I caught up with BBC Africa Correspondent, Andrew Harding, to talk about his book These Are Not Gentle People which explores the killing of Simon Jubeba and Samuel Tjixa, who were assaulted by a group of about 40 white farmers in 2016 and later pronounced dead. It is a tale that reveals much about South Africa's tortured past, and its uncertain future.

There has to be a think tank in this country, which will deal with such cases and keep them alive but also review and challenge how justice is being practiced everyday. Whilst we wait for political parties to manage Marikana and Parys!

There is for example the Foundation for Human Rights which is active in this exact field of work. My impression is though that most South Africans are not aware or ignore these issues, unless some popular person like Sizwe brings them to their attention (thanks for the work you are doing!). For example: it seems as if almost no one took notice of the Ernest Dipale Inquest which was held 2 - 3 weeks ago, even though the inquest (just like the previous Ahmed Timol and Neil Aggett Inquests) is of utmost importance, since these are rare instances where the issue of Apartheid impunity are addressed and implicated persons subpoenaed to appear before a court and required to answer the questions of the victim's families! We can no longer tolerate racist perpetrators to be given the free pass, so many (basically all) Apartheid murderers and torturers never had to answer for their crimes and even continue to receive pensions to this very day!

I am horrified by the ineptitude, inefficiency, unprofessionalism and incompetence of the criminal justice system with specific reference to the autopsy and immediate crime scene investigation. People just don't care about doing good jobs. Andrew Harding points these shortfalls out with horrifying clarity.

@11:49 stress points in a country shows the underbelly. 2yrs later politicians still appear for political capital and sow human division using fear & hatred. 😢 Less & less of this system is 'working'.

The Mayor of Mogadishu: General Mohhamed Farrah Idid. A black man who beat the best U.S military special forces who had helicopters, tanks and other military armaments using only a militia.

Ku tense! Andrew know his position in this story and he knew how to position the black families without emotionally offending the Afrikaners. Crime is crime but there's something he missed about this country when it comes to race. I also understand that the law esp in Free State is afraid of Afrikaners and they know as well, that nothing will happen to them. I'm offended Sizwe kakhulu on Andrew's naivety in the South Africa context, he gets away with a book that he gets to sell and profit. The loser here is the black families just like in Marikana. Everyone gets to take something from the black families and they will be awarded for but ya!

They family have gotten justice though, it has taken a long time but the men were found guilty, so it’s not at all like Marikana. I think he’s done a good job at covering a story that had been forgotten.
