@BW022 Жыл бұрын
There is a massive cultural difference between Asia and the west when it comes to swimming. I live on an island, everyone took kids to swimming classes, by our teens we'd spend ten of thousands of hours swimming in pools, lakes, and beaches. It was a rite of passage and something nearly every kid did. Even for me, when I'd do summer camp, I noticed how poor swimmers city kids were. Flash forward to my adulthood and I've travelled to China, Japan, and other Asian countries. They don't teach their kids to swim on the same scale. They have few indoor pools, zero private pools, too many people for lakes and river swimming, and almost no public beaches. Unfortunately, if you can't swim (and I mean like do 100m laps for a half-hour) then you likely haven't been exposed to ocean swimming, waves, tides, crowds, red tide, jellyfish, etc., etc. to gain a respect for them. It's like the outdoors. I see so many Asians wandering around lost, trying to take close up pictures of moose, leaving food out when camping, etc.

Aside from one of the larger more popular beaches here we don't have lifeguards on the beaches (we do at some of the lakes though. Partly because the locals aren't generally dumb enough to go swimming on the beaches usually) but put it this way. So many people drown a year that unless it's like an entire family or a young child involved the news don't even bother to report it anymore. Usually it's divers if they're local. Tourists are just dumb and can't read signs. Did have a little story about a bunch of idiot tourist teens getting stuck in The Tourist Trap, jellyfished and drowned. We don't normally get (dangerous) jellies here but every once in a while we'll get some come up all the way from the states.

Was always a pain to talk to them, and most of the time they had no idea they were mixed in with boat traffic and could barely be seen. Especially when there was a bit of a swell.

The swimmers at Bondi are lucky though, there's always a fair amount of life guards and they do their job brilliantly. At Piha Beach in Auckland, the rips are worse, and the beach is surrounded by rock. Can really understand these guys getting shitty, because the amount of deaths at Piha Beach alone is insane, mostly from people caught in Riptides that drag them into the rocks. Or the change of tide. Majority of those being the ones that don't listen. Lifeguards don't mind if you swim outside the flags, especially with a large amount of people. That'd be stupid to think they could all fit. But they tend to leave the larger groups away from rips alone, because they're not in danger, and those people tend to be a bit smarter about the rips.

One summer day, I innocently told my children aged 8 and 11 years of age at the time to try out their new buggy boards and to stay close to me because I noticed that the current was a little strong. Within 5 seconds both children were swept out over 150 feet in the ocean. My heart started racing and I screamed out to my son to pick up his 8 year old sister as she had lost her buggy board and was sinking in the water. I was screaming for help. My husband ran to their rescue as he is a good swimmer but the current was so strong that he too got pulled in. After so much effort and energy he managed to get to both of them. The 3 were hanging on to a single small buggy board. I recuperated the buggy board my daughter had lost and rushed to help them out. My husband gave me this one look I will never forget. Completely exhausted, he let me know he couldn't hang on any further. I was scared for my children's lives, my husband's life let alone for mine. I thought that we were all going to drown on that beautiful sunny day in Florida. By miracle a retired life guard, who was on vacation, came to save us that day. I had never heard of a rip tide and it's dangerous effects. I hadn't even noticed that there was no life guard on duty that day. At least not in the spot where we had chosen. By miracle we survived and learned a much needed lesson. From then on, we are glued to the life guard station, look at the different flags and warnings of the day and we have a different view on the importance of a life guard. Much respect for all of them.

I got swept out in a rip tide one day as a teenager at a beach that wasn’t guarded. Even though I was a part-time pool lifeguard and a strong swimmer, swimming out of the rip and back to the shore zapped almost all my energy. I owe my life to being a strong swimmer, but even as a strong swimmer, rips are no joke. I now only swim at guarded beaches and I’ve learned how to identify rip currents and avoid them.

Those girls in the ATV should have immediately been arrested. They did drink and drive. They stole the thing. That’s just encouraging them.
