These 4 episodes took around 5 years to make, so they had more than a year per episode. I get that that's not necessarily how a production works, but just to put it into perspective, and it was delayed multipled times to achieve the quality it deserved. So what could've happened during production to get this drop in quality as early as episode 2? It seems they even changed animation studios between episode 1 (Fugaku) and episode 2 (Akatsuki). It's not that it's terrible, but if you compare it to how polished the first ep was, the contrast makes it seem drastically worse.

Rumours are going around but it might check out that the original Creative Director/Director for the show was "let-go/fired" (potentially for the time/amount of money for the animation it took?) and it got outsourced to other companies/animators after the 1st episode. Whether that will be true for the rest of the episodes remains to be seen but yeah, honestly major let down and essentially even if the above is the case, there was no reason within that time span even during "covid" to have it be that much of a downgrade.

To be honest, I've honestly only noticed 2 significant moments where I noticed the animation was really off. The first being when snail guy (honestly can't remember his name off the bat while writing this comment) walking in and his animation just looking really off and gross. His entrance was EXCELLENT in the first episode, I get that first one would have extra detail cause it was the first "shock" panel, but there was almost no sweat, water, slime, or anything. The second one was when the cast were running on the beach, and good god they seem to be expert drifters. Straight up running sideways. Besides that, I honestly didn't really think I noticed a significant downgrade in the animation. Hell the preview for the 3rd episode is TERRIFYING, the particular chapter (no spoilers) it covers is my favorite. The anime isn't perfect, I'm getting neckpain from the pacing, but I'm still really enjoying this adaptation, at least significantly more than the other attempts.

@@Brakthir You mean the scenes where characters are just talking? What you want them to spend a mil on 40 seconds of animation of the characters walking through the graveyard? If you rewatch episode 1, the quality is exactly the same for the slower dialogue heavy moments, and they save the budget for the grossout, clossup, body horror, what have you. The pacing isn't a problem that's unique to episode 2 either, this was a problem we all noticed both episodes having.

@Gamer36046 you're joking. Look at the scenes of characters JUST talking in epiaode 1 vs episode 2. Kirie in episode 1 tries to imitate Shuichi's father's eyes but fails. Here, they just look at each other. Also if youre gonna cheap out on animation for talking scenes, that's fine. That's common in ALL animation. But at least give me good compositions. The compositions are flat as fuck. You know what, forget the composition. They cant even get proportions of the characters right. You spend like 2 minutes looking at Kirie and the male lover talk with heads twice the size their body. Like bobble heads. I dont care whether you like this episode or not. But to claim that the downgrade isn't obvious is straight ridiculous

So I read Uzumaki on a Junji Ito binge 10 years ago, and just re-read it after the disappointment of Episode 2. The contrast between the original and the adaptation is enormous and covers a number of aspects. Episode 1 had decent animation and creepy moments, but it had minor issues that became major issues in Episode 2: (i) Removing/truncating buildup and plot-relevant/plot-essential exposition. Not mentioning that Dragonfly Lake (or Pond?) is in the middle of town would be fine if the visuals conveyed it well, but they didn't for me (ii) mixing and condensing a bunch of chapters into a very time-constrained episode (iii) altering where and when events in a single storyline take place, changing the vibes and context of each horror encounter. The Azami plotline from Episode 1 suffers from this, because it looks like a bunch of chance meetings until the end, whereas her stalking in the manga is more ominous (iv) Leaving out or pointlessly inserting scares. e.g. The scary panel that ends the "hair-battle" storyline gets cut out, so it seems like the other girl is getting tired and hanging onto some powerlines. The jack-in-the-box "scare" is supposed to happen in a quiet scene, not the immediate aftermath of a horrific car crash - then they make the actual scare a post-credits stinger. Silly. There was definitely a way to make an Uzumaki adaptation work, but the approach taken here was wrong even before you account for whatever budget/production/talent issues led to the severe drop in quality. I am very interested to see what the hell they're going to do to end this anime. The manga ending happens after 600+ pages of a slow descent into madness and suffering - this is a headlong sprint into madness with Berserk 2016-esque animation

