CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Barrow Gang takes a young couple hostage and gets friendly with them.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based loosely on the true exploits of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker during the 30s, the film begins as Clyde (Beatty) tries to steal the car of Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway)'s mother. Bonnie is excited by Clyde's outlaw demeanor, and he further stimulates her by robbing a store in her presence. Clyde steals a car, with Bonnie in tow, and their legendary crime spree begins. The two move from town to town, pulling off small heists, until they join up with Clyde's brother Buck (Gene Hackman), his shrill wife Blanche (Estelle Parsons), and a slow-witted gas station attendant named C.W. Moss (Michael J. Pollard). The new gang robs a bank and Clyde is soon painted in the press as a Depression-era Robin Hood when he allows one bank customer to hold onto his money. Soon the police are on the gang's trail and they are constantly on the run, even kidnapping a Texas Ranger (Denver Pyle) and setting him adrift on a raft, handcuffed, after he spits in Bonnie's face when she kisses him. That same ranger leads a later raid on the gang that leaves Buck dying, Blanche captured, and both Clyde and Bonnie injured. The ever-loyal C.W. takes them to his father's house. C.W.'s father disproves his son's affiliation with gangsters and enters a plea bargain with the Texas Rangers. A trap is set that ends in one of the bloodiest death scenes in cinematic history.

These characters were based on H.D. Darby, an undertaker, and Sophia Stone. They were kidnapped by the Barrow gang a year before Bonnie and Clyde were killed. After B&C's deaths, Darby and Stone were asked to travel to the town where they were killed to identify their bodies, and Darby ended up assisting the town undertaker with embalming them. In real life, when Darby told the gang that he was an undertaker, Bonnie laughed and said to him that maybe he'll be working on her one day. Her joke ended up becoming true.

Man...I don't know how or where Arthur Penn found Gene Wilder, but he's so damn funny in this film: "Yes..we have TOO!" at :18, that look on his face when his girlfriend says "I'm 33," and that forced-laugh at 2:30. Mel Brooks must've seen Wilder in this before picking him for 'The Producers' the next year.

+TM Rezzek Actually this movie isn't how Mel Brooks came across Wilder, Wilder was working on a play that Mel Brook's girlfriend was also involved in, and Mel Brooks could come to visit his girlfriend frequently and often ended up talking to Gene Wilder as well. They became good friends and Mel Brooks promised him a role in 'The Producers'

A classic scene from a classic movie. A little side note that I was surprised to learn a few years ago. Blanche Barrow, Buck's wife, was captured in 1933. She was eventually released from prison and lived until 1988! Also, the way she was portrayed in the movie was far from what she was like in real life.

Saw this on Netflix, and sadly, I am now having trouble doubting the honesty of Mel Brooks, who in at least Producers DVD set commentary claimed that his wife Anne Bancroft "discovered" him when had a minor part in one of her plays. This role, which added good comedy to a very serious drama, made Wilder very much noticeable for greater film roles.
@user-rh2io7gm1l

It's true. *Gene Wilder* was still an unknown in 1963 when he did the play _Mother Courage and Her Children_ on Broadway starring *Anne Bancroft,* wife of *Mel Brooks.* She introduced the two and they hit it off. Around that time, *Brooks* was working on a Broadway-themed script and thought that *Wilder* would be perfect for one of the lead roles. However, it took several years before that film went into production. In the meantime, *Wilder* continued to do theater, including originating the role of 'Billy Bibbit' in the Broadway play _One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest_ (1963-1964) and doing a TV presentation of the Broadway play _Death of a Salesman_ (1966). Then he landed this bit part in _Bonnie and Clyde_ (1967) and immediately afterward was called to do the _The Producers_ (1968), which was shot before the former was even released. Both ended up being smash hits at the box office, and *Wilder* was even Oscar-nominated for the latter. Not bad for your first and second movies.

Undertakers represent death. At this point, to the gang, death is an abstract. Something in the distant future.They don't want to be reminded of it. They want to continue having carefree 'fun.' But it's immediately after this scene that things start going wrong. One by one, the gang ends up getting captured or killed. The undertaker's presence in the movie was foreshadowing their impending doom. Incidentally, the real undertaker they kidnapped ended up working on their bodies after the ambush.

They had good times, too. The photos they took in spring '33 and spring '34 attest to how well-dressed and well-nourished they looked. True, it wasn't like that all of the time, but it is also false to say that they were starved all of the time.

So why did they abduct these two in the first place? Just for fun? I wonder if they were really trying to recruit them into the gang.

This scene was inspired by the abduction of undertaker Dillard Darby and his lady friend Sophie Stone by Bonnie and Clyde in the spring of 1933. The gang had stolen Darby's car to use in a bank robbery, but they were immediately pursued by Darby and Stone in her car, which totally foiled their plans. This really infuriated Clyde, so he decided to kidnap the two, initially with the intent of killing them, but the gang took a liking to them, so they lived.

@@user-sc6qh1ik7s that and the gang probably didn't kill needlessly. They weren't Ted Bundy perse but rather they killed when they had to or when people were a threat. Dillard Darby and his lady friend Sophie Stone were likely not any great threat.

such an overrated movie, doesnt do the story of B & C any justice whatsoever, just a hollywood mashup of sensational tidbits of the gang. She doesnt even resemble Bonnie in the slightest, of all the haircuts to give her why not give her Bonnies real look? awful flick.
