@@Skywolfhd20 The Switch isn't region locked so it should work just fine. My copy of Mario Odyssey is the European version and it works just fine. I'd imagine that as long as you play it on a North American Switch with a North American account it should automatically set itself to English. Even if it doesn't you can probably bumble your way into the options menu and change the language settings there.

Got bad news for you. Those localizers don't care. They know it could even unleash a literal diplomatic crisis or at least the end of their job as Japanese creators decide to skip the West entirely. They know it is counterproductive and harmful but they don't care because their ideology takes priority. How do I know? I'm a translator, and back in college I was constantly told one thing. Never alter anything. Localization is meant to make things functional regardless of region. If you alter content that's editing and censorship. That's not ethical and could cause trouble. I learned, from actual professionals, that localization is what was done, as much as possible, with Ōkami. What was done here is censorship and editing. Localizers don't care. They don't care about breaking all codes of ethics in the trade. They don't care about disrespecting authors ot cultures. They don't care about customers. They know what they're doing is wrong, and they do it anyway because of ulterior motives. Some even admitting, on social media, that they satisfy their failed writing careers by rewriting someone else's work entirely. And it is exactly because of people like that, unprofessional and disrespectful translators and localizers, that I decided to enter the trade and make translation into my career choice in college. My goal was entering entertainment and stop this from the inside, both as a creator and translator. A goal I realized was unattainable after noticing how bad things were. Because it was not just a problem between ES and EN translations as I used to think. It runs deeper than that and it is a bigger problem within Western localization of Asian IPs. Now I am an author and I see things differently. Now I see why some authors in Japan are considering cutting all overseas audiences as an option. They don't know their audience isn't the problem. All they know is these localizers disrespect them and tell them it is what we want. Something we don't want. These localizers are no different to the Interpreters who, prior to the Spanish colonies, fanned the flames of conflict between the Mexican natives and the Spaniards. Something I learned about in college too as an example of what a translator should never do. Pushing an agenda against the interests of both parties. This case is just one example of a long history of corruption in the trade.

You have to interpret on some level or otherwise it won't make sense, cause, newsflash, japanese and english are 2 entirely different languages. And stop spewing on about "ideology" and "censorship". I guess that's one of the reason why Japanese people don't trust foreign people too much. Intentionally or not, this isn't the first time Japanese culture was "butchered" and I am pretty sure that this isn't the last time either. Of course, the argument goes both ways and Westerners should be wary of how Japanese people treat Western stories and myths (except when it involves parodies, self-inducing jokes, using Western fantasy settings as medium, or taking it to eleven).

After watching this video, I think I have more respect for Japanese video game developers and manga writers. Now I really understand the core of why they make most of their characters blessed, no I'm not just referring to the women. It was something that while it never bothered me, unlike some other people in this day and age, I was always confused as to why the consistency of physically fit men and blessed women in manga, anime, and video games. The problem is that western localizers are more and more embracing the same mindset as SJWs and prefer to "clean" things up in order to "fix the problematic content". Im not going to drop names because I can't trust random people not to go and harass them, but there are plenty of localizer who make these changes willingly and go out of their way to do it. Then they brag on twitter about how they made the localized content better by removing any sense of sexiness, changing voice lines from a matter of personal opinion of the character to social justice commentary, etc. They are fully aware that they remove the context and significance of these things and thrive on it. And here im not saying that localization isn't important, it is to an extent, but localization should be used to either make the context easier to understand (such as switching an idiom with an other one that roughly means the same thing in the localized language) or to ease the consumer into the culture being portrayed. In my opinion, if someone decides to get distributing rights of foreign content, they should not do it with the intent of inserting their own view in the product. If you can't localize something without censoring it or changing its story and characters, then you should get into an other field of work, no one wants their favorite series or characters to be desecrated by someone with an agenda.

