bonafidepirate, steady as she go's. Wonder if you have an idea of the range with the little yagi you have in your diversity setup as a stand alone?
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
I've been using that little yagi for a little while now trying it out. I've found that it performs very similarly to the patch, it's hard to tell the difference in them. I haven't used it by itself yet, but I will just to confirm later. For what it's worth, the diversity usually sticks on the yagi. For this flight when I was turning back at 10 miles, I looked at the indicator lights on the Eagle Eyes, and it was still using the yagi. The only time it switched was at 5 miles when I was low and the signal was bad on both.

Top notch video, Keith ...., very informative. Now you've got me torn between selecting a Skyhunter or a Mini-Talon. I wonder how well the Mini-Talon would work for cloud surfing comparatively ?? I would assume that the Skyhunter would handle winds a bit better; but I may be wrong as I don't own either one. Thanks again for the in-depth video.
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
Actually I think the Mini Talon handles wind at least as well as the Skyhunter. I only have one flight with it in the wind so far though, while getting it set up. I think it's higher wing loading helps. They are both very nice FPV platforms without a doubt. I think the only place the Skyhunter will be a better choice is carrying more payload. For example, a heavier pan/tilt with a GoPro has little effect on the Skyhunter, but will be quite noticeable on the Mini Talon. You can also load it up with a ton of batteries to long range flying. That said, the Mini Talon can carry more than I have in this one and cover just as much or more ground on a full load than the SH. The Mini Talon would be FAR easier to transport too. It will fit in the back of a small car full assembled, and is still much much easier to break down than the Skyhunter if you do need to take it apart.
@xigxagz8 жыл бұрын
Great !! Good point regarding the size difference between the two. I may just have to order a Mini Talon then. 10 miles out and back is probably farther than I'll ever go !!, also I've got a extra bit of 5 mil laminate that I may cover the wings with for a bit more durability. Thanks for the reply and the video !!, I appreciate it :)

I’ve enjoyed your video with your narration, much more interesting than watching videos with music, no information other than what’s on the screen with those. Where I fly I don’t have the freedom of air that you have, I’m on a flight corridor into two fairly local airports south to north and one north to south, height is my foe! However, using flight24 I can see the commercial flights with their height recorded, it’s the GA and gliders that are the real problem, so no great heights without a buddy lookout.

Love your whole ground station set up! That rocks !!! Keep the great Vids coming. Right now I have the blue beam Omni's RHCP. Will that yagi work with the Omni on my plane?
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I want to make new videos, but the Mini Talon and Skyhunter are both down right now... lol Skyhunter is getting a "refresh" of sorts, going through and updating some things and just tidying it up a little. The mTalon is still awaiting a new ESC after the last flight. I've been too busy lately to finish up the Skyhunter. I'll get back to flying soon enough though. ;) As for the antennas, the yagi is a linear antenna, not circular like the Blue Beams, so you'll lose some gain mixing the two, but it will work, to a degree. It will perform better though if you use a linear antenna on the plane as well, a simple dipole will be a good match for it. I use the ones from fpvpro.

Hi BFP been flying some time now and anxious to do FPV long range soon. Excellent flight path window, scenery and weather you have there.Nice setup!!!.Your doing my dream, here I have lots of trees in foreground makes it difficult ...would dragon link cut through it and wondering if it would be better for you to install uhf antenna outside of your shop for better reception?Are your videos antennas inside or out?Very good equipment too.Have fun..Cheers
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
The lower frequency 433MHz signal will penetrate the trees better than your video signal will. I'm betting you'll lose video before control. I don't really notice much difference with my DL antenna outside or inside. Raising and lowering it makes a noticeable difference though. Just mounting it high on a tripod allows me to fly a lot lower while farther out than mounting it low on my radio. My video antennas are outside on tripods.

Thanks for helping me get involved with LRFPV with your channel. Quick question, with the pan/tilt camera, whats your indication on the OSD/FPV that the camera is centered forward after moving it around? Thanks for your time.
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
There is no indicator on the OSD. On my radio there's a little detent at the center on the sliders which makes it easy to find center. On my old Futaba radios they would beep when the slider was centered, which worked OK but I like the detents better on the Taranis that I'm using now.

Running the power from the trainer port to the dragon link, Do you find the Dragonlink is slightly under powered? What does your radio put out at the trainer port? 10 miles with the antenna inside your building was impressive. great flight.
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
I used a Futaba 10CAP on this flight, with it connected to the trainer port. The radio supplies the battery voltage to the Dragonlink, I use a 3S Lipo in the radio. (A Turnigy 1C 2650 made for transmitters) The Dragonlink should operate just fine on 5-18V, and changing the input voltage shouldn't change the RF output, at least not withing that normal range.

