This is my review of the Bondic Liquid Plastic Welder. Sorry if the video is a bit long but I wanted to show everything that I did while testing this product.
So Bondic is not a glue or weld as the packaging claims. But yeah it is really a glue, just it doesn't dry it "cure" or "sets" in the traditional sense. When exposed to UV light it hardens.

Sir: Thanks for the video. I use the Bondic kit for several hobby, home, shop, and professional applications. Note that the instructions indicate that the cure time for the fluid is 4 to 8 seconds. This assumes a continuous beam; not a moving, discontinuous light. When you apply and cure with the UV light properly, the stuff is very strong. It is basically a permanent fix for swimming pool skimmer covers, various feedline fixes, and more. Be sure to keep the light shining on each portion of the fluid for at least 4 seconds. Professionals usually hold the light for at least 5 seconds. BTW, I have fixed a couple of glasses that are very roughly treated around pools and they never break where fixed with Bondic. Good luck.

I, too, feel you're not giving it sufficient UV light exposure. However, I think the greater problem is that, although the stuff hardens well, it seems not to adhere to the pieces.

I use this stuff for tying flies, used in fly fishing and it is awesome. The fact that it comes in a pen shape and I can use a very time amount of resin at any time is great. I haven't used it outside of fly tying, but the resin does hold up over continued use in most water conditions.

Seems like you should use the light at least three seconds on each area that is no greater than circle of light. When you waved it along the bead, I don't think every part of the resin was receiving three or more seconds. The instructions included in mine also say 4-8 seconds.

Good review, aligns with my experience. It is not bonding well to many plastics. Its fast set is appealing but not if the bond is not good enough. Seems to require too much surface fill which defeats the purpose of an elegant repair.

I think the key to this is that bondic isn't a glue and doesn't create a strong bond with most surfaces. However, if you drill key holes so that the bondic has something to key into, then you should get a better result. For example, the broken glasses could have a hole drilled into each part to be joined and then the bondic could effectively tie the two parts together. It's real value is the rapid curing, and clearly won't be suitable for all repair jobs.

the problem is your apply too much at once, if you add a thin layer and put the light and then add another thin layer and add light it works better, because when its too heavy the light is only curing the top 3 seconds is not long enough too cure whats underneath that's what i think..

I think it works as intended BUT its price ($20.00+) is 4 times more expensive than a 10-second super glue ($5.00+) sold at the big box stores. Quality? Although no available online performance test between the two, I have a feeling that it's no big deal. As a DIY guy, I've been using the 10-second super glue on wood, metal, plastic, and glass, and no worries whatsoever. So, as you have said, I'll pass on this product too.

In addition to longer exposure to the light, you should try joining the glasses pieces differently. In the ad they have running on KZbin, the guy fixing a broken stem on a pair of glasses, applied some bondic to the surfaces that would touch. Not around on the outside of the broken pieces. That would occur later to address the aesthetic of the mending job. But to actually fix it the guy in the ad applied the bondic on the actual break.

curious how often the glasses fail was next to the bond, in the plastic.... would bond reinforcing lines have helped the plastic which may be prone to failing... the plastic could be brittle and not worth the expensive fix? Have been seeing some limits... a close up examination of the fail points on the adhesive side of the fail point, traces of the stuff it was glued to? Thanks for your efforts, I had been curious about this stuff for awhile.

Like most products, this stuff only works when you follow the instructions. If you don't, you get results like this video shows. It's not intended to be used like super glue, that's why it doesn't work like super glue. I just think most people aren't smart enough to understand why you have to use it a certain way.

Both epoxy resin and polyethylene resins used in surfboards are a two part resin using a catalyst. Also, just because there is no offensive odor does not necessarily mean it safe to breathe. Finally, I find it interesting that the ad for bonding says plenty on how hard the glue is, but very little about adhesion quality.

The person demonstrating did not hold the light over the area for 5 seconds, in almost all of the applications demonstrated. Running it quickly over the area is not the same as 5 seconds of constant exposure. Also, additional layers are added before the first one is cured. So if people criticize it, make sure it is applied appropriately before doing so.

