PAISTE PST 7 * CYMBAL REVIEW & COMPARISON WITH 505, PST 5 & 2002

The PST 7s are now available. I bought the 18" THIN CRASH model (1189 grams) shown/heard here. The PST 7 are, in my opinion, hands down, the best b8 alloy cymbal value on the market.
I play and compare it to the quintessential 2002 18" crash sound (here in the video a 1976 18" 2002 MEDIUM, at 1444 grams), as well as to a 1985 505 18" CRASH (1397 grams) and finally to a 2012 PST 5 THIN CRASH (1377 grams).
***In all sincere fairness/respect to the memphisdrumshop dudes (they're great guys/players/a great store and I've bought stuff from them in the past), the 'mycymbal.com' rant in my video applies to only 2 or 3 videos I've seen (of course now I can't seem to find them on YT). In reality, in almost all of the 'mycymbal.com' videos, they do hit the crash straight off.
In fact, it's entirely possible the annoying crash video demonstrations I've seen might not have even been 'mycymbal.com'/Memphis Drum Shop videos.
Also, I am not affiliated with the Paiste cymbal company in any way. I've only tried to give them (as well as Zildjian and Sabian) my unsolicited advice on numerous occasions over the years, and for that I'm not sorry.

I've owned 4 pst7s including a 20" light ride and have hit some at stores...imo the gem of the line is the 19" thin crash. The one I have goes in my "I'll never get rid of this cymbal" category. For 140 beans shipped new it cant beat.

I'm with you Rob, I'd add the 18" thin to that category as well. I use the pst7 18 and 19 thin crashes with my pst7 20 ride, 2002 SE hats, 2002 17 thin, and a pstx 18 thin. Love the pst7 as a supplement to my 2002.

After the hundreds of drum and cymbal videos I've watch ranging from a kid playing in the corner of his bedroom to the big time fancy production studios and retailers you are by far my favorite person to watch on the topic. Just ordered some PST 7's - Medium Hats, 16/18 Thin Crashes, and Light Ride...if they sound anything like this in person, Paiste probably will in fact cannibalize the upper 2002 line like you're saying. They seem like a great option for people without a ton of cash to drop on cymbals. Great videos btw.

I agree - they are using the same blanks - the basic disc is cut, and they are all the same, then depending upon the hammering and lathing technique - that determines which "type" and category it goes into.

That "ring" out of the 2002s was one of the first sound characteristics coming to my ears the first time I listened to "Live In Japan" - Deep Purple...Very distinctive, like a "soft circular saw" in the end of each cymbal stroke. It made me love Paiste! Something cutting but still consistent.

This video was instrumental (no pun) in my decision to get PST7s when I recently got back into acoustic drumming. Ok, I was on a bit of a budget (but since I went for 14 med hats, 16 med crash and crucially the 18 thin crash, it still represented a sizeable investment for me), but your comments in this video about how and why the PST7 makes sense gave me confidence in the purchase. I too am a Paiste zealot. Not based on first hand knowledge, so to speak, as I haven't played anything else. Fact is I never would want to. My irrational allegiance is based purely on childhood idols playing Paiste and thus it's always represented the dream to me. I went for the 2002 for my ride, however. The PST7 rides just didn't do it for me when I played them in the shop, whereas the 2002 had the same brightness, but with added warmth. It sounded the real deal. And that's the brilliant thing about my PST7 crashes and hats. They may only be impersonating an expensive cymbal, but by God it's a bloody good impersonation. Dead ringers, one might say. I play them and there's no sense of compromise. Not to my uncritical ears anyway.

