Just in case anyone is confused what Jinora did: What she did was what Unalaq and Iroh taught Korra; to find the light in the dark. Remember when Iroh told Korra that if she lets out her inner light, she'll illuminate the world around her and then she used her own light to find the light inside dark spirits? That's exactly what Jinora did here. She used her own inner light to illuminate the darkness. Thus finding the light (Raava) in the dark (Vaatu).

Agreed. It sucks at first but Korra having access to the previous Avatars would have really undercut the narrative of season 3 and ESPECIALLY 4. The writers knew what they were doing. It was necessary from a story perspective.

I don't think it's necessarily the getting advice part (in ATLAs finale the past avatars seemed to deliberately stop short of actually telling Aang what to do). I suspect it's more they gave the avatar an extremely OP ability (removing someone's bending) that makes every fight against an antagonist need to justify why Korra doesn't just remove their bending as soon as she's winning.
@RunningTogether

I think getting rid of the link to the old avatars was a good idea, because the link was a crutch that was too easy to use as a deus ex machina to get the avatar out of any threat. And when the avatar didn’t use it, it would be confusing as to why they didn’t. They didn’t destroy the spirits of Aang and the others, they just broke the connection. Just as Tenzin was able to talk to Aang in the spirit world, Korra may be able to speak to him in the right circumstances, it’s just no longer available on demand. Future avatars will be able to contact Korra, but because there are fewer avatars linked together for the foreseeable future, it shouldn’t be quite as OP, so threats that the avatar has to face can still be more threatening. Great reaction! Looking forward to the rest.

yes i tell others this as well. Just to let you know its ex machina not deus ex machina as that is an intervention of god the other is just a macguffin to that gets you out of trouble. That is a small thing most people get confused on hope it helps.

THANK YOU exactly what i thought as well. alot of friends i have talk trash about korra bc of her severed link to the past avatars and i always say the same thing. the avatar state was a crutch. PLUS how did the link not get severed when aang died, then revived by the spirit water at the end of book 2? he could've lost it just as easily, if not MORE easily than how korra lost it.

Honestly I really like that she doesn't have the connection, because she can't use it as a crutch and people can't be like "Well why can't she just ask so-and-so what to do" It allows her to have to be creative and come up with her own solutions, especially with the world mostly working in harmony now, but a lot of the avatars are going to have somewhat outdated looks on life and may not be able to give the best advice going forward. You know kind of like a out with the old in with the new.

I’ve chewed on this season, and Avatar as a whole for many years. Reading more and more philosophy along the way. My thoughts aren’t fully fleshed out yet, and I need more time to form a cohesive argument. But so far this is what I’ve come to think about Korra, and this season in particular. In my opinion, Korra’s biggest question they are trying to answer is: How do you follow your path in a modern world, if your role is a traditional job? Modernism vs Traditionalism seems to be one of the main focuses of the series. Constantly throughout the first two seasons, we see this explored quietly in the background. Lighting bending, which use to be this magical form that only a few knew is now common place, and used to power electricity. Cars, airplanes, and technology to fight benders are quickly starting to outclass and upset the social hierarchy. Benders use to be on top, and more and more they are relegated to more mundane tasks. We see this more explicitly when Korra and Tenzin argue in season one: “This is what I need to be learning, modern styles of fighting.” Tenzin, the Traditionalist, wants to imprint his culture and way of life on Korra, to keep it alive; while Korra wants to thrust herself into the modern era. Korra is now constantly asking herself “What is my role in a world that is leaving me behind, and doesn’t need me?” Which I think makes the ending of season 2 even more beautiful. Because she didn’t make the choice to get rid of the cycle. It was ripped from her. So that begs a new question. “How do I move forward, if my culture was ripped from me unwillingly? Am I strong enough to rebuild the old way? Am I worthy of carrying this mantel?”

"In the era before the Avatars, we bent not the elements but the energy within ourselves" - Lion Turtle to Aang I believe this was what the Lion Turtle was talking about except in Korra's case, it was a bit more extreme because of Harmonic Convergence. How I saw it was that she basically tapped into the cosmic energies of the universe and was able to bend her own energy in order to project her own spirit out onto the physical plane. I believe this was possible because it happened during Harmonic Convergence as all the spiritual energy of the world is amplified. For the Jinora thing, someone already mentioned it but she basically helped to shine "a light in the dark" for Korra so she could see where Raava was already regrowing within Unavaatu. The OST for that entire moment is called "Jinora's Light", which was honestly majestic as hell! Overall, it definitely could've been explained a lot better lol, so I understand if people didn't exactly like this finale or were even confused by it. And so the cycle of Wan has ended, and Korra's has begun! Bring on S3! Do the thing!!