Refill cartridges for this thing are apparently 4 grams, so 250 cartridges per kilogram. Yep, a huge markup, same way printer ink is retailed in cartridges for $100s or even $1000s of dollars per litre. A huge price premium for a small convenience. Might be a good product, but what you pay for the convenience is many, many times whatever the value of the product might be. A lucrative business model without a doubt.

THANKYOU FOR YOUR TIME AND VIDEO! It is definitely not as advertised in the slightest... EDIT: Any good glue, when a test is done to see how good it is, it should be like PVA with timber (Glue made for specifically glueing timber together). After the proper amount of curing time is allocated, you should try and snap it at the join, if it breaks anywhere bar where you fixed, then that's good glue. If it breaks at the point of where you fixed, the glue is shyte!

These UV materials cure very brittle, so any flexing in use/ testing creates the greatest leverage on a leading edge of the bond. This reveals how variable the bond is as well as the psi strength; straight pull tests are the only ones that might show some strength, but clearly (ha) the practical repair utility seems pretty marginal in his real-world test. Plast-aid has been one of the few surprisingly strong repair compounds, its major drawback being strong solvent and hours of drying time. You can even make replacement nuts out of it. Even standard epoxies look stronger than this UV glue, of course the only positive being controllable instant cure under UV light. Some industrial versions are apparently far stronger. PVC actually dissolves in solvents, so is one of the easiest to glue. This flat half inch square contact should be impossible to separate bare handed, so fails all around.

Due to the nature of light, UV is also light, it will not work because the light do not penetrate the material (in the glasses) to reach the fracture surface. It might work better if the material is transparent? Or, to make a gap , 1 mm or so, to let the light shine through?

I made it all the way to the halfway point of the video. I didn't want to read through 300+ comments so i apologize if this was mentioned but for the glasses you're supposed to rough up the MATING SURFACES and bond those together...THEN you go back and "bridge" the pieces by applying the Bondic across the 2 pieces. The way you did it in the video was just like if you wrapped a piece of tape around where the break was.

I agree with jeanette , a thin layer might be better. When using super glue or wood glue, a thin layer and compression works better , also it's UV light waves that cure the gel, not a heat element move light back so it's not focused to a small area . You could probably be a foot away for same results. Maybe??? Will probably glue fingertips together forever.

Just seems like it isn’t getting enough light. Instructions i found said about 8 seconds of continuous exposure. If you wath the way you move the light there are spots that are maybe getting 1 second. I would really hold that liight on each little section for maybe ten seconds and see if it makes a difference. Companies actually make a standard ca (super glue) that has a spray you use on it and sets practically instantly. Stuff is amazing for plastics like model making.

So 4 weeks later.... I did order 5 pens so got 2 free ones I could share with friends. With the postage they came to about AU$ 20 dollars each (I believe locally it is about $45 each!) I have repaired a a 300 mls mug handle with it. The handle had came apart from the cup with a clean break. The instruction says to file each surface but I did not think it was appropriate in this case. I did apply the UV light generously and even left the cup in the sun for a few hours afterwards. I would say it is very successful. I did not yet try anything else but understand it may not be ok with some other material. I was a little concern about the longevity of the product, 1 year... I do have very limited need for such a product and wonder if its cost is a reasonable investment. One item only is more expensive. So one would have to think twice about the value of what one would attempt to repair with it before ordering it...

And you need to actually count out, isn't it FOUR seconds, not three? That's a sustained four seconds of EXPOSURE to directed UV light. Not ephemeral wavings back and forth, that in themselves may not be four seconds solid. So, I get to learn something here: If you create a "long" weld of liquid material (say for this question 1/4"), and you only expose the one end to UV, will the curing process travel to the rest of the liquid weld, or do you need to expose the entire surface/volume of liquid to 4 seconds of UV?