Thanks! I loved your explanation regarding how B8 sounds better from farther away. Spot on. I have been using Paiste for 25 years and I always have said it was because they have more "sound". At concerts, zildjian and sabian almost sound gated, if heard at all, from the crowd. The 2002's, 505's, and now PST 7 are the most noticeable but even the signatures have more glassy qualities than any zildjian or sabian I've ever heard and the craftsmanship is far superior with Paiste. There are two times over the years I asked Paiste about anything 'endorser-wise'. The first was in 1999 when a producer/studio owner my band at the time was working with was very impressed with my 602s and 2002s. I told him he should call Paiste and get a deal, that I thought they'd jump at the chance to have a relatively big Chicago studio have Paistes as the 'house cymbals'.. At the time his studio had a lot of high profile bands going thru, and he also had/has his name on a lot of bigger name recordings as engineer and producer; he was perfect for a deal for Paiste (as all the bands that came thru would see/hear his Paistes and hopefully be as impressed as he was with mine and go out & buy them). He laughed off the notion and sarcastically said that I should do it for him. So I went to the studio phone, called Paiste (800 number-on a Saturday night), left a message that said: "My name is so-and-so and I have a well known studio in Chicago and I have a band in and the drummer has all these great Paiste cymbals and they sound great, and could I have a deal. I'm high profile in the recording world", etc.. Sort of like the Risky Business's Miles calling the hooker "Hi, I'm Joel Goodsen and I'd like a good time in my home tonight" kind of thing.. Paiste called him back two days later and gave him a deal-the type where he'd get great great prices on the stuff. The other time was just a few years ago: I called them and told them about a Zep tribute band I was playing with and if they could give them (the band/band king) a deal on the 38" Symphonic gong (they had a few different drummers and most of the drum gear was the band-king's) as the gongs are so pricey-but the Paiste name is emblazoned right there for everyone to see... They turned it down as "everyone knows Bonham played Paiste". Which of course is true... All the other calls I made were to give them my unsolicited opinion on cymbals. I'm sure I drove them crazy!

Hey, it was worth the try! When I was a commercial photographer in NYC I always called up companies and asked for deals. Polaroid have me free film in exchange for using one of my images on their Type 52 film (4x5). Another interesting deal I made--a drummer named Tony Verdarosa gave Vic Firth one of my copyrighted images to use for their ads in Modern Drummer mag without adding my permission. Obviously, an artist/company has to pay for the rights to use a photographers work in advertising. I called Vic Firth--they were SO nice! I let them have the image in exchange for a box of jazz sticks! Ha! :) Anyway, I think you should get ALL of your equipment for free... I LOVE Paiste, and Im SOOO happy they made these... its like the 2002's of the PST family... I love the fact that Paiste (unlike the bastards at Zildjian and other major brands) makes affordable beginner/bargain cymbals... that actualy sound not just good... but GREAT! .. SO damn good that it makes you almost wonder why anyone would spend all that extra money on a real 2002!!!?? However! I rescently discovered this brand of cymbals... I traded a couple of mics and some other junk for 3 cymbals. ! was a cracked and repaired 1950's Zildjian Avedis 20" Ride.. and 2 of them were a brand Ide never heard of, but they immediately caught my eye because they were HUGE and also the hammering and lathing were obviously very high end work. They were "Dream" cymbals.. One is a Dream 24" Bliss small belled Ride..(it has a couple of chunks cut out where it had cracked, but still sounds amazing) and the other was a Dream Vintage Bliss 22" Crash/Ride.. Its perfectly fine but well played.. AND OMFG... I love Paiste, but I now am all about Dream cymbals.. For the Money They are THE BEST sounding cymbals you can get if you have a lil more money... They are b-20, hand hammered cymbals. I love their company now that ive learned how they work... They make only top of the line products, but they don't charge top of the line prices... for $150 you can buy a big ass crash from them that sounds as good or better then most $350 crashes... frotis lover I think they're overall too heavy for my purposes, but the Reflector lathing employed on them is great for the tone of a cymbal. Check out those hats on the website!

I love your videos. I just picked up a vintage 20" Sound Creations Bright Ride cymbal and am curious as to what type and size Paiste crash and hi-hats you would recommend in pairing with it. I am looking for moreSound Creation cymbals ideally, but am open to trying other Paiste's while I take my time to find them as they don't seem to come up too often on eBay. Jack Crouse I'd say get the 602's or the Masters or the Twenty Custom. Of course you could get anything, but sticking to B20 works if you want to keep your cymbals in the same SC vibe-area!