The point of the "avatar" isn't that you reincarnate. Everyone does in the Avatar universe. Friendships transcend lifetimes. The "avatar" thing is that their spirit is bonded with Raava, making it possible to actually know who your ancestors were since everyone knows who the avatars were. What's gone now is the ability to communicate with the past avatars but she's still the avatar if she has Raava bonded with her and all her future incarnations
@SI4Y

to be honest, kiyoshi met yangchen in the SPIRIRT world and cried into yangchens arms thinking she was her mother. So to be honest, the avatar can communicate with the past lives but they need to enter the spirit world which would be time consuming.

So about Vatuu - the creators confirmed that he receeded within Raava. Therefore, he's in Korra and every next Avatar. They were considering him causing trouble but decided he's too weak for this, so this is it about Vaatu for now. They also said: "check in with anyone who's the Avatar in the next 10k years, and we're sure Vaatu will be causing them trouble". So it's safe to assume that the Avatar before the next Harmonic Convergence will be kind of half Avatar and half Dark Avatar, and the cycle will probably reset again if not end for good this time

As a result Vaatu become bigger/more powerful Edit: With Korra starting the Avatar cycle anew, i like to think of her as the Last Avatar of the First Cycle and the First Avatar of the Second Cycle. Also, the Avatar cycle starting anew is something that people theorize was meant to happen.

As far as past avatars. Losing that connection was predicted in the 3rd episode of ATLA. In the air temple, there was room for 2 more statues, one for aand, and one for korra. Times have changed. A new Era had to start after harmonic convergence. Raava IS the avatar spirit. Korra will never lose that. But she had to let go of her past lives in order to start fresh. Another 10,000 years of peace and valance.

i’m sure others have cleared things up for you by now- but, giant korra was just korra spirit bending her own energy. raava would have normally taken longer to reform and escape vaatu, but jinora brought her back with her spiritual light. if raava and korra hadn’t refused, korra would still have reincarnations, but they would not have the avatar powers because raava holds the 4 elements. because they refused, the 4 elements and avatar state will be passed down along w korra’s line. so future avatars will be able to reach korra but she will be the “first” which i like because its unique. we can go back in new shows to explore kyoshi or other past avatars’ stories, and they will all have past life access. its unlikely they would go any further than one more avatar down the line because they would have to be predicting future technology after that. so its really only korra and the next avatar that we would see not have access to past past avatars. ((and let’s be real, while it was a cool feature the past life avatars didn’t /actually/ have much screen time)) my gripes with this season mainly boil down to pacing, though. that was the same critique i had for season 1.

I really enjoyed this more than book 1. This stood more on its own while book 1 was still trying to show us this was still Avatar. The finale was great and I like that they got rid of her connection to the previous Avatars. You really don't see big changes like that that actually stick in franchises like this. And Korra will continue to make big changes to the mythos of that world.

If you guys are interested in the comics or books, there’s a book written as Korra for the next avatar. It’s interesting. But it’s a new cycle. Korra is the first avatar for the second era. To be honest, if you think about it, the past lives were very unnecessary in the first place. this is evident when aang goes to Kiyoshi, roku, Yangchen and kuruk for help when he said what he should do and they all told him to kill Ozai. But he made his own decision which is important which as meesh said a message of forging your own path Roku only gave the story of how the war started and we also see aang giving korra visions in season 1 about yakone. thats all the past avatar is good for tbh.

I think the writers were trying to convey to us that every 10,000 years the cycle will always reset (as long as no one dies during the avatar state). Remember, during harmoganic Convergence is when Raava and Vaatu will battle to determine the fate of the world. Yes, losing the connections to the past lives can be viewed as a big nerf for the avatar, but how useful would the wisdom and advice be for Korra's world? Aang struggled with the avatars giving advice on ending a war. I do not think the avatars would benefit in a changing world of technological advancement, spirits living in the spirit world, metal-bending being a common sub bending skill, and Republic City (social and diverse problems where nations were separate before the 100 year war).
@FatLittleButterfly
@FatLittleButterfly 3 ай бұрын
Getting rid of the connection is a bold move and necessary for the future, because we are moving on with Korras journey and not looking to the past. Ravaa and Vatuu had always been described as light and dark, not good and evil. We only labelled vatuu as evil because we wont survived in darkness. Its a self serving idea lol.

