I just read a book called "Four Wings of the Dragon Goddess" By Theodora Quinn. It had Dragons and time travel which for me is my two favorite things. It felt like I was being led through a D&D campaign as I read it. Unique experience.

Dragon Lance felt like (Off that ruddy movie...) it was just going to generic heroes vs. dragons, but after I sat down and read Dragons of Summer Flame I blown away by how complex Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis managed to make the D&D dragons the Tiamat incarnation included. Honest I adored Steel Brightblade and his Blue dragon Blaze. They were like the Anti-hero pre-incarnation of Eragon and Saphira! (I didn't read the the books in the mid yet. Don't judge me.) Besides Wings of Fire being a YA all-dragons series, I can't get over just under-looked How to Train Dragon's books are. Cressida Cowell clearly love The Hobbit and Wizard of Earthsea but her dragons became my standard for fantasy dragons. I can't get over how Amazing Furious the Dragon was!

I think I have said this one before, but I am particularly fond of the dragons in The Immortals Quartet by Tamora Pierce ( starting with Wild Magic). They are not main characters for the most part, but worth investing in the read to meet them. Not everyone likes Anne McCaffrey’s books but I do, and I actually recommend you start with her YA aimed books which starts with Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and Dragondrums. It’s not a common starting point but I love those ones. I read many of the ones you talk about but happy to see some I can still try.

I *am* planning a dragon in the story/novel(s) I am writing (spoiler! which no one will have read/remember if and when I finish/publish it), but I feel like if I wasn't already planning it, I might have been tempted to sneak one in just to make it more appealing to you xD (PS: there are also faeries)
@Liz860004 жыл бұрын
What a lovely video, thank you Jean. I guess my favourite would be faeries books, but with faes like in Lord of the Rings, or in Holly Black books, not just nice and good creatures. I would love to find some good books with mermaids, as they are maybe the fantastic creatures I love the most, but I’ve never found a good fantasy book with mermaids yet... Do you have any recommendations for me ? Oh ! And witches of course ! Some recommendations with witches would be lovely as well pretty please !

E.E. Knight's "Age of Fire" series (beginning with "Dragon Champion") is entirely told from the viewpoint of dragons, and it's one of my favorites of all time. It seems to be rather obscure, as I almost never see the series mentioned on dragon book recommendation lists. Great video!

I really love, and I mean LOVE, Las Crónicas de la torre and Memorias de Idhun by Laura Gallego. She is a spanish author and she wrote a great dragons books. I'm not pretty sure if they're in english, I think so. I recomend you if you love dragons, especially if you love dragons who can comunicate with humans. Actually in this books the dragons are so relate it to humans. Really amazing books which deserve more attention

mwarrrrrr!!! Temeraire... I've got to get back into that, and Tooth and Claw I never heard of, so will have to check into that. One I thought interesting, part of a 4 book series, but only personally read part 1 is "The Dragon DeLaSangre" having dragons capable of human form taking place in modern-day Miami. Lastly, although a movie, "I Am Dragon" is a wonderfully-done Russian film. Thanks for sharing this list; regarding intelligence and not always being evil; it's a more rare depiction, unfortunately.

Have you read Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series? Wonder what you think of them... I love anything that includes bonding of some kind between human and animals/mythical creatures...
@JeansThoughts4 жыл бұрын
I'm really undecided whether to read them or not. I used to want to because they seem to be classics in this genre but then loads of review have highlighted some really outdated depictions of sexual violence and ambiguous consent in them that I'd rather avoid.
@stangbooks65274 жыл бұрын
@@JeansThoughts I can see where some reviews might go there, though in my personal opinion I don't remember those instances being that strong. It is a more feudal society so some depictions were harsher. Then again I started reading this series in 4th grade and it has forever been one of my all time favorites. I'm currently re-reading it in chronological rather than publication order and I might have to jump back and update my thoughts. But I would say if you wanted to give the series a try, I would recommend reading what my mother first gave me in the series. The mini-trilogy Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums. While not as full on dragon relevant as some of the other books, it does have fire lizards as central characters and Menolly is one of my all time favorite book characters. This series focuses on the Harper Hall (the musicians of the land) and gives a good overall understanding of the world as a whole.
@chocoholizzie4 жыл бұрын
@@JeansThoughts Yes i totally understand. I read them 20+ years ago when I was a lot younger and so I think overlooked those aspects more easily, Reading Merphy Napier's 1 star review of Dragonflight on Goodreads was an eye opener, as I don't remember any of the scenes she'd highlighted! I want to reread them and see what I think now. But I did really love them at the time mainly for the world building and the dragons. I reread the White Dragon (which was my favourite from what I remember) last year and gave it 4.5 stars and the half a star was dropped mainly for the problematic relationship/consent side of things.

YES YES I was literally just wishing you'd make an updated dragon video! I was wondering, did you read the Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman? The mc's love interest is a dragon in that one, and they go on fun librarian adventures together. It's also one of those books where the dragons can assume human form. And if you're looking for a middle grade dragon series, I'd highly recommend the Wings of Fire series, which has also been adapted into graphic novels. I loved the Eragon books as a kid; they definitely got me into fantasy as a genre. I did read the first Temeraire book a while ago but never continued the series--this is a good reminder to me to pick those back up! The Rain Wild Chronicles are sooooo good; I need to reread those, too.

Knowing you love Alise from Dragon Keeper, you might really enjoy the Memoirs of Lady Trent series by Marie Brennan. The dragons are not sentient (at least at first, I don't want to spoil the fun), but the struggle of a female dragon naturalist in a society similar to 19th century Britain is absolutely a blast. It's my favourite series of all times. Perfection as much as Tooth and Claw.

Ok so, does anyone know what this book is? Like 12 years ago I read a short (maybe 200-350 pages) dragon book, and I've been trying to remember what it was called ever since. The premise is a woman/virgin was sacrificed to a dragon. It turned out that the dragon could shapeshift into a person, and didn't actually want to eat the woman or do anything else to her. The book is told from the perspective of the woman. Together, they go on a quest and become a couple. That's all I remember, does anyone know what book it is? I know it's a long shot, but I figured that the comment section is going to be all about dragon books anyway.