Funny shit! I hate the tapping too! And thanks for using the Bass drum! Cause that's the real sound to me. It's already to hit it plain, and most do, but you didnt! Thank God! I got one recently but it came blended, not too bad but is kinda noticeable to the eye in some weird way, i guess my brain is trained to see perfect rounded cymbals and with this thin crash is obvious that something isn't right, there is a safe correct way to fix it without causing any harm to the cymbal?

Dude, a bit late to the game with the comments on it, but ANYWAY! Your dig at cymbal.com made me bust a gut! I had an 18" PST7 china, and that thing sounded great but split along the'inner edge' or crest or whatever it is called, the "change in direction of the bow" part after 2 months. I was sad. But I do hit like a gorilla. Any issues with durablity with others you noticed? Just subscribed. You have an entertaining personality, and it is fun to watch your videos and how you go off on a tangent. Cracks me up.

Many lower end cymbal lines aren’t lathed at all. The “lathe grooves and hammer marks” are pressed in when they are shaped (sabian B8 are a perfect example). Pst5’s are probably machine lathed on a CNC lathe. The pst7’s are hard to tell...they may be done by hand but I doubt it with the low price tag. They sound superb though

Yes-if you can find a PST 5 THIN CRASH (they don't make them anymore), it's a GREAT crash. There were a bunch on Music Go Round about a year ago for like 65 apiece!

You know I just thought of something...I wonder if the newer PST 5's are lathed on the underside of the cymbal...the older ones didn't appear to have any lathing to speak of underneath. I started on Zildjians, went to 2002 Paiste and 505 Paiste china and now I use Sabians. 2002's are the best sounding line of cymbal I've ever played even the 2002 power ride, but I couldn't keep them from cracking :( so I had to switch. There was one 16inch Zildjian paper thin crash from the 70's my friend gave me that was....AAHHHHH....beautiful...but I cracked it :(.

That ringing pitch you are talking about is dead on. LOL In singing that sound you are talking about is called the singer's formant, and it resides between 2.8Khz and 3.4Khz. It enables singer to cut through the music. And it does the same thing for cymbals.

let me ask you one more time because I think you are confused. the pst7 thin 18" crash sounds great! how would it sound as a primary ride? I have the 20 pst7 light ride and its pretty heavy to me for my riding. it's a great big crash which I'm not looking for. thanks again

Man I'm looking at getting a full set of PST7s just don't know if I should go thin or medium the Heavies are just too heavy ,so I guess I'll go medium I'll probably get the set with the 16 in. Swiss .Anyway Hey to George 🤘✌

I'm just starting on drums. I bought 2002 20 inch power ride (a little keyhole) for $75 bucks. I'm thinking of buying the PST light set hats, 16 and 18 inch crash with a ride. I want to use the ride as a crash along with 18 inch crash, and using the 16 inch crash as a pie plate!

I actually prefer the sound of the pst 7 cymbal. But im not one who likes the long sustain or ring as you refer to it. I think the pst 7s are by far the best bargain value of any cymbals on the market from any company. You can get 14 inch hi-hats, a 16 inch crash, and a 20 inch ride in a set for only 397 dollars and they offer the sets in thin, medium, or heavy, whatever you prefer. Man no one else comes even close to that good of a sound for that low of price. There's a lot of guys that spend that much for just one cymbal but the quality of sound isn't that much better than the pst 7s. Love your videos Terry, they are helpful.

Great comparisons!... "Laving elves"..lol. brilliant. Would you recommend laving down on the PST5 20" medium "RIDE" to introduce a more tapered lave like a 2oo2? Do they suffer from the same thickness issues as the PST5 crashes? I rememeber the old phones with those bells and that after-ring sound, spot on. I think I've done the same thing "Would someone answer that damn phone!" Those new PST7's sound great! like the red lettering also, so they're Swiss made? Thanks for video and introducing the new line.

Yes-they're lathed in Switzerland in the fashion of the 2002s. I don't think they're widely available yet-go to a place and check them out if you can!
