I read S soon after it came out. Read the original story first and then go back and read the margins and all the extra stuff. The margins and extra stuff is communication between two strangers who pass the book back and forth with their theories and things that are linking the story to things that are happening in real life around them. I think there's a youtube video about how to read it. I'll see if I can find it and link it for you. It's a really cool experience!

S/Ship of Theseus and House of Leaves are two books I'm SO scared to read too! For S I saw that audible has the audiobook for just the "book" part. I'm thinking of getting that and either listening as I read along. Or reading the book once then going back to read the margins and inserts. My sister is just reading everything at once. It's taking her forever, but she's enjoying it. The online forums are super helpful though! They have breakdowns, different ways to read the book, and tips for the different ways to read lol. They also have a "what goes on what page" for the inserts, in case anything falls out

Most of those are on my "scared to read" list too. I read "S" by Doug Dorst & JJ Abrams and it's SO WORTH IT. It's definitely a commitment. But I loved it. If it helps, I took all of the loose stuff out of the book and marked on a notebook which thing was in which page, so I could read the book without all the stuff falling out. I marked the pages too, so when there was an extra thing I knew and read it (It's good to keep those in order so not to give the plot away). I don't know which way is THE BEST way to read this but I read the story and the margins at the same time. It worked fine. Sometimes you have to come back for an annotation or something, but it's no big deal. I also kept jotting down a few facts in a notebook like a detective/scavenger hunt thing, but that was just my preference. Hope it helps ;)

I just started Raven Boys... and I was so excited because I expected to love it, but i don't...and there is nothing more disappointing than not being able to get into a book you think you will love. I'm just not getting into it... I think its the writing style to be honest, its a little choppy for my taste, i don't know if that makes sense. lol. Dive into 11/22/63. I read it as soon as it came out-I think it was the only book I’ve preordered...I liked it so much. I love King. He’s got some great social commentary. I started S bc I think JJ Abrams is the bomb (yes, I’m old, forgive me, for using old language), but I I abandoned it bc it requires patience that I didn’t have...I was reading the margins and the story at the same time. It sits on my shelves, abandoned, but I have yet to summon the ambition to tackle it again. I want to read The Raven Boys too, but I’ve found that fantasy usually disappoints me. I’m slogging (I hope that’s a word) through Strange The Dreamer...STD..Oy...the writing is lovely but I’m like, ok, let’s get things moving and I have no idea wth these Gods have to do with these Angels..I think she mentioned angels at some point...I have a thousand tabs and I still don’t know wth is going on...lol Great video, love your channel, sorry this comment is so long!

Ok, I went into S not knowing anything about it. Literally just bought it because it looked great and had pretty things in it. BUT I absolutely loved it! The only thing that you should know is that the comments in the margins are different timelines. But you can tell by the different colors they use. Not gonna lie, it is the kind of book you really have to focus on, but it really is worth it! I simply read the text from the book for a couple of pages and then went back to read the dialogue in the margins. After some time you really get used to it and the story really is captivating and exciting. Hope youre feeling better and much love from Germany, love your vids ☺️

I read S/Ship of Theseus last summer and I was so confused on how to do it as well! I tried a few different things, but what ended up working best for me was to read the chapter of the book Ship of Theseus itself, then go back and read the margins of that chapter. Then move to the next. The tricky part is that there are margins upon the margins.. if that makes sense? You'll learn that one color of pen was, say, the first note they added, then there are occasional additional margins that they add when re-reading the book, so that's something to keep in mind. But it definitely comes together and proves to be a pretty interesting book. I hope you enjoy it!

I've read both 'Raven Boys' and 'On Writing', by Stephen King. Referring to 'Raven Boys', if you have yet to read it, I would recommend that you do. Honestly, I really loved it, but even if you don't, I do think you will at least like it partly. If not for the story, at least for the characters. You said you've discovered you like magical realism, and that book is great for that. There's a ghost boy, a girl who lives in a house full of lovely psychic ladies, a murder mystery, and lots of likable characters with interesting backgrounds. I also really enjoyed the writing style - it's very pretty and well-written. 'On Writing' was a good book. I wouldn't call it great, but it did inspire me a bit to want to write. I'm a writer myself and I found it interesting to read about his perspective, because we're entirely different writers. Where I like to take my time and map out what I'm going to write, he just writes and writes, and writes some more, and that seems to be the gist of what he's trying to say - don't think, just write. For the most part, though, I viewed that as more of just a partial memoir of a writer, because he talks about his past and his life as a writer more than anything else, so I think since you're such a fan of his, it's something you will want to finish so you can see through his eyes. I'm glad you did this video. I think it's an idea more readers should share, because I think we all have books eventually that end up on an odd sort of pedestal in our mind's eye. Thanks for sharing.

11/22/63 is one thats best to go into without rlly high expectations. very good book overall, very well developed plot but there are parts that are a little lacking, so if you expect it to be the best book you've ever read, you may be disappointed. its not perfect, but its more a story about the journey anyway I am one of the ones that didnt like the raven boys, but im not into paranormal stuff so that was a major reason for that. also the topics throughout the series feel like they were pulled out of a hat and then someone was forced to write a story that connected them. like, boarding school, psychics, legend of a dead king, magic, other spoilery things, etc. just dont mesh well in the same story, at least in my opinion. southern reach, yep its confusing, but the first book is the best. the 2nd and 3rd give the 1st much more context since they focus on other characters, the past, the mission base, etc. that were on the periphery in the 1st, but the description of some events are so vague that you have a hard idea knowing what is going on half the time. overall, very eerie and ethereal, and if you are into science/biology, there are parts that might be even more unnerving as you realize just how wrong the things are that are happening. also house of cards and s sound rlly interesting, went to check them out on goodreads and already had HOL on my tbr, so that was cool.