Is there much loss in db when using an extension cable to your tx antenna? I've seen 2 schools of thought on this. Thanks! Love your channel. Fergy
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
There probably is some measurable loss in the cable, but I haven't been able to tell the difference. Even if it does reduce the signal, getting the antenna up in a better location is enough to overcome it. It definitely performs better with the short extension and antenna mounted higher up, then with the antenna down on the desk on my radio. I know some other flyers use the same cable/magnetic mount to fly from inside their car in the winter. In that case, having the antenna on the roof of the car which acts as a nice ground plane is another benefit.

Hi Keith, another great informative video... just ordered a mini talon for my next project and have a question with regards to the pan and tilt you are using.. how does it compare with the fpv gadgets propan or the propan 2?? Many thanks in advance Dave
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
I like this printed one since it allows me to look straight down over the nose of the plane. It's also a bit smaller and lighter than the Propans. It's probably not as durable, and you don't get ball bearings on the tilt, and you have to have access to a printer (or a friend to do you a favor! lol) but it does cost a lot less. So there's positives for both. If you're looking for more tilt range and don't mind a bit of DIY and tweaking to get it working well, the printed one will suit you. If you don't need to look straight down and want something ready to go with minimal work and don't mind paying for it, Propan!

I haven't flown in a different location in years, it's too easy to walk out the back door and go fly... lol I thought about putting the UHF antenna on the roof, along with my video antennas. Very cool. Love the commentary. You get good GPS lock even with 1280 video. What's the separation between GPS Rx and vid Tx? Do you use any notch filters?
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
My video receiver and antenna are on the left wing, about where the aileron stops, not quite all the way out on the end. The GPS receiver is on the top of the fuselage behind the top hatch, in the little recessed area. I don't use any filters or anything like that. I'm using 800mW on 1258MHz. I haven't had any issues with GPS lock yet. Even my Skyhunter with a 1500mW vtx in the wing, and the GPS receiver in the fuselage locks fast.
@jetrg127 жыл бұрын
Bonafide, I see you have gone through the skyhunter, skywalker and now this mini talon frames, which one would you advise me as a mid to long range fpv plane? I like the 1.2m wingspan of the mini talon but it seems to fly amd land fast
@bonafidepirate7 жыл бұрын
Any one of them will serve you well. The Skywalker is slow, but very easy flying. The Skyhunter is a great plane all around, it's more responsive than the Skywalker, and can fly a little faster, but still fun and easy to fly. The Mini Talon is faster than the others, and super efficient. Also smaller and the wing comes right off in two pieces, much much easier to transport in a car or something like that. It is a little harder to launch, but nothing real bad, just needs a good throw every time. ;) It also stalls at a faster speed, it comes in fast and needs more runway to land. It's not a bad flying little plane at all though, and handles wind better than the others, especially the Skywalker. The SW is like a big kite in the wind... lol

How do you set link quality when using a v2 rx? My rssi out of the v2 rx is from the rssi port then into the rssi in on the Vector and it looks lke Vector is looking for the rssi to come in on the ppm stream so you can assign a ch to it in the Vector gui so it can give link quality. But the rssi on the v2 rx is on it's own port,how did you set yours up (wait,are you using a v2 rx in there you know the full size ones).?
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
I'm using a micro rx in mine. My last flight was actually with the Dragonlink V3, but all the flights before that were V2. I do have the RSSI in the PPM stream in the Mini Talon just to simplify the wiring a bit more. I have the larger 12CH receiver in my Skyhunter though, and use the regular analog RSSI on that one. In the Vector, you can select which channel RSSI is on if it's in the PPM stream, or if you use analog RSSI it will detect it when you run the RC wizard. Just make sure you have the RSSI ran from you receiver to the RSSI port on the Vector before running the Wizard. You can run it again to pick it up if you've already ran the wizard before, just make sure all your trims, throws, and channel reversing are set up right, as the Vector will of course re-learn all that as well. ;) I've forgotten and ran the wizard with low rates on, and it messed up my throws and things in different flights modes.
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
Oh one more thing, with the Dragonlink, you'll get RSSI, and not what the Vector calls "Link quality", which is pretty much based on lost packets. The RSSI is based on signal strength.
@Flyznflyz8 жыл бұрын
Ahh the micro rx,i see! Thanks for pointing out the miliamps/dist used i didn't even know the Vector had that,got it on the screen now! My last flight on the MT i got 158 mah/mi.

