Edmund Morris's three volume biography of Theodore Roosevelt is one of the best things I've ever read. A life like an adventure novel.

I saw The Replacements on an insane night back in the early 1980s. They played at a place in Lincoln, Nebraska that was a chicken restaurant by day and rock and roll palace by night. Every indie/punk/alternative band played at this place. The band was drunk, of course. As I remember it, which is admittedly foggy, none of the band members played their respective instruments for much of the show. They were loud, crude and everything sounded out of tune. In other words, it was great. Ah, the good old days.

I love your book reports. I, too, am an avid reader. I aspire to write, but I don't think I'd be very good at it. My time seems to get filled up with other things. Thanks Steve.

FYI, WMMS was the radio station that launched the 40 year career of the Canadian trio Rush. DJ Donna Halper was sent a copy of their self-funded first album, RUSH (which they released in 1974 on the label they created, Moon Records) buy a guy at a record label that had received the album but weren't interersted in them. The last song in the album, Working Man, was pretty good and was just over 7 minutes long, giving the DJ's time for a bathroom break. When they first played Working Man they started getting calls from listeners asking when the new Led Zeppelin album was coming out. Lots of airplay got them their first record deal with Mercury Records.

The best WW2 book has to be "Hitler, My Part In His Downfall" by Spike Milligan.

Interesting list. Maybe the radio station is why Huey Lewis wrote The Heart of Rock and Roll. Steve you should read From Paris to New York by Land by Harry De Windt in or around 1903. There was an interest at the time of building a rail line from Paris to New York.

A couple of other book suggestions, in case you haven't already read them... "The Yard: Building a Destroyer at the Bath Iron Works" by Michael S. Sanders Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer , Randy Rackliff, et al. Been quite a few years since I read them, but both are very well done.

I was a big Titanic fan growing up. I read Walter Lord’s, A Night to Remember in 6th grade. Great book. Also, fascinated by economics. The Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations is one of my favorite books. I studied it in College, and still keep a copy in my iBooks, from Project Gutenberg. I’ve convinced myself that no one really understands modern economics. Especially these “innovative” derivatives. Former Fed Chair, Paul Volker once quipped, sometime in the 1990s I’d guess, that, “the last useful financial innovation was the ATM”. Even then, I remember economics being called, The Dismal Science, due to its inexactness. If you lined up all the economists in the world, end to end, it still wouldn’t reach to a conclusion …. :-)

Another interesting book is The Discovery and Conquest Of Mexico. A first persons documentation. Written by Bernal Diaz del Castillo. As per the perspective and times, it’s slanted. Parts of it are truly disturbing. I’d like to read a Mexican response to this tome.

I mentioned it on a Sunday live show, but In the Land of White Death by Valerian Albanov is an excellent true story. The story of the book itself is kind of fascinating as well.

Try the book "Hiroshima: Bridge to Forgiveness." I only got to Page 80. The culture of the Japanese Is nothing like I thought and I had to put it down. It is about what a young boy goes through after "The Bomb: was dropped. It is not what you think.

I guess it's a good time to say I finally started reading your Murder House book. About halfway through and it's a good book to read if you need to kill about ten minutes at a time. I'm surprised you didn't do one on John Wayne Gacy but maybe I haven't gotten that far. Or did he kill his victims in his house? Or what about BTK? I did like the history of the first home mentioned. Yeah, probably no murders happened there but why let that get in the way of a good story to tell tourists, right? LOL

I’m not into reading books but when you mention Titanic, which I’m interested, did you know Titanic had three propellers two other ones had it on engines and the leftover steam from. Both outside engines would Send leftover steam to the middle engine to drive the middle propeller than you mention General Romo, which I’m a big fan of World War II turns out I had a nice time. Listen to your books report thanks.