I think the one thing I’d change is Unalaq’s emphasis on the necessity of the spirit and physical worlds being together. Korra obviously takes a big lesson from Unalaq that segregation of the human and spirit worlds is part of what leaves the world unbalanced, she also learns so much from him about communing with the spirits and understanding their nature. I think leaning into the nuance so much more would’ve helped the season greatly. Rather than embrace Vaatu as the spirit of darkness embrace him as chaos and Raava as order. There’s so much to be said about how the natural state of the universe (entropy in physics and chemistry) is disorder and fluidity. Unalaq’s desire to use Vaatu to become an avatar that shows greater respect for spirits as a final motivation is obviously there but honestly so poorly realized because they cage themselves in by having Raava be good and Vaatu be bad.
@vgfunman
@vgfunman 5 ай бұрын
Unalaq motivation is always there. He might be a simple character but the idea behind him is spirituality at the cost of humanity. You can argue that they should have focused on the loss of his humanity more (betraying his brother, no care for his son, etc) but the idea of his character as an extreme that parallels Wan's decision and has Korra meet at the middle is great. Sometimes simple is better.
@dreferre21
@dreferre21 5 ай бұрын
@@vgfunman idk I have to disagree on that framing. Wan’s decision isn’t particularly an extreme, it’s a very plausible solution for the era he’s living in and it’s never presented to us narratively as an extreme, just as a mistake. An emphasis on Unalaq’s loss of would have been nice but even then the fundamental issue remains that narratively the storytelling on why he wants what he wants is lost. Obviously we can extrapolate he has a desire to reconnect humans and spirits but it’s tainted by the whole “dark avatar” thing which is why I said the focus on raava as good vaatu as bad diminishes the impact. Especially considering bc it goes against eastern philosophy it’s pulling from. A more structured narrative would have Unalaq learn the story of Wan from the spirit world, bring it to the red lotus and then eventually have him break off from them, search for vaatu’s prison, learn that he can enter the spirit world physically, learn from vaatu that the world is imbalanced as it is and that the oppression of spirits by humans has been a net negative for the world, Unalaq having his innate connection to the spirits will take that with him to heart, he has a realization that it is Wan that made the mistake and he decides to fuse with vaatu to create an avatar that is respectful and understanding of the spirits and sympathetic to vaatu’s ideals. From there we get the same outcome for the season, but there’s greater nuance, greater development from Unalaq and a more cohesive story.

Yeah, when Unalaq destroyed Ravaa, it destroyed whatever knowledge and connection Ravaa had with past Avatars ever since the fusion. But because Ravaa held all the elements before fusion, she was able to reincarnate with those abilities and her own memory as a spirit of light. The connection to any other fusion has been severed though. So Korra is the new millennia’s first Avatar. Luckily, she at least had knowledge of the first Avatar and how he came to be as well as very minor details about Roku and Aang since she is still living during an era where that info is still relevant.

Unalaq wrecked the Akashic Records from Korra but in that process he allowed to Vaatu been purified by the spirit energy manipulation. We don't know if the next avatar would have his past memories or if is possible to restore the connection by another powerful ancient spirit like the Mother of Faces from the comics.

There is a theory that the next Avatar after Korra will be the last. If you remember the room that has all the Avatar statues, they are displayed in a spiral, with only like two more spots after Aang. Sort of like the cycle is meant to be over after the next Earth Avatar. And remember, the next Avatar will live in a world pretty much like ours, maybe 100 years after Korra. Would the world really need an Avatar during our times? We'll see ❤

I know yall didn't forget about THE villain of ATLA: Azula!!!! 😂 Azula was ICONIC and such a perfect villain, everyone else was secondary including Firelord Ozai. I mean yeah he was the big tough final boss fight, but it was Azula making the real moves all throughout books 2 and 3. Personally I put her above all Korra's villains except maybe on par with Amon for his interesting backstory.

