Gaza: Cruel Zionism, Past and Present with Professor Avi Shlaim

Today, we are confronting nothing short of a campaign of ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians of Gaza, not seen since the Nakba or Catastrophe of 1948. Yet many in the Western world are silent about the suffering. Much of what justifies Israel and its actions in the West is premised on history, and many European and American historians have been ready to present a compelling argument for Zionism and the case for Israel in the heart of the Middle East.
This historical justification, based on persecution and antisemitism, gives the story of Israel a potency that has for many years served to find acceptance in the West - of impunity to act without restraint - that is not offered to any other state. At the same time, the Palestinian story has been undermined by these same historians. They were a Bedouin community, readily able to vacate their land - it is said. Palestinians, according to leading Israeli politicians, are a mythical people.
Today, we are honoured to have Professor Avi Shlaim with us to untangle historical facts from fiction. Avi Shlaim is an eminent historian. He is an Emeritus Professor of International Relations at Oxford University and the author of The Iron Wall: Israel and the Arab World (2014) and Israel and Palestine: Reappraisals, Revisions, Refutations (2009). Professor Shlaim is a dual Israeli British citizen who lived in the country as a child. His family originated from Iraq and migrated to the newly founded state in 1950.

@@user-jv4zb6zu7wI think first we have to clarifiy that the ISIS was a made up pseudo islamic group supported and founded by a lot of actors who had all their own interests (Iran, USA, Israel, Turkey, Gulf States, and various war lords of extremist Islamic groups), the reason why most of their soldiers if not all were misguided muslims and did not act upon islamic rules, that started during a period of turbulences and chaos inside the arabic politics. People joined them because of various reasons, but the goal of this group was to start chaos and restructure the region because of interests (oil, gas, military bases, etc.), they did work with a lot of nations like Turkey, Israel, USA, Iran etc. That is why you see a lot of countries in the aftermath being split up between Russia and USA (e.g., Syria) or Turkey and Iran and USA (e.g., Iraq). Now to your second point about Gaza, a lot of the muslim population would want to go and fight in Gaza, but the problem is no resistance is supported by ruling nations. Here, the nations don‘t want any fights and everyone just talks the talks, because nobody has interests there beside the palestinians and the israelis.

@@fan2hd277 Let’s leave Fox News alone. OK. I’ll be specific. As a “historian”, he stated how good were relationships between Arabs and Jews, but did not say a word about Farhud. Google it . Hundred Jews were murdered in Baghdad ( it is Iraq). Avi Shlaim himself from Baghdad originally. It happened before the establishment of Israel. Only this fact alone disqualifies him from being a historian. But I will continue: describing flight of Arabs from Palestine in 1947-48 he uses the word “expulsion” ( btw, only small portion of Arabs were really driven out - it is a well known fact), but when he is talking about Jews flight from Iraq and other Arab countries, he uses the word “migration”. So, by his “historical” opinion, hundreds of thousands Jews in Arab countries almost simultaneously suddenly discovered a burning desire to “migrate” in the same direction, leaving all properties they had behind… Strange phenomena… What it could be??? So, he is a liar, or half-truths teller, which is tantamount to lying. I can go on and on dispelling his lies and distortions but it will take the whole article to write. For me, as a person who is studying Middle East history and conflicts for more than 20 years it is enough. Hopefully, you have learnt something….

I just want to thank you brother Muhammad Jalal for your work. May Allah continue to raise and guide you and us through your work. It is always an honor for me to listen to Prof. Avi Shlaim's wisdom on the history of the conflict. I pray for peace in Palestine and that this conflict is eventually resolved without either side transgressing. I normally enjoy reading (good) comments, rather than expressing my own thoughts. But for this one, I felt like I had to say something. I am an Iraqi by blood. My father left Iraq sometime during the Iraq-Iran war. Since then, Iraq has gotten worse and worse; even today, most Iraqis outside hold the opinion that it is a shadow of its former self. My father still reminisces about the Iraq of once-upon-a-time, when children of diverse religions or beliefs used to go play around the priest, the imam, and the rabbi, and receive blessings from all of them. My father named me Bilal, despite the dismay of some family members. Mainly because the name "Bilal" wasn't common in Iraq- or at least in my family- and was seen as more on the non-Arab side. My father named me Bilal, after Bilal Ibn Rabah (Radiya-Allahu Anh) out of his hatred of divide, especially his hatred of Arab nationalism (or Al-Uruba in general). Like many other Iraqis, my father lived the divide of Iraq and witnessed the emergence of transgressing political parties one worse than the other. The hatred planted over the decades into the people of Iraq for each other didn't help either. Eventually, he had no choice but to leave. My father always tells me that the worst thing that happened to the middle east was the rise of nationalism. It was the piece of the puzzle that allowed nefarious outsiders to do what they did. I didn't use to think much of it. But the more I grow up, the more I can see exactly what he meant. The Jews of Iraq were the pride of Iraq. Many of their established families- their names are still referenced today. They contributed to Iraq for millennia, they were Iraqi. And one of the biggest losses for the land of Iraq was losing its Jewish population. I hope one day, the Muslim ummah will unite again and undo the wrongs that have been done in this past era, both by those transgressing towards extremism and those transgressing towards corruption... Not under nationalism or tribalism, but under the taqwa and justice of the early Islamic caliphates.

To the question of whether the Jewish community could have survived in the post Ottoman era? To be honest am not sure if the other religions in muslim worlds have the same rights as the muslims may have in many of the western secular countries.
