For real so much fanficition has such an impeccable balance between plot and romance. Here I am reading about these characters getting down and dirty or confessing their innermost emotions to each other but those heightened emotions and connection serve to inform the characters action in the midst of the wider plot, and genuinely enthralling court intrigue or social upheaval or mystery. And bestselling published authors can’t even get that balance correctly.

i do feel like with fanfiction (and as a fanfic author of a semi-popular fic in my fandom) you do have the benefit of (if posting chapter by chapter) to have reader feedback - of what works and what doesn't, and bring up things you wouldn't have considered, and so you can plan and adjust accordingly for your next chapters so that it is more developed. Yes book authors have editors and stuff, but you can have potentially hundreds to thousands of readers reading your WIP fanfic and giving you helpful feedback one chapter at a time.

@@CosimasNiehaus completely fair, and I will add that they start off with great source material too. But my problem comes with trad authors who are unable to write to any degree and can't tell a story in a way to keep you engaged

Im late to this video, and although I've watched previous videos of yours this one made me subscribe. I have a lot of book pet peeves that are petty and absolutely will make me DNF too. I never see anyone else being honest about petty DNFs, so I appreciate not feeling alone in my pettiness 😅