whatttttt azula above zaheer and literally unavaatu is crazy.
@StillOnTrack

@@HERQuietude I'm not talking about sheer power like a VS battle or something. I'm talking about character development, depth, motivation, backstory, further story, plans/schemes, actions. All the other villains were cool, but they didn't have the depth of Azula by a long shot. They were single season villains who served their purpose and then were gone. Azula was there for the majority of ATLA and made a huge impact and made most of the important moves we got to know her so much better. So yes, Azula above Zaheer above Unavaatu (who was so one-dimensional it was frankly cringe)

Theres a theory that korra was supposed to lose her past lives and start a new cycle. A lot of people say that because harmonic convergence is every 10k years, so its like a reset of the cycle, and the statues in ATLA when aang sees then in the 2nd episode theres 2 spots left, for aang and korra. I think it was suspected that she wouldnt become a new avatar at all because of how strong vatuu is compared to ravaa. Thats just a theory and i added my own to it a bit. If it doesnt make sense to anyone thats okay, it did to me.

19:10 I have a question regarding that, since Raava gets reborn in a new human every time her physical body dies, and there will always have to be darkness to balance raava. Do you guys think there'll be a new character to be born with Vaatu spirit, and with Unalaq as their past life? Because un the end the only difference between Wan becoming the avatar and Unalaq is the fact he has 4 elements instead of just one...

Though it is awful that Korra lost her connection with the previous Avatars.. I heard a rumor that the next Avatar animated series focusing on the Earth Kingdom-born Avatar will restore connections with his or her past lives, Korra included. I’d take it with a grain of salt but I personally hope that’ll be true.

I think the creators summarized their hopes for Korra and the following avatars with the speech she gave for the water tribes. But I think they could’ve had the destruction of vaatu lead to the sealing of all her past lives and then have the next avatars try to reconnect slowly to build the cycle backwards 🤷🏽‍♂️ and eventually they would lead to the next harmonic convergence 10,000 years later. That way we get new avatars and past ones.

It is shocking to loose the past connection, but it is a super over powered buff. I also think it adds value in the fact that consequences stick, so in that way I support it. Regarding reincarnation, presumably no one else gets to maintain their connection and I would be horrified to stay immortal but alone, so I take this as putting the last avatars to a final rest. Joing Sokka and the rest. Something to consider, all the past avatars always try to fix the last avatars past unfinished business and regrets. Sang resolved the hundred year war. Korra handled Yakone... its possible the next Avatar will resolve the lost connection.

I really like the story beats in season 2, but I think the season suffers a lot from the pacing. Throw in the super divisive finale and I get why people don't like season 2. But it was important for Korra to understand who SHE is and have a clear vision of her mission as the Avatar. Also, I'm hoping future Avatar stories involve Vaatu slowly growing inside the Avatar with each incarnation.

Sorry to burst your bubble but a canon book was published back in 2019 called The Legend of Korra: An Avatar's Chronicle explained all about Korra's future events and the whole connections with the past Avatars. If you are planning to dive deeper into the lore, THIS IS A LIGHT SPOILER... According to the book, Korra said that she didn't just lost the connection to her past life, but THE AVATAR themselves lost their abilities to connect with any past Avatars even for the future Avatars. Meaning to say, even the next Avatar will not be able to connect with Korra's spirit and the next Avatar after him will not be able to connect with him and Korra either, and so on. That is the reason why she made the Avatar's Chronicle where she wrote all of her journey, experiences and learning so that the next Avatar will be able to see a glimpse of how her past life came to be and learn from through readings. I think, this is also why people don't like this season is because this is the season where the show booked ended Aang's story. I always like the idea about Aang telling Tenzin that he is not a reflection of him and he should be who he is. There is an interesting shot of that where Aang is looking straight at the audiences like breaking the 4th wall, as if telling the viewers, subliminally, to move on and see this show the way it is and not the way The Last Airbender-like it should be. This season wasn't as bad as others made it out to be after a few re-watch. I think Unalaq is an evil-mustache-twirling villain like Firelord Ozai, it's even interesting how twice now the big bad comes from the Water Tribes now and the Fire Nation is in their most peaceful era. How the Southern Tribe progressed so much after the 100 year war. Varrick and Zhou Li were a very interesting duo, and many more. There are a lot to love about this season not just the parts about Avatar Wan, if you just give it a chance...I'm not a season 2 apologist, I just think it's not fair how the fans look at this season with such disdain. It has this reputation that ruins the experience for first time watchers, especially those reluctant watchers. To be honest, It probably wasn't as good as other seasons but it was never a bad series to a point that it's unwatchable and quit-worthy...

