Percentages screw with people. Just like when a retailer marks everything down 20%, and then says “save an additional 10% if you use your store credit card”. Most folks walk away saying I saved 30%, nope. 30% off of a hondo is $30. 20% off a hondo is $20 and then the additional 10% off $80 is $8’ for a savings of $28 not $30.

I remember a time when my SnapOn guy would come over to the house at the end of the day and we'd drink beer, bullshit and I'd repair broken air tools. While I truly believe SnapOn battery operated tools are a rip-off, how many other companies will come to the shop you work, extend credit to someone they don't know and deliver and replace tools that clearly abused. SnapOn also has one of the worst warranties on their battery operated tool, typically one year. Milwaukee has a three year warranty on the tool and battery. Sears would replace Craftsman tools, but you had to drive to a Sear store. Toward the end, Sears wanted to replace USA made hand tools with Taiwanese tools. Yep, Craftsman is 1/3-1/2 the price of a SnapOn tool, but there are some specialty tools that Craftsman doesn't offer.

14.4v is 4cell 18650 in series. 14.4 is nominal voltage (3,6v x 4) This can be connected in configuration 4s1p - 14.4v nominal 2.5ah or in 2s2p - 7.2v nominal and 5ah. The '12v' battery from other brands are from nicd/nimh era. Nominal voltage of lijon 12v is 11.1v for 3.7v cell and 10.8 for 3.6v cell. Max voltage of 4s lijon is 16,8v and for 3s is 12.6v. Charged lijon is 4.2volt. you can easly calculate their voltage:)

The original Snap-on 7.2v hand tool battery packs included just the two vertical batteries with a flush fit bottom. When they went to 14.4v tools, they promised backwards compatibility with the new battery packs, which of course have twice as many cells inside. You tested at both +/- terminal sets on the battery, but did you look inside the tool to see which contacts were used by the tool? 7.2v tool vs 14.4v tool?

Just in case anyone is confused... The chemistry of the cell (check periodic table) determines its voltage. A lithium cell will have a 3.6V specified cut off or minimum cell voltage, and this is used to determine the battery voltage. A battery is a collection of cells. When added in series or end on end the voltage adds and 2 cells will give 7.2 volts. (When connected in parallel the voltage stays constant but it can supply twice the current). So four cells can be configured either as two pairs in parallel, series connected for 7.2V with double current capacity. Or all four in series for 14.4V.

Those 2 plus and minus terminals seem to be coded with a square and a circle - what happens if you check the voltage between the terminals opposite of each other rather than next to each other? Actually now that I am sitting and thinking about it, I betcha the tool itself contains the circuitry to either parallel or series the 2 sets of 2 cells inside the battery. All it would need is a jumper in the right configuration based on whether the tool wanted 7v or 14v.

Yup, old battery tech but a good one...Samsung 25R out of the Malaysia factory. Surprised to see it in a power tool pack! Better 18650 cells are available now, like the Sony/Murata VTC series and Molicel’s P26A, but they’re probably at least a dollar more per cell. I think the voltage readings were weird due to the wrong terminals being used? It looks like there were square and circular depressions for the pos. and neg. terminal indicators. You measured the voltages using a square pos and circular neg and then you measured voltage using a circular pos and square neg. Maybe the voltages need to be read using square pos/neg and circular pos/neg? If that makes any sense at all.

This video makes me wonder a bit about how they build these batteries. It was obviously not made to be taken apart, so why was it put together with a pair of screws? Was it to give some sense of quality? Because if it had been ultrasonically welded or even glued together it would have been at least as strong if not stronger than this. And as it's not coming apart anyway, why not weld seal it permanently?

So what’s crazy is that Milwaukee’s 12v stuff is more powerful than snap-on’s 18V stuff. If only we could give 14.4 volts to Milwaukee’s 12v line

The batteries are probably $20-$25, BMS board $5-1$10, case 3D print under $5 and you have a replacement for 1/3 the cost off the truck. The 4 terminals are so that the voltage configuration is done on the tool, + to + and - to - gives you 7.2 v and 5 AHr, or connect in series and get 14.4 v at 2.5 AHr. Same battery for different tools.