Why people aren't leaving ? 1) It could be the influence of the spiral that make them slowly turn collectively insane. 2) It is a very Japanese attitude to trying to ignore a problem to avoid "making a scene". You have to do like everyone, and if no one make the first move, no one will. 3) There's a message on how when we become adult we tend to rationalize the absurd/unnatural despite the clear danger and focus on the wrong priorities : "Yeah, weird stuff are happening in town but, I'm not gonna leave like that! I have work tomorrow, studies, projects, my family to take care of. My whole life in this town! Where would I go ? How will I make money ?"

@Cathart1c3 ай бұрын
The thing that is important to remember when you read Junji Ito's manga or watching the anime as in this case is that it's basically fever dream. Nothing makes sense here and people are acting completely irrationally. That's deliberate narrative choice by the author, he isn't even trying to tell a comprehensive story, to be blunt he makes some concept, like "what if this guy just suddenly turned into the snail?" and just goes with it without trying to be anywhere near realistic. Style over substence as they say. It can turn off very many of people but it's just how it is. Funniest thing is that Spiral is actually one of the most comprehensive Ito's stories 🤣

I don’t want to spread any false information, but at the very least there seems to be a consensus that the director for the first episode was basically fired at some point during production (before series was finished). I’ve seen people saying that the director for the second episode is supposedly someone “blacklisted” from the industry which seems like a stretch. In any case, a lot of the work for episode was outsourced to tons of different other studios, which might explain the drop in quality somewhat. In any case, hopefully we at least get a few more eps like the first one but yeah if it continues like this then it’s going to be pretty sad.

I don't mean it in a rude way, but I do think you're exxagerating. though to be clear, I too noticed more shakey animation here (well, shakey isn't the right word, but you get what i'm trying to put across) than in the prior, but like, of course if you see a review telling you "feel this way.", you're going to pay extra attention to feel that way. I would reccomend going into a story without seeing how others feel first. again, this isn't me saying your criticisms are unfounded, I felt this way too when watching, but to me it was "that's off, but look at how hard this clearly was to animate? stuff is gonna fall through the floorboards with 3D animation sometimes". I just find it impressive that it can stay so high quality alot of the time, frankly. and to be fair, it's only when characters are doing really active stuff that the animation becomes strange; with this not being an action story, I think that's really understandable, it must be tough on the production team, and it's only minor errors. that's just how I feel, though. loving the Uzumaki reactions. I know you weren't saying it was unwatchable or something like that! It just felt appropriate to give my own view on the work. I did prefer episode 1, but that's more a narrative thing. I really don't think most the episode at all looked weird.

Please. This isn't people complaining for the sake of complaining. The difference is there and it is quite clear to most people. Just because you don't care much or notice animation doesn't mean others don't. If I wanted just the story I would read the manga again. the characters stupidity is pretty funny, but to be fair, I do sympathize with the author. afterall, if the characters are smart, it'll become a thriller where they're trying to break the curse, and could even devolve into an action story, since ambition tends to turn into action. or even a political drama if the government got involved..? military science fiction where military tanks are trying to shoot spirals? my point is, I get that choice to make the characters really dense, so keep it within the genre.

Idk why it happened, but just look at characters when they’re walkng, when they’re talking, etc. and look at similar scenes of shuichi and kirie talking and walking last ep. You’ll notice a clear difference. Like I said in the ep, it’s not at the point where it’s unwatchable. There are many cuts that maintain the level of detail from the first ep. But so much of the episode in between looks like a bad one piece episode.

I suggest you watch them again, you can see the difference from the get go, the characters move more robotically, there's heavier use of plain cg, instead of the redrawn rotoscoped characters. There's a scene in which Shuichi's mouth doesn't even move while speaking, the art quality in general dropped a whole lot, except for a couple shots here and there. Moving up and down the stairs inside the lighthouse was poorly handled. The drop in quality from the first to second episode is drastic.