Wait, that makes no sense though...I get not being able to connect with the past Avatars starting with Aang and onwards, but Korra onwards should be able to connect with Korra. She re-fused with Raava, it should be fine?? It's why some people were basically saying it's the end of Wan's cycle and the start of Korra's.

Was that actually confirmed tho?? I havent read the book, so i could be wrong, but ive heard that Korra just... doesnt know if her next incarnations would be able to connect to her or so on, so she wrote stuff down just in case.... Ive never seen anywhere state it as fact that she or any future Avatars wouldn't be able to connect to the past ones(Korra onward)

As much as people talk about not liking S2, compared to S3 & 4. You don’t get a lot of what happens in S3 & 4 without the events that S2 built for them. As far as losing the connection with the previous Avatars. I suspect it’s about raising the stakes. Sort of how Dumbledor was killed before the final HP book. The safety net the hero always depended upon was now gone. Forcing the hero to perform without that assistance. I enjoy that major events have long term consequences. It’s why I got tired of mainstream comics. Big events would happen but be totally undone by the next writing staff.

My problem with season 2 was that it felt like they were playing up the Kid Show elements a lot more here, whereas ATLA basically was great because it defied the Kid Show genre. LoK s2 felt like all the characters were being extra stupid. Bolin, Korra, Unalak, the President, it all just felt like it was intentionally written with less brain cells. Even the Avatar Wan backstory felt overly simplified somehow. I enjoyed seasons 3 and 4 but I think season 1 will always be my favorite.

Reasons Book 2 gets so much hate, in no particular order: 1. Love triangle 2. Unalaq is a lame, ordinary, boring, megalomaniacal villain. Despite the impressive kaiju finish, he was just a bad villain. 3. Sub-par animation in the first half. 4. Wan's story, awesome as it is (I really love it), retcons how bending was given to people. From ATLA, the original benders were the dragons, sky bison, badger moles, and the moon, NOT lion-turtles. The only reason this is disliked is because it conflicts with established ATLA lore, not because the story is bad. It can be reconciled in part, as they do show Wan learning from the dragons, so by extension, it could be assumed that he mastered the other forms by training with badger moles and sky bison, but it's a pretty big stretch. Also, the moon wasn't a teacher; it was just imitated by people somehow. 5. The severing of Korra's connection with the past Avatars. WHY??!? It wasn't necessary, IMO, but theories hold that the writers wanted to free themselves, the world, and Korra from the past and begin a new era. I dunno 'bout that one. Why separate from such a powerful and beautiful mechanic that was so well-implemented to begin with? I can see both sides of it, but man was it disappointing to see that happen "live" on air! BOOK 3 GOIN' OFF!!! WOOO!

But I hate even more that so many misogynist fans are like “omg I hate Korra she ended the cycle and this and that” like no, her punk ass Uncle did that to her. I don't think a lot of fans understand what happened in this episode. These fans make it seem like Aang and the other past Avatars were destroyed, and that's definitely not the case. They still exist but Korra cannot easily make contact the way she was able to before.

Thanks for continuing with the Korra series. The fanbase is definitely split on this season, at least from conversations I have had with friends who are on both sides. I personally enjoyed this season, just not as much as 3 or 4 (so excited for your reactions for those). The lore/history building with Avatar Wan and the origin of this cycle's first Avatar was great and definitely saved it for me, as with many others from what it sounds like. I am no expert on Avatar lore, but I see the events from this season as establishing a natural cycle between light and dark. Raava and Vaatu kept talking about always being in contest with each other in periods of 10000 years, over and over. Maybe this is how the cycle will be now that there is an Avatar figure mixed into their eternal struggle. Since this is the first 10000 years since Wan became the first Avatar, nobody was expecting things to get as crazy as it did. This though would be making Korra the last Avatar of the first cycle, and first Avatar of the second. That's just my random thoughts on it. I'm sure there are others who are much more knowledgeable about Avatar lore than me, that can explain it :) Keep up the great reactions!

Harmonic Convergence amplifies all the spirits and spiritual energy just like the comit did to the fire benders and full moon to water benders. People with strong spiritual connections like Jinora and Korra (don't fully agree with Korra) got a boost too. This is the explanation for how they were able to do what they did in this episode....