I watched the MT set-up video, you had the 400mw VTX in for that, but you stated you were going to swap it out for the 800. Was this flight with the 400 or 800mw? The reason I ask is my friend has gone and got a 1500mw 1280vtx to go with EzUHF Radio Link. Is he going to have problems with a VTX that powerful on a Mini Talon? i.e is the VTX going to swamp the Radio Link?
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
This is the 800. I have a 1500 on my Skyhunter and haven't had any problems with it. As long as he keeps the antennas separated a reasonable amount it should be fine. I haven't used EzUHF, but I've never had an issue with a vtx knocking out Dragonlink. I have run into problems getting a GPS lock on a quad with a 1.2/1.3 vtx too close to it though.
@blackbirdboy18 жыл бұрын
bonafidepirate I'm considering going UHF myself this year. I recon it will need around $1000 all in for the antenna's & Tx's Eagle Eyes Rx's to put in 2 planes. but I could save a fair bit by using EZUHF instead if DragonLink. I know it's the best though, so I only want to buy ONCE!!!
@axiomNES7 жыл бұрын
Do you run a separate battery for your VTX? I got a MT on sale from BG and I am trying to decide how to power the VTX.
@bonafidepirate7 жыл бұрын
No, everything runs off the main pack. The vTX in mine gets power from the Vector, which regulates it to 12V and filters motor noise out of it. In other planes with different flight controller / OSD setups, I've used a Sepic type regulator to tap power from the main pack and power the FPV gear. The Vector just makes it easier. ;)

Okay. I will be running a Pixhawk. I guess it worth it to pay a premium for the vector!

Confused how heading hold maintains altitude ? Assume it must be trimmed for level flight but how does it maintain efficient glide path without stalling? Great system. I am building first inav plane so I am on the steep learning curve.
@bonafidepirate5 жыл бұрын
2DH mode holds heading and altitude. I have it set to disable altitude hold below a certain amp draw, so when the motor is off it ignores altitude and just holds attitude on pitch, keeps it level. It still maintains heading, but lets the plane glide and descend as the airspeed drops. It attempts to keep the plane level on pitch axis but with the gains and how the PID loop works it actually lets the nose drop a few degrees and holds it there, which works out well for the glide.

If there's any loss in the cable, having the antenna mounted higher up is more than making up for it. ;) I find I have better RSSI levels when flying far/low using the wall mounted antenna, than when I hold the radio/antenna down behind the monitors at my desk.

Hi there really nice video ,one question how did you set the vector to disable altitude hold under 2 amps ??? thanks
@bonafidepirate7 жыл бұрын
There's an option somewhere in the software, or maybe it's in the stick menus (or both), I don't have the info in front of me right now to see. If you can't find it and I don't reply again, remind me and I'll look when I'm at home. ;)
@twinturbostang8 жыл бұрын
On the launch in 2D mode, do you just hold a little bit of up elevator and let the Vector do the rest?
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
twinturbostang Yeah pretty much, I actually have a mix in my transmitter that puts a bit of up elevator with a switch so I don't have to hold it.
@twinturbostang8 жыл бұрын
Very cool. I wasn't sure if that disabled the 2D mode or not. Some modes I think are disabled if you move the sticks. Maybe that's just RTH though.

Great video as always....!!!! Just a quick question what kind of video tx are you using on you new plane.
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
I have a 800mW 1.3GHz transmitter from Ready Made R/C, with a FPVPro dipole antenna. I have the US version of the transmitter that has 1280 and 1258MHz channels. I use 1258.

WOW!! What a great vid and beautiful scenery I just received my mini Talon, I sure wish i had your set up or actually your location I am in eastern WA in the city. I would give anything to launch from my back yard and just fly. Great work super impressive keep it up. P.S. thought i was subed. I am now, and really like what you are doing

im flying the mini T with the vector. what is it in min 11:55?
@bonafidepirate7 жыл бұрын
You mean "Level settings saved"? I reset level in flight, you can do it in the air when the plane is level to set it, rather than landing, settings, flying again, etc. 5 toggles of the mode switch will trigger it. The manual for the Vector goes into a little more detail, but that's pretty much it. Make sure the plane is flying straight and level, toggle the mode switch 5 times, and the Vector will re-level the gyros, or at least re-save the level setting. You'll see the AHI on screen should match the actual horizon more closely.

@bonafidepirate, cool setup. Could you do a video, split screen, showing how you launch outside, power off the transmitter, disconnect and reconnect inside? I think I understand, but not 100% sure. Hoping if I can see you go through the steps it'll make sense.
@JasonKyzer8 жыл бұрын
thanks for posting this! what gimbal are you using for the camera?
@mdcbert5 жыл бұрын
just to be clear, this was in "feet" for elevation and "MPH" for speed? Most of these vids I see are metric, and 47 mph seems kinda fast for an RC plane..
@bonafidepirate5 жыл бұрын
I'm in the US and use imperial unites. It's miles and feet. 47mph isn't fast for this plane, it's efficient. This one as it is will easily handle over 100mph in a descent, the airframe with enough power will do that in level flight. 67mph seems fast for an old bust too! ;)

