I haven’t touched my guitar in a year because I got really depressed. This song makes me want to pick it up again and learn this.
@JoZeeland2 ай бұрын
@@joshchapman4753 Hey thanks so much. That means a lot! I really hope you'll feel better soon. From my personal experience, music/art is a really good outlet for bad states of mind like depression. I guess this is why this song appeals to so many people, since it seems to be a direct result of depression/very negative emotions, turned into music. Accordingly, I wish you all the best - and hopefully a lot of fun with this tune 🙂 Take care Jo

Got through it. Sometimes I think that way: we learn from life so slowly. To the contrary, sometimes i think that life is too much. In any way music and art help me to escape from that aimless loops of rumination. God bless you, hope we all learn our mindfulness lessons.

Hey folks! Did this one super spontaneously - I checked the song out in the early afternoon and the video was done 4 hours later, essentially :D I'm actually a huge Bon Iver fan and have covered multiple of their songs way back when on my channel: Skinny Love, Wolves and Creeks, respectively - the former two being among my earliest videos ever. Anyways, since this was made purely from a rush of blood to the head (...get it? ;D;D lol), I don't have the tabs yet *BUT* depending on how things go and how many requests I get, I can *absolutely* make a version with on-screen tabs; Just let me know, will ya? :) Many more vids coming your way very soon! Thank you so much for your continued support and take care 🙂 Jo

I’ve never been good at finding exact chords by ear, but this song is so straightforward I came pretty close just noodling around last night. Then this came up on my feed and completed it for me. Thanks, man. Sounds great.

Hey thank you so much! So good to hear this was helpful to you :) Yeah, I feel you. The basic, underlying harmony is super straight-forward, but there are some nice little details in the specific guitar arrangement that can be a little tricky. Either way, really fun to play, a wonderful song all around! Cheers and take care - Jo

Amazes me how you can perfectly nail this song when it just came out... So much talent! Nice video! The strings in this song are so beautiful you don't even need to hear the lyrics, but the lyrics are so rich as well.

It almost sounds as though you double tracked it with two different takes - but I can see you're doing DI and a mic capture, so the amazing spacious effect you're getting must be through blending these + some plugin chain. Would you mind sharing how you achieved that? It sounds fantastic.
@JoZeelandАй бұрын
Hey thank you so much :) Yup, that's pretty much it already. Just two different mics recording the same guitar (condenser mic + DI), then I set the signals to about 50% pan L and R, iirc, and just used some standard audio processing tools. I think the "doubling" effect comes from me attempting to play as precisely as possible over the notes of the backing track, ie the actual song running in the background. If I had actually doubled the guitar for this one, it would have sounded way too messy, since it was difficult enough as it is to play over the original :D as it's not set to a click track. Hope that has cleared things up! Let me know, will ya? :) Take care - Jo

I’m working on a version in open C low with a capo on 7, but the cowboy chords sound really good, too.

Thank you! Your tuning sounds interesting as well - and more than fitting for a Bon Iver song for sure :) Good luck with it and have fun! Cheers Jo
@JoeyRackovan3 ай бұрын
@@JoZeeland I want to say he did Re: Stacks in something very similar (more likely open D, based on where I initially learned it). Open C low is just open D with everything dropped a full step. I was learning some Phoebe Bridgers songs, and I started using it because it’s got some very riff-y potential for what I like to write.

@red_dune898Ай бұрын
Technical question, why do you have two chords plugged into your focusrite? Is that for the mic and another one for the guitar? Just curious because I'm getting into recording guitar as well
@JoZeelandАй бұрын
Yup! Two different "mics" recording the guitar: 1) direct input = pick-up system inside the guitar and 2) the condenser mic that you see in the bottom-right corner of the screen. You can then pan the two signals slightly left and right in your DAW to create more of a full surround sound, since the mics record the same thing, but still sound quite different and complement each other nicely :)
@OliverBergMusic3 ай бұрын
Hey great cover! Just wondering, are you using a pick as well as finger picking, or just finger picking?
@JoZeeland3 ай бұрын
Hey thank you so much :) And it's just fingers! I used the line-in signal from the guitar pick-up system in addition to the condenser mic for recording. That gives it this super bright, direct sound, which you'd usually get from playing with a pick. Plus, heavy use of fingernails for the strummed parts :D I'll try to explain it in the tutorial later this week!
@DomTheHammerMan2 ай бұрын
How confident are you at the 1:37 part? Can’t quite hear how he does it in the song
@JoZeeland2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I do think it's pretty close to what's happening in the recording! The "chord" should definitely be correct; what the strumming hand does could be a little different, but since the song, or rather the repeating riff, has so many tiny variations, I think that this is close enough, I guess :D Cheers and take care jo

@JoZeeland3 ай бұрын
Hey thanks so much :) The condenser mic I use is an AKG P 220. However, for this recording, I did also use the line-in signal from the guitar pick-up system to emulate that super bright, close sound from the original. Hope that helps :) Cheers and take care! Jo

@JoZeeland3 ай бұрын
Hey thanks :D Really happy with the guitar as well. It's a Martin 0-X1E and it cost about 700 bucks at the time I got it (about a year ago). However, I just checked and it appears it's now "retired" according to the official website and I can't find it in any of the big music shops either. That's a real shame if you ask me :/ Wasn't too pricy imo relative to how good of a guitar it is...

Nope! Didn't play this with a pick, fingers only! I used the guitar's pick-up system in addition to the condenser mic to record the guitar. That usually gives it a super direct, bright sound, similar to playing with a pick :)