Interesting sequence of tests. One problem I see is that you did not pay attention to the natural oils on your fingers, and cleaning the surfaces with 99% alcohol. Natural finger oils is the bane of all glues and “non-glues”. Another thing I noticed, many a time the UV exposure was less than 3 seconds.
@SergeyGalin

Would be more fair if you tried other glues on the same task for direct side-by-side comparison. My bet is that epoxy or CA won't hold the glasses better. Also CA usually permanently damages the plastic so when the seal breaks again it is hard to repair it one more time. Bondic (and hot glue) leave clean plastic as they fall off giving you a chance to repeat the repair if necessary. BTW epoxy will usually detach from plastic as easily as Bondic does and also leave it clean.

Correct, if UV light cannot reach the resin it will not cure. It's a good product just it's not an omni-use product. For what it does it does it well, if you use it outside of its specific sorts of use cases? There's far better products available to you. Using it as a glue? Not its actual intended use, it's more of a filler than a glue.

This testing reminds me of the postal worker who once chastised me for not sealing up a manila envelope well enough to suit him before mailing it. He proceeded to demonstrate how by twisting the envelope in all directions he could make the packing tape come off. wth? I told him, "you idiot it's not supposed to be twisted like that in the mailing system anyway!" Bondic is not meant to completely make a broken item as good as new. That's impossible. It's only meant to keep it back together for normal use.

I use it for fly tying and it is better than most UV Resins for this application. I do not use it for anything else.. Thanks!

Drill a 1/8" hole in each end of the glasses piecesso the stuff actually has something to hold.... An AC leakage dye flashlight would work better.

You are not doing The procedure right. You should keep under UV Light, at least 3 sec. You didnt!

If the light can’t see it it will not set. Sand th out side as well, over lap th joint by at least 1/8 on th out side all around. But joints do not work. Has th battery gos down it will feel sticky. Good luck, cheers! I think your light battery is going south.

on the glasses, maybe try joining the pieces first, then put the glue on the outside.

People people people.... Please! Everyone talking about it as a glue, this is bad glue... Oh it won't hold, it's not bonding, the two bits won't hold together... ITS NOT A GLUE! it's liquid plastic! It's not to hold two bits of material together, no no no... Its only a liquid plastic that is UV sensitive and sets hard to exposure to uv. You only use this to fill in missing bits between, like fill in gaps and holes... Or maybe make some nodes or bumps to something to add texture to some parts. You usually can super glue or two-part resin glue or pratley dough stuff together, and if there are some bits missing could sort of fill in the blanks or seal with it... Maybe a little hole in a headlight and glues take too long to dry as it's a bit runny and runs away or runs down so you can't fill with glue so one can get one of these pens with liquid plastic and have the uv light ready... And starting from the bottom of the hole you run some gel then immediately subject it to some light and it will set quickly and stay up along the ridge of the other plastic part... Then you bead another on top and again light it with uv and it sets, and so on until the crack or hole is filled... A bit like arc welding. It hasn't got great holding capabilities but it does fill with the control you need. A very niche thing actually. But you have to do it in good shade or indoors... Shield it away from sunlight or light whilst you work it, but once you are complete yeah sure leave it in the sun, it will only cure harder and harder 🙂 Understand?

How about you use the UV light properly? You just wave it over the resin for a second

Although I have not tried Bondic I feel that your technique is incorrect. Sanding to increase the bond is part of the problem. Sanding drives contaminates like oil from fingers into the plastic further weakening the bond. You must first CLEAN the surface, then sand it. This is basic to any adhesive / bonding product. Wearing protective gloves may help. As others have stated the products needs more UV exposure. Also the distance from the UV light source is critical. Double the distance reduces the amount of light falling on the object by half. This means if a perfect bond takes place at 2mm distance, holding the light at 4mm would require you to double the curing time. As others have stated I feel that the product was under cured.

Not many resins are repairable with adhesives. Nothing sticks. Years ago, I successfully repaired eyeglasses for a friend. They were made of cellulose acetate and I softened the edges with acetone and pushed together. This held brilliantly -- the damage was to the part where the lenses snapped in. A lot of stress there and the glasses lasted until styles and prescription changed. Some resins can be glued or cemented. Vinyls. Styrenes. Acetates. Most thermoplastics will resist all adhesives and cements and must be repaired with heat (welded), which is a skill, or tossed. Thanks for "exposing" an expensive and useless waste of money and time.