Nice video as usual; is the speed GPS or Airspeed? What's the stall speed for the mini talon?
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
It's GPS speed, I don't have an air speed sensor on this one. I may add one later though. The stall speed seems to be around 20-22mph for this one. The weight is a bit under 1600g, if I remember right it was 1574g.

what do you think about the wa5vjb yagi? do you still use it?
@bonafidepirate7 жыл бұрын
Yep, every time I fly on 1280 or 1258 now, I use it along side the patch just because I have both. Honestly I'd be fine for pretty much all the normal flying I do with either antenna.

what are your thoughts on the pepper box antenna from Getfpv?
@bonafidepirate7 жыл бұрын
Personally I never saw much benefit to using circular polarization on 1.2/1.3 video. I understand the theory and can't argue with it, and it definitely works well on higher frequencies. It's just in practice, I didn't see a ton of improvement, if any most of the time. I couldn't justify the increased cost. Maybe if you were flying in an area where multipathing was killing your video it would work well, but the lower frequency tends to penetrate much better through most objects/vegetation, so it reflects off things less too. Those reflections are what causes multipath, and that's what circular really works best to fix. One other scenario where circular might be more beneficial is if you're flying with a buddy and stepping on each others video, running right hand polarization on one rig and left on the other would help them "ignore" the other signal better. For me though, flying alone out in the country with no other signals present, and not a lot of surfaces around to reflect the video signal, linear has proven the better option.
@edmoreno93087 жыл бұрын
i wish I would've asked sooner because I just bought a pepper box. I'll give ti a try, most of my set up is close to yours. I'll make sure I watch the rest of your videos, it looks like you can save me some money. Thanks!
@bonafidepirate7 жыл бұрын
Try it and see what you think! It may work wonders in your area... lol There's so many factors at play when it comes to RF signals. For what it's worth, I never used a pepperbox or even a crosshair, I only used a helical with similar gain to the patch I was comparing it to. In the air I used 3 lobe cloverleaf and 4 lobe skew planar wheel antennas.

Can you give me (us) an idea of what the setup you used would cost to put together?
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say really. You'd have to put together a list of everything and get current prices for it all. It would be a lot to start from scratch though, all at once. Most people tend to start simple/cheap then build up from there over time. If I put a definite price on everything in that little shop right now I would probably tell you I was nuts... haha

Congrats on your new PB m8...:)....20 Miles on 3000mah....LOL....I think we should inform Greenpeace...:)...Can you remember which VRX antenna it prefered 10 miles out..?.....8 dbi Patch or the compact Yagi Panel..? I just read the Yagi Spec, it's centred on 1280mhz..Just right for me..:)
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
The diversity seems to stick on the yagi most of the time. I looked when I turned back at 10 miles, it was on the yagi. That said, in the past flights where I've been using them both, I'm manually selected one or the other and haven't seen much difference in the signal quality. If one is bad, they're both bad. If one is good, so is the other... lol I would say this little antenna is a cheap alternative to the patch. One of these days I will do a more formal and direct comparison. Right now though, I can certainly say it's worth the price, and would even work mounted directly on some goggles since it's small and light, relative to the larger patch.
@EnglishTurbines8 жыл бұрын
+bonafidepirate Yes, Im liking how compact the Yagi is myself...I love my 8 dbi Patch but this Yagi is quite a bit smaller. I really like my Patch though, as the beam width to fly in is extremely wide, which is nice because I dont need a Tracker....As for the Yagi, I would like to see how wide the beam on it is and side lobes if it has them? I see the Yagi is made in Texas..!!!...and yes, I have been there myself some years back..had some great Steaks while I was out there.....!!!.....:)....I ordered a 1280 Yagi using your link....$16 delivered...:)
@bonafidepirate8 жыл бұрын
I haven't actually tested it, so this is just theory, but this little yagi is relatively low gain, slightly lower than the patch even. It's lower gain than most yagi antennas. I'm assuming that translates to a relatively wide gain too, and not so narrow like high gain yagis. As for side lobes, I have no idea... lol I'd like to see a plot made for these, but I don't have the equipment to do it. I'm just a humble FPV pilot... lol
@EnglishTurbines8 жыл бұрын
+bonafidepirate Yes, I agree...I imagine it would perform fairly well behind as well as in front compared to the Patch..A bit like a Dipole but directional maybe..?....Anyway, at $16 delivered I ordered one last night and within the hour it was posted..!!!!...LOL... $10 Delivery charge to UK. I want to make my 1280 relay Module a bit smaller if I can, Im already using the compact Lawmate VRX..Do you still have the 400mw vtx on the Talon..?....Like you to fly the Yagi on its own if possible....Thanks...:)
@twinturbostang8 жыл бұрын
I think you have the space to test the beam width. You could do some East-West flights with both antennas pointing due South, and then compare them.
