Totally agree with every word Susan and Kimberlini said ! .. The cream of the world's singers have had a crack at this, but Bonnie brings me to tears almost every time I hear her heart-wrenching original version of this brilliantly written song ..The video of her is just perfect too .. Can see and feel her pain .. Wayne

The song was written over a six month period around 1990 by Nashville songwriters Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin in the hopes that Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler or Linda Ronstadt would consider it. Obviously Bonnie got it. But that's just data. Music connects for a variety of reasons. In this case, understandable lyrics that many people can relate to PLUS music with the exact amount of properly placed minor chords to mimic the painful, relatable lyrics. In the Bonnie Raitt studio version, Bruce Hornsby (with about a million other writing, contributing and touring credits) plays the piano that drips notes like tears in just the right places to compliment the song. I want to say how impressed I am that you took the time to research the origins of the song or were told that there was an original and you provided a live example of your reaction to the BR version. There are thousands of languages with millions of different letter characters. Music basically has 11 notes and it is the same across the globe. Imagine that. In order to do something special, memorable, something that immediately connects with everyone with those few notes is pretty impressive. The words, the music, her voice. Perfect. I'm happy other artists are covering the song and putting their spin on it. I've watched quite a few "reaction" videos. The reaction is always the same. "Oh my god that's a sad song. She must have been going through some painful relationship stuff." That's how fantastic the lyrics, music and voice work together in her version. The other version(s) are great but perhaps don’t immediately give you that connection. Thank you again for your video, your honesty and your hard work.

This is a more emotional version. The cry in her voice gives me the chills, and brings tears to my eyes.To love someone so deeply and know that they will never feel the same way, is so tragic. And the fact that she realizes it, but still wants one last night together before letting him go. Been a fan of Bonnie Raitt's for a long time. She has the kind of voice that makes you sit up and listen. She doesn't just sing the song, she lives the song, if that makes sense. Thanks!

Bonnie sings this in such a way that anyone who has had their heart broken truly understands this. It is heartbreakingly sad, and I cry everytime because I have been the one to sing these words. BTW - Bonnie has been around since the late 60s. I've been following her ever since.

Glad you've discovered Bonnie! She's one classy, talented lady :-) This was written by a couple of country songwriters, one of the best songs ever, imho. Plus, Bonnie's the kind of musician who's paid her dues and all the other musicians want to work with - the piano you liked so much was her buddy Bruce Hornsby, another of the same class. She supported him on his "Rainbow's Cadillac" like he did for her in this song. I love his playing because it reminds me of how my dad played - here's a live performance where she appears kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4S7gH6rbZJ-m7c One of her most well-known songs is "Let's Give Them Something to Talk About", which you would like, very sassy ;-) Another female singer with lots of rasp in her voice is Melissa Etheridge, whose "I'm the Only One" and "Come to My Window" are always on my playlists. I continue to enjoy your reactions! You've got great taste and a fun personality, very real....came for the PTX, but often I'm not drawn to the rest of what reactors create...you keep making me want to watch your other stuff because it's all so darn good - thank you!!

Love both versions, but Bonnie's is my favorite. Bonnie Raitt is so talented. Bruce Hornsby piano is just beautiful. Her music has country, blues, rock, r&b and gospel influences. You mentioned in the video that her voice was so emotive. Maybe because she is an alto like Karen Carpenter. They have type of voice that is relatable and pure, and does not distract from the lyrics and the feeling. Bonnie does sing different styles in her music.

This absolutely IS the definitive recording of this magnificently sad song. Bruce Hornsby's emotional piano backup only serves to jack up the heartache of Bonnie's beautiful interpretation of the lyric. From what I've read, she had a hard time getting through singing the vocal without breaking down.

I love all your reactions and wondered if you have ever checked out The Judds or Wynonna as a solo artist. I think you will love them as well and Bonnie is one of Wy's sheroes. The Judds put out some lovely (mostly acoustic) music in the 80's and 90's and I think you will love their voices. The thing that made them so unique was that Naomi (the mom) harmonized LOWER than Wy and that doesn't normally happen. The harmony lines are usually sung higher. Please check them out.

Hey Matt, something I use to do in my youth, was when I heard a oft covered tune, I would seek out the various artists and compare and contrast. My favorite was a J. D. Southern tune,"Love has no Pride". Bonnie did it, Linda Ronstadt, and a little known singer with a huge voice, Tracy Nelson. Even if you don't react on your channel, you should check them out. Another song was a Bruce Springsteen song, "Blinded by the Light", done by Bruce and also Manfred Mann's band. Both are outstanding. Lastly, "American Woman", originally by the Guess Who, was covered by Lenny Kravitz.

Nice Fact - this song was written by Mike Reid. He was an All-American football player at Penn State. won both the Maxwell and Outland Trophies, and is in the College Football Hall of Fame. He was an accomplished pianist who graduated with a degree in music. Then he played in the NFL with the Bengals, earning two Pro Bowls. Since retirement he has had a long and accomplished musical career. Besides this song for Bonnie, he also wrote "There's A Stranger In My House" which Ronnie Milsap recorded and it won a Grammy for Best Country Song. Artists All - love the originals!!!
