I feel like “booktok” turned into straight up smut. I deleted TikTok bc I tried making friends who are into poetry, writing, and reading…but they all ended up being Hoover fans or straight up corny 😭

Thanks for speaking up for this weird trend of terrible books going viral! TikTok book recommendations have literally scarred me. Thanks for the recommendations too!

Best wishes with your reading choices this year. I hope you get some great stories.

Out of these I've only read Dracula but I agree it is a pretty good one. I think it is the very limited povs in these diaries and letters that help building the suspense.

istg youtube just heard me ranting about how the best selling authors of america being stephen king, colleen hoover and jkr means the bar for literature is in hell because i found this not even an hour later😭

I'm reading Rebecca and the writing is so good! I also love The bear and the nightingale and Spinning Silver. And the Lockwood & co series. The overarcing plot is sooo well done. Honestly YA writers can learn something from those middlegrade books. Like how you actually should plan a story out and have character development. And for manga my favorites are The apothecary diaries and Yona of the dawn. There are a lot of well written manga out there but you definitely have to search. Booktok should really raise their bar because it's atrcocious how low it is rn 😂

Dracula has not gone out of fashion since it was published. Bram Stoker got it right. And I've been lurking around the Miss Peregrine series for a while. Might buy it for my daughter then "borrow" them from her. She'll never know.

You just gained a new subscriber ^^ As a literature PhD student I can't stand awful writing and it's hard to trust a lot of reviewers these days... I love "Dracula" btw, haven't read the others.

I recommend to you the Mask of Mirrors then. It's chunky but for good reason. No page is wasted there👍

Have you read N.K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms or anything by Laini Taylor? They both write SO amazingly. (I also love Atwood's and Bram Stoker's styles, although I read Dracula in Czech when I was studying the language, so I can't really judge his :-D .)

I really wanna read Mask of Mirrors. I really enjoyed the Natural History of Dragons series by one of the duo of authors. I still have to read Alias Grace. I read her stuff whenever i find it in second hand shops, and i have no plan on stopping. If you're interested, her Penelopiad is so amazing (and very short), or the Blind Assassin (so very long, and heartbreaking, and i would recommend the audiobook). She's so good! But i totally get what you mean about the uncanny and difficult and unpleasant. Some of her works make me feel so raw. I get a lot of the same intensity from Octavia E. Butler. I almost dread her works, even though i know i'll love them, because the harshness affects me so much I read Dracula too last year. I'm attempting to listen to another victorian gothic novel, the Beetle, right now. Not sure how i feel about it yet...

This reminds me of the tiktok someone was telling people to rate books even ones you hate 3 stars because writing is hard. Like girl no one told them to write!

I love Dracula, but I think The Infernal Devices and Six of Crows are bad books. There is no science to liking books.