Also speaking of "Be careful what you change", the idea that Amaterasu saw Herself in the mirror and realized her value is... wrong. That is from a very, VERY modern reinterpretation of the tale, largely through western influence, in an attempt to make the sun goddess seem less fickle and jealous. Which is a HUGE part of her character. What she saw in the mirror? Well, the point of the merriment was that they were trying to pull a con. The cheering and merriment and partying was all in celebration of a New god ascended... at least, that's what they Said it was. The trick being that when they got Amaterasu to come outside, she'd see herself in the mirror and think it was the new god in question, and move to confront them. They even played to the idea that the replacement god was better and more powerful than she was. The whole event was a masterclass in manipulation, play to Amaterasu's unstoppable jealousy, unstoppable confrontational nature, and of course, unstoppable bi-icon Horny. Ain't no bonk stick in the cave. Anyway, with Amaterasu having left the cave to confront the "replacement" god in the mirror, she was sufficiently duped into nearly starting a fight with... herself. And of course, in the time it took for her to do this, the other gods quickly slammed the cave shut and sealed it behind her, so she couldn't run back INTO the cave when the jig was up. The whole "Seeing her own inner true beauty" is a VERY late rewrite, again, with a lot of western influence thrown in from when Japan was desperately trying to integrate with the imperialist expansionists of Europe. And yes, one could say that the rewrite is still old and culturally significant in its own way, but the reality is that the original writing tells us about the Language used as well as the Culture of the time in which it is written, so rewriting it and claiming the rewrite is the original canon sort of erases that entire period of history. So in much the same way as we should be wary of any Norse mythology that claims Loki's always been there(he only ever shows up VERY late in writings, and only once the Christians got involved, and never, EVERY appears in earlier stories), or of stories that claim Hades was always a part of Greek mythology(again, very, VERY late addition, seriously, Hades in mythology is far newer than Persephone, which herself Predates the Hellenistic greeks and everything they wrote, which, for those who know the story of Hades and Persephone, already is making your eye twitch), we should be wary of these late rewrites and how they obscure what history ACTUALLY is like. A story written is a time capsule, one that tells you about the language of the people who wrote it, the language of the audience they wrote it for, and the culture of both. Rewriting these stories for "modern sensibilities" erases those very, very important marks of history, especially if you then try and erase the existence of the existing story by claiming the new one was the "twue" one all along.

You forget the Hot Coffee Controversy, which actually resulted in the ESRB re-rating GTA: San Andreas with an Adults Only Rating until Rockstar went in and took out the partially finished sex scene (which the Hot Coffee mode merely enabled since it was in the game's code and Rockstar conviently didn't tell the ESRB "oh, by the way, there is this disabled sex scene mode in the game's data). People got upset about the matter because Rockstar effectively lied by omission to the ESRB.

I've found a big example of changing/ignoring the culture of a game that really annoys me. Castlevania So I was playing through Castlevania symphony of the night and admiring the wide array of monsters and demons from across folklore and mythology since it's a passion of mine. But some of the names were strange to me like Wargs, cave trolls and some of the items in game, they just felt off. Upon looking I can't help but become retroactively mad as many of the names were changed from folklore and mythology beings to references to Tolkien. The fenrir wolf becoming wargs, Chupacabra becoming the cave trolls and a fire based demon having it's name changed to an ice elf race. Even some of the smarter and not Tolkien ones were still made less sense than what they were named before. Like the crow demon malfus becoming Karasu which I can only assume was meant to be a reference to tengu but Malphus was already tied to crows and demons. Or Orlok becoming Orlox, why? Was it a spelling mistake? Orlok is a significant vampire of cinema being the birth of the sunlight death and due to being a rip off of Dracula his similar move set makes sense. Or the misspelling of Dullahan in to Dhuron. I love the game, but it's hard to not wince at it knowing how these monster's names were changed for little to no reason. And this wasn't even because they were inappropriate or something, but simply because the translator liked Tolkien and ignored the history, mythology and culture of these creatures.

I gotta knitpick something.... these sorts of edits in female appearance isn't a conservative point anymore in the modern era... it's being done across the board on any and all platforms basically rendering characters less feminine in a number of ways. Anything that would have been stereotypically "attractive" like hourglass figure, noticeable bust (note I am saying NOTICEABLE not "large"/"oversized"... simply able to be noticed), or whatever gets to the localization process and gets hit somehow to make such features les prevalent. Yes this was formerly a more 'conservative' point a few years back but the script got flipped sometime in the past decade around the time where Nintendo for some reason was allowed to be the only platform among the consoles to get remotely lewd and everyone else started adding in convenient censoring through sunbeam/lens-flare placement.

I understand your sentiment, and while I don't know why and to what extent this is being censored in the west, I will say that I believe it's possible in a case like this to alter a character design in a way that is both tasteful, and still celebrates the cultural relevance of her features. You can "cover her up" a bit more, yet still through clever and subtle writing pay tribute to her assets in a way adults will appreciate, even if younger audiences won't catch on as easily. And as long as you approach it honestly and respectfully, I don't think it necessarily hurts to make that kind of change.

Hearing this story made me think back to the game Okami. After Orochi was awakened and darkened the area, she was the one to awaken Amaterasu to save the world from orochi. Although, I remember how she was stuck at the tree and if it died, she would go with it. Does that tie in to the mythos or is that just something added by the game dev?

