My biggest gripe is moreso the fact that people are saying the book is "fun." But idk, it's not fun for me when there's nothing pulling the plot along and it always just feels like events happen at random. The chapters don't pull me from one to the next, making want to keep reading so I can find out more. It's also just sooooo predictable. Maybe that was why I didn't find it fun. I liked that it had lots of action in the first and final act, but that middle saaaaaaaaaaaagged.

Just saw this. I understand it's hard to write fantasy and good romances so I was curious how it was combined. Even more so because the author is from a military family and litteraly could have asked anyone if her military makes sense but nope. This isn't either a good romance nor good fantasy nor makes the military stuff sense. Fragile bookish girly gets into military death akademie with built in enemies out for her blood. And not because girly always wanted to fly, or because her disability won't matter if she sits on a dragon but because General Mommy makes her go. The book has more plot holes than a Swiss cheese. I could forgive if it was a childrens book, but it isn't. How would I save it? First of all little Violence always dreamt of flying. If she just could bond with a dragon her weakness wouldn't matter. Sitting on a Dagon (In a saddle! There is a reason knights used a saddle and war elephants had platforms. And concept drawings of dragon saddles exist since the eighty... ) using her bond powers she too could be a warrior. But her talents were scouted for the libraries and General Mom and her sister are absolutely against it. Why? Because the king decided to get rid of the older rebell children this year and this year is reserved for them and will be especially deadly and the classes are set to not teach them how to survive. Of course it's not supposed to be that obvious so a few children of important persons are drafted by lottery and a hand full of commoners are thrown in. It's disgusted as their big chance. V is furious when she learns her name wasn't even in the pot. Adding heartache to injured teenage ego her crush Dan gets to go. So V sneaks in. As soon as she passes the parathing she is part of the wing. Mommy is horrified. But it's to late and V needs to form alliances and turn enemies into friends. Now it's ride or die! 😂 That should patch up a lot.

I'll admit, I almost fell for the hype with Fourth Wing. It kept popping up almost everywhere I went, whether it was online or at the store, to the point where I went "Okay, fine! You've tempted me enough, I'm picking you up!" And I admit, I enjoyed the book for a while, probably because I wasn't looking too deep into it. Even the questionable dialogue (for example, the "Holy F**king Hot!" line) got some big laughs out of me. Sometimes you can enjoy something dumb by just going along and finding humor in it. Eventually though, the book started to drag, the details blurring together, and the stupidity reaching an all-time high. I started wondering "If the country is so desperate for more soldiers for the war, then why keep killing off potential recruits who can be used for different regiments besides dragon riding?", and from there the problems kept mounting up, which eventually led to me DNFing Fourth Wing and giving it away (I stopped at around the deadly obstacle course was completed, shortly after someone died attempting it). Going by everything I looked up about book, and its sequel Iron Flame, I think I made the right choice. Its sad cause I think the premise had some real potential, yet it was all either cast aside in favor of that godforsaken love triangle (why does nearly every fantasy book need to have a love triangle???), or just not executed well at all.

Priory of the Orange Tree was great! Not a masterpiece as there was *a lot* to take in, and there's one character in there that everybody loves, but I couldn't stop thinking "Why is he everyone's favorite? He's an a--hole." Still, the book was structured well, and the world and dragons were fascinating. I didn't finished Fireborne as I sadly lost interest a third of the way in. It focuses more on politics and character drama and trauma than the dragons, and that can throw people off. Still, I think its a good read when in the right mood, and I plan on giving it another chance one day. A Game of Thrones, oooh boy. I liked the first book (enough to get a House Stark "Winter Is Coming" shirt almost on the spot), but I don't know if I'll go on to the rest of the series. A Clash of Kings nearly bored me to tears as literally nothing good or hopeful was happening, and the sex scenes were getting gratuitous (I still think George R.R. Martin is compensating for something given how much sex happens in these books). I get why others love this series, but I don't know if its for me. I've heard of the other books on this list, but I either haven't read them or I'm not that interested. As long as they're better than Fourth Wing, though, that's fine with me! If I could throw a few recommendations of my own in there, I'd choose Eragon (yeah, everyone makes fun of it by calling it Star Wars but with dragons, but the series becomes its own thing as it goes on, and the magic system and dragon rider lore is honestly really cool), His Majesty's Dragon (that one goes without saying), and a fairly new addition, the Songs of Chaos series by Michael Miller. The series isn't finished yet, but the first two books were absolutely amazing. The magic and dragon rider concept especially is unique (example: the main character's dragon is blind. That alone opens up all sorts of questions and possibilities).

Katniss only voted to restart the hunger games because in exchange Coin would allow her to kill Snow, and Katniss knows that when she kills Coin the whole "restart the hunger games" idea will go down the gutter, its made very obvious in the text lol. Plus katniss spends the trilogy very very confused and distressed about the love triangle because she does love gale but not in the way that he wants. Her "leading him on" is literally her dealing with constant trauma and wanting comfort from one of the few people who she trusts Also Nina wasnt ever a sex worker, her clients hired her to use her magic on them. Also Matthias spends most of SOC trying to kill Nina, i definitely dont think her behaviour is half as bad as his
@Luluandherbooks

Honestly I would need to re-read the hunger games for that because It's been a long ass time but I can see myself missing that completely. I understand that Nina never did the sex work, it doesnt change the fact that she was considered a prosititute and lived surrounded by that even if she never engaged in it, she still had that knowledge over Matthias and used it against him and actively says she he is more fun completely oblivious. She treated him like a toy and I didn't like that part of her character

I completely agree with you and i have to say there were many points in which i completely disagreed with the creator of the video...i think the main reason for that was she focused too much on the complexity of each character instead of the motives or ideal propogated by the book itself...spoiler alert humans are complex and the whole point of writing a book is to write characters that can reflect that honestly and at least THG and TSOC does that really well so yea...i disagree with the creator on that basis

So I tried reading Fourth Wing, made it through two chapters then DNF'ed it, and what I picked up in those two chapters was that people who enjoy toxic romances like Twilight, anything Colleen Hoover, SJM (not coming for you), 50 Shades, or 365 Days, etc. would enjoy Fourth Wing because it reads like a modern day romance, it just happens to have a couple dragons in it. The book does seem to be an entry point for a lot into fantasy, which is unfortunate because it's so poorly executed. Thank you for discussing Together We Burn, I'm adding it to my TBR. I just learned about Dragonfruit by Makiia Lucier which sounds fun. And I recommend To Shape A Dragon's Breath, the Lady Trent Memoire series, the Temeraire series, Andre Norton's Halfblood Chronicles, and Dealing With Dragons if you haven't already read that.
