Think of it like this but do mind me exaggerating a bit to get the point across: Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli sees the world as a rather dull, grey and sad place to live because he's able to imagine such wonderful, adventurous and colorful worlds. Junji Ito is a wholesome man that loves his cats, living and the world we live in because he's able to recognize it's essentially paradise for him compared to the nightmarish world's and lives he's able to imagine for his stories.

It's because budget. There's just 4 episodes, my friend. I know episode 2 and 3 will be probably longer, like 35min long, aprox. But not enough to cover the whole story. They're gonna remove and mix stuff for sure. So it's understandable why they structured the plotline this way. The biggest loser in the story is the sense of tension and suspense as the pacing is hyperfast. But I blame the chichen shit investors. This masterpiece have a more-than-cult following. Sells like candy. It should be obvious and straightforward to finance an 8 episode season, at the very least. I think the "lets do a black and white" anime adaptation scared some fat wallets from this production, perhaps. Maybe COVID and experimentation or some other production-related problems arised that we may never know, but I mean, this needed a budget of david production's JJBA for fucks sake.
@go_golden2 ай бұрын
@@Afreshio That's just speculation, on it being 4 episodes due to budget constraints. I doubt they would have worked on this for 5 years if they were pressed for budget and time. The pacing works for anime, I personally like the fact that they are joining the stories for a motion adaptation. There is still tension, it's different, but adapting things exactly the same as manga isn't always the right call. You mention JJBA, and you might remember that David Pro's Stardust Crusaders was a 1:1 adaptation of every chapter keeping the episodic nature of the first half, and it was criticized for being exhaustive and having a slow pace due to being too close to the manga. Different mediums and all that.

I am a fan of Hiroshi Nagahama, the director of this work. Nagahama has adapted many manga into anime, and his approach varies greatly with each work. In Japan, manga is a medium expressed in black and white, so I believe he is trying to animate the drawings as faithfully as possible in this work. “Uzumaki” was drawn by Junji Ito at the end of the 90s, but the history of horror manga in Japan is long, and Ito is a writer who revived the old-school style of horror manga. Nagahama has openly stated that he was strongly influenced by the works of Kazuo Umezu, one of the oldest horror manga artists in Japan. This work attempts to directly translate the old-school style revived by Junji Ito into anime. Therefore, I understand that some may find it lacking in balance as modern entertainment. As for Nagahama’s other anime adaptations of manga, I recommend “Mushishi” and “Flowers of Evil.” Especially “Flowers of Evil” was a unique work that received very mixed reactions when it aired.

@Afreshio2 ай бұрын
You always react to HQ stuff. I'm glad about that. Yeah the waiting has been long. I've been longing for a Uzumaki adaptation since 2010 or earlier. But I didn't fully read the manga back then. It wasn't until 2012 I did and I was flabbergasted! I showed panels to my then soon to be gf (now ex) and we were just amazed by the artwork. Also something that allured us was the themes of being cursed by a town. Which touched both of us on a deep level because that's how as young Venezuelans felt, and even more so in our shanty ass town. I was like the protagonist: idealistic, anxious, gloomy and very moody. Always feeling like the first guy to announce the Titanic was sinking but no one paying attention. That a curse was upon us (and in some ways it was, and it still is) and slowly but steadily invading every aspect of our lives. I sensed a foreboding, a classical sense of impending of doom. It eventually came to pass as the country basically collapsed. We left shortly, contrary to our protagonists. The themes and fate of this cursed town reminded me of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. Not exactly the same but the cyclic nature of the curse, and the fixed tragedy of fate is right there. Also the way characters behave in Márquez magical reallism's works and Ito's eroguro nansetsu style... somewhat similar! Anyways the ending of Uzumaki and the aforementioned piece of literature left me with the same sense of shock. Back then I told her the only way, the proper way to adapt this masterpiece was just to respect the ink of the sensei: just use graytones, meaning zero color. I never believed some studio or producers would find the budget by pitching this simple but controversial idea. I also was disappointed by the previous adaptations of shorts that used color and you can see how Ito's vision suffers greatly. The frequent complaint about the pacing (was too fast) and that I also share is obvious and right. But as we know the budget wasn't that great and the sacrifice is runtime which I understand and respect. I wish people weren't so gray-prejudiced but at the same time I understand why most people are just that way. The result is less budget for this bestselling masterpiece which is fucking heartbreaking. Even with black and white... shit, maybe thanks to that they should've went all-in with the budget as this work has a massive following. Even here in South America the VIZ English hardcover edition print sells like hot pancake... I blame the philistines and the blind investors, honestly. Goddamn misers and cowards! Well enough for the rant and ramblings. Your reaction was interesting and delightful as usual. Forgive me if I commit grammar mistakes I fast type with little redacting because tendonitis.

Being quite honest, altho i really love the black and white aesthetic here, i dont think color takes away from Junji Ito's art, its just that all the previous adaptations sucked that badly in art design. Color could be used to make those creepy illustrations look even more disgusting, use of texture etc. But tv anime duo to their schedule a lot of times make bad decisions when it comes to color choices, the fourth season of AoT comes to mind with their compositioning and finished colored drawing omitting all the detail from the genga and whatnot. Its a matter of execution! But again, i really love the black and white look of it.

This was the impossible adaptation and for the moment they showed some trailers and this first episode drop, it shows us that little by little we can adapt mangas that were thought to be unadaptable. It's not just the money, it's not just the licenses, and it's not just the name of an acclaimed work, a good adaptation is one that was made by people who respect, love, and understand an author's work and want to do it justice. Can we please now have an adaptation of Vagabond, 20th Centuary Boys and Berserk?