The issue with the west, and why the “cover up the female form”, can be boiled down to people being all “won’t SOMEONE think of the children”, with the idea that “oh, if a kid sees sexy female bits, then they will start getting inappropriate thoughts of reproduction before they are adults”. Which would be alright if the same country didn't also put sex everywhere. Sexy women in bikinis are all over the place. Americans are so uptight about sex, and because they're uptight about it they see it as naughty, taboo, forbidden. And then advertisers capitalize on that forbidden naughty thrill. And of course it leads into a kind of feedback loop. People who are uptight raise kids and keep sexy stuff from them, the kids grow up prudes who are just as uptight if not more and what baffles me is American parents don't seem to want to teach their kids about sex, but they don't want the schools teaching them either. I guess they just hope their kids will figure it out somehow and they'll never have to deal with the subject. It's a very confusing culture.

Whenever I see this situation in media (not necessarily the localization, but the booba in the first place), I always have to ask, "why the design choice?" Often, there is no reason. (Nami and Robin from One Piece, and several girls in MHA.) But every once in a while, there is a good, culture-based reason for it. This is a prime example.

I still don't get it, the modified artwork is still loose with just an extra layer of fabric you can still infer she still has Divide dandies , if her whole bazangers were that important then why wouldn't it be out and about in the japanese version? Personally, I think it's less of a conservative thing, and more like we have too many people in localization who can't even define what a woman is. That being said, I'm perfectly ok with the idea of a nice pair of boobas saving the world. I think I first heard of the story in an OVA called Key the Metal Idol. I recall a character in that show referring to Ame no Uzume as the goddess of showbiz.

It's like they compared the CERO and ESRB rating tiers instead of the actual ages. (they retired eC in 2018 as it wasn't used as often)

Great video! Honestly, I think both her covered and uncovered looks look good and it might have been more appropriate to the character if she were shown both ways both in the original and the localized version of the game. The goddess character isn't stripping nude all the time but only at specific desperate times to affect positive change. Perhaps she could be covered by default but then reveal more and more depending upon how desperate the situation gets or during certain scenes. To completely cut it out though like in the western localization I agree is a disservice to history/mythology.

Nnnah, I'd say you're very much playing the devil's advocate here: First of all, Susanoo being disregarded had most of all to do with the fact that he was the youngest child and thus had no claim to Takamagahara's throne. (And considering what a brat he was, he brought most scolding from both his parents and his siblings upon himself... I mean, he was basically a divine fratboy back in those days so, yeah, not really someone living up to his role and job as one of the top gods.) Secondly, you've _completely_ misunderstood the nature and conclusion of the challenge between him and Amaterasu: The challenge was, ostensibly, who could bring forth most gods. Amaterasu insisted that they should bring forth the gods using one of the other's items for this challenge, and Susanoo agreed to this: He gave Amaterasu his sword, Amaterasu gave him her necklace. From Amaterasu's necklace, Susanoo was able to bring forth five gods while Amaterasu was able to bring forth three goddesses from his sword. Susanoo thought (much like you, apparently) that he had won the contest because he had "created" more gods, but this actually just revealed his own lack of understanding of how the world works according to Shinto and what had just happened: Y'see, Shinto is animism, meaning that everything houses spirits. It's not that Susanoo and Amaterasu "created" five respectively three kami, it's that Amaterasu's necklace, simply by virtue of it belonging to her, had come to contain five kami that Susanoo was able to give separate existences outside of the necklace, while Susanoo's sword had only come to contain three kami for Amaterasu to bring into being. It's not that _Amaterasu_ said that she was more important than him, _the universe itself_ said that she was more important than him by way of how the things she wore came to house more kami than his belongings did... and, unlike Susanoo, Amaterasu understood this -- how the universe worked, how the creation of kami worked, and what her and Susanoo's places in the universe were... and then Susanoo, when he realized that he had actually lost, (and had contributed to his own defeat by demonstrating that Amaterasu's necklace contained more spirits than his sword did,) kinda just threw a tantrum... Amaterasu really is as innocent and pure and kind as she's made out to be... All that said, I personally prefer Susanoo... I mean, Amaterasu is practically Shinto's own Mary Sue. Susanoo, by contrast, has a story arc with character development, learning to stand up for and protect those who need protecting, acts of guile heroism, finding love and growing into a proper, mature and respectable man -- without fully losing his wild edge. He even makes peace with Amaterasu in a mature and symbolically significant way, once again giving her a sword, but this time not as part of a challenge to her authority, but as a gift to his sister and queen, as a way to beg her forgiveness, as proof of the growth he has gone through as a person, and as a token of his fealty.
