I love the Memoirs of Lady Trent series by Marie Brennan. It's about a woman who is a dragon naturalist. Each book she goes to a different country to study the dragons there and encounters some shenanigans along the way. The world building and dragons are awesome.

I absolutely adore this series! Just finished the sequel (Turning darkness into light), and even though it is written quite differently (it's epistolary!) I loved it as well. I really can't understand why booktubers rarely talk about the series. Everyone who's picked the books (and especially the audiobooks!) ended loving them thoroughly. Couldn't recommend more!!!

My favorite dragon books will always Anne McCaffrey's Pern series. Outside of The Hobbit, this is what got me into fantasy as a child and the dragons are so central to the plot. I also enjoy that there's "levels" of dragons, with the main dragons that only a few people can bond, but also the fire lizards that let nearly anyone bond a mini dragon.

Definitely my all-time favourite underhyped dragon book is "Seraphina" by Rachel Hartman (and everything else set in that universe). Never read anything quite like it and I'm sad more people don't talk about it. A second underhyped dragon book would be Eon by Alison Goodman.

Here's a couple; The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn - Tyler Whiteside (dragons are more like firebreathing beasts, but their.. digestive system plays a part in the magic system in the books - otherwise it has swindlers and heists) Fool's Gold (book 1 of the Dragon Lords) - Jon Hollins. (parody on the chosen one farmboy who fights the evil dragon overlords) Rhapsody (Symphony of Ages book 1) - Elizabeth Haydon (features a romantic relationship with a dragon)

Kind of Sci-Fantasy Anne McCaffery’s Dragons of Pern series has some of the best dragons I’ve ever read. They have such awesome personalities and the bond between dragon and rider is amazing! And then there are little cat sized dragonets that they use to help the common people understand the dragon riders better and they are super entertaining. I know it’s an old series but so good!
@meghanjackson74943 жыл бұрын
Tyler Whiteside’s Kingdom of Grit trilogy, starting with The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn, has a twist on dragons with the magic system linked to them in an unusual way. They’re a lot of fun with heists and a great band of characters and more lore and themes than I was expecting. Worth a read if you like dragons for sure! 🐉 The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb features my favourite dragons, not to mention they’re my favourite books of all time!

A dragon obsession got me super into fantasy as a kid and hasn't diminished much since. Dragonriders of Pern was the series that I got obsessed with as a teen, at the same level that many people did with Harry Potter. But I haven't found any dragon stories lately that sucked me in so I'm definitely going to try some of these!

I'll mention the Earthsea Cycle, especially Tehanu and The Other Wind by Ursula K. LeGuin (older, more classical fantasy, but I really liked her take on dragons) - and the Reign of Fire series by E.E. Knight, where the main POVs are actually dragons! It was super cool and original, would highly recommend to any dragon lover. :) Also wanted to say, it's because of you I picked up The Winnowing Flame trilogy! One of my favorite books with dragons is Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. It's on the fence between middle grade and YA. It's about a princess to doesn't want to fit the classic doll mold of princess anymore or marry the prince her parents want her to marry, so she runs away and asks to live with the neighboring dragons. The dragon accepts and she spends her days organizing the library and the treasure, cooking delicious dragon sized food, and dealing with dumb knights who want to 'rescue' her because they think she was kidnapped. I read it when I was younger and it's still one of my favorite books ever!

Throwing my little recommendation in here too is Dragon Mage by M.L Spencer. It is currently available with kindle unlimited if you have that. Also, if you're looking for a good anime with dragons and that bond between a person and a dragon I would recommend Dragon Pilot! It's on Netflix and it's very good. I found it very cozy. ♥

I also recommend Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly. It's really amazing and I feel it's not getting the recognition it deserves (even decades after its release). Main premise/pitch is it's a story about a woman having a midlife crisis on whether she becomes a comitted wife or further her career. And the depiction of dragons hereis a cross between mythical and scientific. They are seen as legendary creatures worth an epic poem to write about, but those who have encountered dragons treat them as creatures in need of further research.
