*Timestamps* 00:00 intro 00:56 capo + tuning 01:17 main riff tabs + guitar cam 02:17 main riff tabs only 03:19 a few thoughts on strumming/picking 04:01 mini bridge 04:35 solo 05:18 outro / final chord Some additional thoughts: 1. What can be a little trippy is that the riff starts not on the first down beat, but on beat #3. If you counted that beat as your "one", it would create the illusion of a 6/4 time signature. However, it's most definitely in 4/4, for if you count the first proper chord - the x-x-10-9-8-x with that hammer-on - as your "one", everything falls into place as 4/4. It's very noticeable the first time that signature, fast picking riff kinda repeats (but actually plays different notes) at 1:57, it comes in - again - on the third down-beat *WHICH I MISREPRESENTED* in the tab screens, dang it :D :D But yeah. It is what is. Riff comes in on the third down-beat, count along accordingly :) It kinda tripped me up a little bit when I started working on the cover. 2. "0" in the tabs obviously means the capo'ed seventh fret, all other fret indications disregard the capo. So a "10" is also fret 10 without the capo, not 7 + 10... if that makes sense. 3. Be sure to use the fingernails of your strumming/picking hand for the strummed/stroked parts and not just the skinny inward parts of your fingers (really don't know if this is the anatomically correct way to describe that...hope you catch my drift) to get more of that bright, direct sound that 's so prevalent in the expressiveness of the original - if that's what you're going for! Anyways, if I can think of anything else, I'll add it to the list. And obviously ask away if you have any questions :) Cheers Jo

Great tutorial man, just one thing, it would be easier to follow along if the fret numbers where shown in relation to the capo not the actual fret #. So this would be 2 & 3 and so on instead of 9 & 10
@JoZeeland2 ай бұрын
Hey thanks so much :) I see your point. I honestly think it comes down to preference, really. I used to do it like you suggested in my tutorials, but then at some point, I changed it to the current method, since I kept making mistakes when always having to consider the capo for fret indications - *especially* when tabbing out lead/melody guitars that use a capo. So I decided that for me personally, it makes more sense to see the fret board in an absolute way and not relative to the capo. You're right though. Maybe for a song like this one, which only moves between three frets, it could have been more useful to provide relative finger positions! Definitely noted for future vids :) Take care and all the best - Jo

Just like to back up the comment above yours. I guess as you posted this to teach people, the best way is chords in relation to the capo, pretty much never seen it this way in my life, and I assume 99.9% of others coming here haven't either. No, get used to this way, frets are notes which is more important than numbers like 2 or 3 frets.
@philippberdenisvanberlekom4623Ай бұрын
@@johnnyguaman611 Don't think this makes much sense unless you also change all 0s to 7s, but then reading becomes a pain in the ass because the 0 is such an easy indicator that you do not have to care about the frets :)

@JoZeeland2 ай бұрын
Hey any time! Thank you so much for your kind words :) Oof, I'm really not good at rating guitar difficulty :D But I'd say, in the realm of alt/indie/folk music whatever, this would be...maybe a 5/10 in terms of difficulty? Not super beginner friendly, but also not crazy tough. I genuinely think that if you start by playing it at the tempo I do in the vid, it's somewhat manageable for at least intermediate players... But yeah, if you want to play it in the tempo of the original, then it's probably not beginner friendly, no... Anyways, let me know if you have any other questions about this :) Have a good one and take care - Jo

@@antonioponce8123 Thank you :) For future videos, I'll definitely consider which of the two options makes more sense - in my opinion, there *are* cases where a general notation makes more sense even with a capo (which may or may not be the case for my next Bon Iver video 😅) Buuut that being said: Yes, for this specific song, it would have absolutely made sense to provide finger indications relative to the capo! Sorry, pianist turned beginner guitarist here, so sorry for the question, but what part of your finger are you using on your down strokes and your up strokes. It looks like you are holding your pointer and your thumb as if you were holding a pick and using the nail of your index finger for down strokes. Harder to tell on your up strokes. Thanks :)
@JoZeelandАй бұрын
Hey no worries :) Perfectly justified question! I've actually never addressed this in any of my videos, so I don't even know exactly how to explain it, but yeah...here it goes :D I guess I either do the strumming parts with my 1) thumb and index pressed together (as if holding a pick), which I do in this vid, OR 2) my thumb and middle pressed together OR 3) all three - thumb, index, middle, pressed together. The fingernails of index or middle then typically do more work on the down-strokes, nail of the thumb doing the up ones; *However*, since the fingers are pressed together, it's honestly hard to tell which of the nails does more of the down or up-strokes :D "Glissando" down-strokes, I will often do with just the nail of my middle or index finger, of which there are quite a few in this one. In that case, I will unclench/separate my thumb and other finger. Sorry, this might have been a bit of a confusing answer. Essentially, I use either of the three combos explained and I then literally play it as if holding a pick. I've been playing for so long that it's become absolute second nature to me, so yeah...kinda hard to verbalize it, but I still hope that this has helped :) Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions! Jo

@@JoZeeland It would be great to publish the tab alongside it, I can learn from the video but once I've got the gist I would like to still have the whole tab in front of me without have to mute you and play along with the video everytime. @@phillardi Appreciate the feedback, thank you! Honestly, I'd never even thought of publishing full tabs outside of the videos, since I've started doing these on-screen tab vids only recently. But come to think of it, it's definitely something I'll heavily consider for future videos, especially when it's a tab that's a little more complex and takes up as many screens as this one. For short and simple riffs, I think only having the screens is fine, but yeah. I can definitely do some adjustments in the future :) Thank you and take care - Jo

@@AcousticJamesSGP All good, I appreciate it :) As I've said under another comment, I think it's a question of preference. I used to prefer finger indications relative to capo as well! Did it all on the time on the channel. But idk, I guess something's just changed and now I prefer universal indication 🙃 I think it's mainly because imo it's more beginner-friendly, since at that stage you might not have internalized what C-major, Gsus4, Fsus2 etc. look like in any position. However, I do admit that for a guitar part with that little movement between frets as this one, relative might have been better, while also not being totally beginner-unfriendly 😅 Long story short: I'll consider it for the next one 😄