:( I was hoping you would show more of the inerds. Were it 2 separate 7.2v 2S circuits? And would the wiring within the tool crosslink a +&- to put the 2 in series for 14.4v and other tools put them parallel for 7.2v and double the amps?

No clue but I've been running mine for over 4 years at this point and still works good while many co workers who bought the milwaukee have had theirs crap out on them. Not to mention mine sees the most abuse and use. So the Snap On might be a fair bit better though it does cost 3 times the price. That said one of my co workers have burned through 2 and is on his 3rd milwaukee cordless ratchet. Also yes the common failure on those milwaukee is the horrible paddle which might as well just snap it off when you get it since it'll do that in a month anyways then the next to go is the anemic pin that the ratcheting mechanism works on that is if the switch doesn't snap off after the paddle snaps off.

I think the sander you bought it probably the most over priced piece in the 14.4v lineup. The driver’s rocker trigger mechanism is what makes so much better in a flat rate setting. I have a 1/4” ratchet that was given plenty of hot supers throughout its life. I’d be more than happy to donate it to the empire of dirt for a tear down.

good to know i didn't get complete shafted on the fap-off batteries . my 3/8' electric ( same as in vid ) has been going strong for 4 years , haven't had to send it in for a rebuild yet . though i've cooked my 3/8" impact for the 3rd time in the same time span . I absolutely love the little sawz all ... drill is ok but sudden stops from trigger release and the clutch will spit the tool you are using out

It's not an "extra battery" as in a bonus. They have to use 4 batteries to get the dual voltage. Each 2 batteries are connected in series to form two circuits, depending on the tool, they are either used in parallel to get 7.4v or in series to get 14.8v. nothing is done for free or as an "extra".

AvE not your best BOLTR, sorry - do we get to see the circuitry inside, and did you solve the voltage? Does it switch like flexvolt or is it possibly 14.4 when taken across two opposing terminals? Seems like you opened it, looked at the cell brand and there was 4 and that was that. Would be interesting to know about the rest of the internals as usual? Unless I missed something...? Cheers.

I attempted to take one of mine apart not long ago and gave up with the two cells that run vertical. Toite as frig!! The only issues mine have are the terminals seem to get loose and the jeezlus tool will not work unless you push the back of the battery in, and after so long they don't hold a charge well. Granted, I've gotten my money's worth and then some out of them. I run my 3/8 impact and 3/8 ratchet to hell every day. In fact, I bought two of the impacts just to dual weild!! Also, they're about a crisp Benjamin off of the truck in the great country of Texas.

Samsung 25Rs are about $3.50 each in single unit retail cost, I can only imagine what they cost in lots of 10,000 to Snap-On. The monitor board can't be more than a buck or two. I don't know how much custom molded cases like that cost to make, but I can't imagine it's more than $5. I know retail value-added product is usually about 3-4x material cost, but even $80 US is a ball squeeze.

Those 25Rs are really cheap, but very good for the price. I used them in some projects because they were so cheap. I just checked the prices and they are even cheaper now, a shop in the Netherlands sells a single 25R for 3Eur with even lower bulk pricing (down to 2.15Eur for 600). So I guess the cost of making one of those battery packs is somewhere around 15-20USD.

I've had my snap-on mini impact and drill since 2014, never had to buy new batteries. Although they do have about 80% of the runtime from when new, but what can you expect. On the impact however, ive had to send it in because the lights on the front quit, and the nose kept coming loose. It is starting to do it again, for how useful they are and how small they are with the amount of power they bring, i don't regret buying them one bit. On the other hand, when they die, i am going to go to the Milwaukee side, for the simple fact that everything about them is cheaper wit the exception of quality. Just my .02
