the campaign many times and it would still be fun.

When it comes to to Def Jam: Battle of NY, I've actually found the discs for both the Xbox and PS2 versions at yard sales in the past for just $1 each. And funnily enough, a few years back I was at a random yard sale and saw the Gamecube case in a bin for $1. I immediately scooped it up, but when I opened it there was a different disk inside. So now I have the PS2 and Xbox discs without the cases, and the Gamecube case without the disk.

Most expensive games I own are sealed 11 Neo Geo games that I bought in 2008. The shop was selling them between £30 to 60 and now they are over the £400 for each of them. They still sealed as I don't own a Neo Geo but I can play them on other consoles like the Dreamcast, PS2 Neo Geo CD and PS4/5.

We all fantasize about striking it rich finding out something we've owned since childhood is worth a bunch of money. I was actually a bit disappointed when Children of the Atom only goes for around $100. I got that game for Christmas around 1997 when I first got my Playstation

Collecting retro is just like collecting anything else that’s gone out of production. At this point I just buy a repro case and the discs to some old games I played as a kid, I got a MiSTer to run all the games I want up until the N64. I didn’t even own a N64 since I was a PS1 kid… Thinking about buying a phat PS2 and missing it with a hard drive at some point so I could just download and play those games on a CRT

The armored core games were so good, but were absurdly hard to find even in the nineties, although i did see their closely related cousin Front Mission 3, but it was pretty expensive even back then.

Just wanted to add to the video. There's also Flash carts, Optical disk drive emulation, and Soft modding. A long detailed explanation in case your interested: Not only is emulation an option for most people that can't see themselves spending thousands on a single game but, there is also the option for Flash carts like the Everdrive. So you can still experience the same games on native hardware including being able to run rom hacks as well. There's also Optical disk drive emulators like GDEMU for the Sega Dreamcast. Just like in the name you can throw in a huge collection Sega Dreamcast games on an SD card and the console will believe that there is a disk game running on an optical disk drive. Can't forget about the soft modding scene as well for consoles from the 6th to 7th gen console which are much easier to do now a days as long as you have a computer or laptop. 8th gen on the other hand is still in work progress the ps4 is hard to mod do to security updates that sony has pushed and its all thanks to hackers selling off security weaknesses to Sony for a profit. It will probably take forever for the soft modding community to be able to get all software updates of any kind to be soft mod-able.

I got crazy lucky a single time buying games/consoles a few years ago grabbing a 2DS which my son now has - the person left a copy of HeartGold in it and I was already getting OmegaRuby and like Sun or something. I even said something and they said "eh just take it." It wasn't as expensive as now but still I was like "ok" lol. I loved the original and the remake when I was older anyway so 10+ years later having it again to play was pretty rad.

Idk if this counts but I had a NFR Pokemon Emerald I got for $70 before pandemic. However, I sold it for $25 because a local game store manager said they were the same as every other regular cartridge and convincingly explained it to me...safe to say I never supported them again.

fun fact: i’ve had three copies of Def Jam FFNY. once when i was 8 and lost it, once when i was 10 and lost the case and the disc got scratched badly and eventually lost, and a third one when i was like 13 that i swore i still had but cannot find for the life of me. or maybe it was Def Jam Vendetta, im not sure.

I paid 6 bucks for Misadventures of Tron Bonne in like 2006, had it in storage for like 12 years, had no idea it was valuable till 3 or 4 years ago, that was definitely a nice surprise

Man i found a copy of marvel vs capcom 2 for dreamcast and a dreamcast my early college days and we played none stop for weeks. Id always wanted to have a cabinet of it. So many memories.

The rarest thing I've got is a boxed copy of Panorama Cotton, one of the best shooters of the 16-bit era. Bought it for $150 a long time ago, last time I checked it's going for 4 figures D: It's really a shame because more people should play that game