Read just the book through WITHOUT looking at the annotations because they have spoilers. 2. Go back to beginning, read Chapter 1, then read the pencil annotations only. These are Eric's annotations. Then go on to Chapter 2 and do the same thing. You will go through the whole book this way. 3. Go back to the beginning again and read blue and black annotations - Blue is Jen, Black is Eric's response 4. Next read orange/green annotations - Jen is orange, Eric is green 5. Next read purple and red. Jen is purple, Eric is red 6. Then black and black.

I haven't read S, but I have it and want to. There's forums about it that tell you the order to read it in. The ones I've seen, you read the actual story (book) first. Then you read certain annotations, then another certain colour of annotations. Like, there are pen colours that you have to read through first. So basically read the full book (story), then read it again (certain pen colour annotations), then again (other pen colour annotations), and again, and again, until you run out of annotations.

You’ll love it or you’ll hate it, I definitely don’t think you’ll fall in the middle. And The Unexpexted Everything is my least favorite Morgan Matson book, but it’s still pretty good.

I love the new hair color. And I feel you 100% on the struggle bus ride. That’s shit bumpy 🥴

Hey I think you should read The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, who is the Arch Bishop of South Africa. It's not really religious, it's just a cute feel good book about the two of them being friends. Might make you feel better. Either way, feel better! I love watching your videos! 📚😊

I read the first Area X book recently and have no idea what I read, so not planning on continuing the series unfortunately. S looks very daunting, so I can't blame you for being scared to read that one.

Hey Natasha! I’m fairly new to your channel but I’m a huge fan of Chelsea and Julie and caught the Drunk Live Halloween show and was like why am I not following you !? You are hilarious! Love the new hair color 💙💜

I'm terrified of American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I don't know why lol. I started reading it mostly over audiobook and I was just so lost that I have to put it down for a bit. I don't know if it's just because I'm not used to Neil Gaiman's writing or what. 11/22/63 sounds super interesting but that size... I mean, I guess after reading It, nothing that lengthy should scare me but alas, here I am! I saw Codie read S earlier this year, and before that I had NO IDEA there were books that required extra work 😂I've only read Annhilation from the Southern Reach Trilogy. It went quickly but I honestly wasn't too interested in it. I'm sorry you've been feeling like you're in a run - I have definitely been the same way in November. Hope you're well :)

You must read American Gods! It is definitely a 5 star book!

U look great in every hair color. Your videos are the best!! Life is a struggle but here for the ride!! Stay strong 💪 and the video that is a hard one for me is anything huge by the master Stephen King. A little life I had to listen too and it made me CRY ... and it is heartbreaking !!!!

I am also terrified of house of leaves. It’s staring at me from my shelves right now and I feel it’s judgement. 11/22/63 is so good. It’s very different than a lot of his other work and I got to the end and felt a lot of emotions I wasn’t expecting. I also had high expectations because people told me how much I would love it and i really did. Also heard that about A Little Life. As a non-writer, I am so interested in getting to his non-fiction. Have you read Danse Macabre yet? I liked Annihilation, but not the rest of the trilogy. It’s very....interesting 😂 Sorry for my book of a comment, I’m just happy to see you back! 🙃

I'm honestly not the biggest SK fan, but I loved 11/22/63. I was scared to get into it, but I flew through it. For as long as it was, it didn't seem that way. The Hulu series was fantastic too!

Girl my SAD is through the fucking roof. It’s going to be a long, sad winter. I’m depressed to begin with and not seeing the sun for like months kills me. And I hate being cold 😑 S looks so damn intimidating!!

The Souther Reach trilogy was so weird, I loved the first book and read it in a day but had to give up halfway through the third book because I had no idea what was happening and it got so boring, hope your experience with it is better! Also, I love the hair!

I know what you mean about on writing. When I read on writing, I finished it, cried, plotted a novel, and contemplated getted a shadow box to put the book inside of and hang on my wall. ._. it's a good damn book for sure.

Ooooh understandable! I broke it down into 50 page chunks each day, reading more if I wanted to. And it's a GREAT story. 5 stars for me for sure.

For S, I found it easier to read the book first, and then the footnotes and letters . It's well worth it. Also, I got super sick reading House of Leaves too. Still not sure how I feel about it other than the fact it scared me half to death.

Read S.! It intimidated the hell out of me but it was really good! I read fairly quickly but I didn't read the actual book they're annotating (in its entirety). I thoroughly enjoyed it with just reading the sections they were commenting on and I think I would have gotten too bogged down if I tried to read everything. The real story is definitely in the margins!
@shummus49686 жыл бұрын
Don't read the actual book! Just read the margins and then kind of cross reference when they specifically mention a part of the book

I’ve been in a major funk this whole month as well!! I’ve barely filmed, and I’m not motivated to either!! Reading wise I’ve been slumping as well 😩 I read Annihilation and I didn’t understand what I read 🤦🏽♀️ it’s very confusing but enjoyable, if that makes sense, but honestly I’m not even wanting to read the rest of the trilogy.
