“There's reasons why people have low bone density. They can either have high osteoclastic activity or low osteoblastic activity - or a combination of the two. Maybe they have low osteoclastic activity and low osteoblastic activity, which is called low bone osteoporosis.”
-R. Keith Mccormick
Dr. R. Keith McCormick is a chiropractic physician specializing in the management of patients with osteoporosis. He is the author of the recently released book - Great Bones: Taking Control of Your Osteoporosis and The Whole Body Approach to Osteoporosis.
Sports have always played a vital part in Dr. McCormick’s life. He is the former U.S. record holder for the most points scored in a pentathlon competition. Dr. McCormick continues to compete in triathlons of all distances and has completed six Ironman competitions, five of them after recovering from multiple osteoporosis-related fractures.
In this episode, Dr. McCormick discusses the role of bone turnover markers in the management of osteoporosis. Unfortunately, these tests are underutilized and they can give us so much important information. You don’t want to miss this enlightening interview.

Thank you Dr. Mccormick for a very enlightening talk about bone markers. I bought your 2 books which help me a lot on understanding my severe osteoporosis diagnosis and its management. I was able to have a better conversation with my endocrinologist. Requested bone markers before starting my teriparatide regimen, consulted a dietician for dietary needs and hire a trainer for strength training exercise, all these because of knowledge from your books. I am hoping I could get a consultation with before I start my medication. My bone markers are both within the normal range.

After listening to you Dr. Mc Cormick , I feel better about taking these medications providing that I have a physician who will follow the “protocol “ for prescribing them. My worst score on my Dexa was a -2.5 on my femoral neck. I’m not too keen on the medication they suggested taking nor do I feel like I need it just yet. I would like to figure why I have osteoporosis. I am pursuing going to a teaching hospital that has a clinic for osteoporosis. I am also improving on my diet and increasing my exercise routine. Knowledge is power. Thanks for the great presentation.

Dexa is a joke. REMS is what you want. I’m 70 female, totally increased my bone mass over the years and with REMS I am in the normal green range. I use weights and vibration plate, a weight vest when I walk and I go to Osteo Strong every week. And although I think Dexa is a joke, my last two DEXA scan has shown improvement every year.

I wonder what your opinion is on heavy metals. Some integrative doctors believe in a heavy metal detox first, as they prevent proper absorption of minerals such as calcium etc. But I think with our food sources at present toxic metals such as Mercury come back. Another point: I wanted to go back on topical oestrogen, latest studies say even women over 70 can take it. My problems with thinning of hair and bones started after stopping bio identical hormone therapy. Here again opinions differ. Would like Dr.McCormicks viewpoint. Thank you.

My red and white blood counts are always low; but I don’t get sick. Docs don’t seem concerned.

I asked 2 different endocrinologists to do the BTMs Bone Turnover Markers tests for 1. CTX, bone resorption &2. P1NP, bone formation And both refused, stating that Medicare (I have traditional A B + supplemental G) would not pay for it. 1 endo wants to prescribe the anabolic Evenity, the other endo recommends Reclast. They've done some testing. Both recommended big supplement of D2 along with regular D3 to up my levels, which are below normal. My GP doesn't want to do any testing except for Vitamin D. He says if I want medication, he suggests Reclast.
