Here is, for crash application purposes, a comparison of a Paiste 404 20" RIDE versus a couple different 20" Paiste 505 cymbals (1 CRASH and 2 MEDIUMs). I also realize from this video, I'm getting bizarrely tubby. I need to drop 25.

When I was 14 in 1983 and wanted the 2002s, my parents would only pay for the 404/505 series. I don't care how good these sound, the memories they trigger are just too painful.

Got a set of new 404's with my first kit in 1984 (14,16,20 ). Came with the 'heavy' 404 hi hats. Great sizzle on these hats. Later I got a pair of blue label 602's (I regretfully no longer have..) and my band mates (heavy metal band-lots of open hat playing.we were kids) actually preferred the 404's to the 602's. Always felt the 80's 505 line was almost the equal to the more expensive 2002's. Lot of the same characteristics.The 404 ride makes a great sounding dark crash! I loaned mine out to a pal and next time I seen it was a few years later in a local music store for sale!

I too began on and still have my 505 20” medium ride, 505 16” crash, 404 18” crash, and 404 14” Hihats. I think purchase was in 82’ or 83’, Drome Sound Albany NY. The ride is now on my kit. The others in the attic. They served me well. I love Paiste for their innovations like the pstx effects cymbals with holes, (which replaced my traditional crashes), but I do prefer b20 nowadays, especially for Hihats- though my Zild new beat top with a Paiste 3000 sound edge on bottom is killer. Thanks for the comparison. They sound great still.

Hi Terry, (you are a true inspiration.) a Question...from watching your channel , a boiling-down to: 20" BL 505 ride= towards GB _and_ 20" GL 505 ride= towards 2oo2? I have a "Heavy" BL 505 20" i assume ride, in the post!
@bonzoleum
@bonzoleum 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, d- if I understand correctly; Yes- the 505 shape is the original GB shape. But your BL 505 RIDE has lathing more like a 602 (404), yes? The GL 505 RIDE has lathing almost just like a 2002, but with GB shape. Also, a GL 20" 505 RIDE will be heavier than that BL one.

@@bonzoleum just arrived... sounds grreat ! Black Label w/all ink/Swiss/'81/2155g. dark patina (even into red territory), there are literally no marks, as i dent/ding/bend/bite on this thing aside from ancient fingerprints. best of all fits w/ my other stuff. 75 including postage. I'm really glad it's a heavy, it's gonna get beat. One thing will do is bring off 30-50% of the gunkina to reach some more high end. P.S. what's with Paiste fire-engine-red patina-ust? you ever seen it? This ride here has a red, not orange, sheen on the bottom on about a 1/4 of it. But i got a '82 Swiss 15" B8 Super Marching that almost looks like it was spray painted... not crusty either... it's beautiful actually.

I have a green label 505 20" ride. It only has "paiste 505" stamped into metal @ 6 o'clock position. All other markings are green silk screen. Do you date this to roughly 81/82 with no serial #? It is 2160 grams
@bonzoleum
@bonzoleum 11 ай бұрын
Yes. For whatever reason, there was a time (maybe until '83) on the 505s and 404s that there were no serial numbers stamped into them. The secondary lathing is tighter than on the '84-'86 ones also, btw.
