The best book for me this month was actually the audio version of "Wishful Drinking" by Carrie Fisher. It was so good that it actually ended my slump of not loving any books in a while this year. Honorable mention goes to "A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo" as it was totally worth the hype. Thank you John Oliver!

Insane reading month Emily!!! I read Animal Farm last year and loved it! I was really pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting to like something so grounded in political philosophy, but having background knowledge on the subject definitely added to my enjoyment reading it. It was actually one of my favourite reads of 2017, probably because having studied philosophy it definitely made me smile. It definitely packed a punch in a short amount of time. I gave it a 4.5/5. I really have had a bad experience with murder/mystery/thrillers in general. I also find them dreadfully predictable and had sworn to never pick up another (at least for a while) but after hearing you rave about The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, I am tempted to give the genre one last go....especially if there is to be a sci-fi twist. After reading The Woman in the Window earlier this year and rating it a 1.5/2 stars, I have been in a bit of a slump myself. It was predictable from the first few pages and I had a problems with the premise. I completely felt the same.

I was in a reading slump since August and I read 15 books in March! Some of the books I read took me MONTHS to finish, but I finished them all in March and I'm so proud of myself. I can't stop reading right now. And I just ordered The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle after watching this video (I blame booktube for making me broke) because I've heard so many good things about it.

Hi Emily. Boy 14 books in one month is impressive. It took me 3 months just to read that many. Thank you for another great video, I have never heard about any of those books. As of today, I have just finished listening to the last 5 chapters of the book adaptation of the movie Star Wars the Last Jedi, which was very thought provoking and interesting. I love the new characters that have been introduced in the last book, and who are still very compelling now. Either tonight, or tomorrow, I am going to either start listening to the second volume in a light novel series that is based on the anime A Certain Magical Index, or I will jump back into the second book in the Gentlemen Greatcoats Knight's Shadow by Sebastien De Castell, or the third book in the Crown of Stars series, the Burning Stone, by Kate Elliott. I am not sure which one yet, or I may go off in a totally different direction and get distracted by the Poldark series by Winston Graham. Again, I am not sure. Happy reading.

I love your makeup! It also looks so good with that white and black striped shirt. I have NOT been in the mood to read basically at all this year. A bit in January and the beginning of February, but I didn't read at all in March. I have some more free time this month, so I'm hoping to use it as a catch up- to finish books that I'm "currently reading" but not actively reading; which may be why I haven't felt like reading. I've been reading the same books for what seems like forever but I'm not allowing myself to start more books because I've already started like 6 that I'm in the middle of.

Girl, you need to explain your star ratings because you gave Beneath The Sugar Sky 4 stars but you didn't quite mention anything you like about it! Yet you gave 4.5 stars for Seven Death which you loved! Like how do you justify the 4 stars? 😆
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox 6 жыл бұрын
There's no real logic behind it XD I rarely if ever give 5 stars so 4.5 is amazing but there might have been a thing or two I would have changed (minor things). Beneath the Sugar Sky is a weird rating (probably more of a 3.5) but damn do I love the worlds... just not the characters nor the story too much lol

you should try reading some works by agatha christie! i completely understand the frustration that comes with finishing a thriller and not feeling satisfied by the ending, and i've never felt that way when reading christie's stuff, her plot twists always throw me off and she's so clever as an author. obviously her books are less thriller and more mystery, but they're still so intriguing and really keep you clueless until the end :) you talking about the seven deaths of evelyn hard castle really reminded me of some of christie's work, and i definitely want to check it out :)

I recently read Hunger by Roxane Gay and it was so good. It also talked a lot about how women are judged but more specifically on their bodies. Especially given your health struggles (and how you were/are society’s ideal even when you felt so unhealthy and frustrated with your body) you would probably really enjoy it.

So many good reviews of Evelyn Hugo, and now from you... I should really read it. 😊 Thank you for mentioning the sexism and homophobia in adult sci-fi/fantasy books. I’m intimidated with reading adult books written from men because of that reason, since they are usually long and I don’t want to waste my time only to be disappointed. Maybe you should do a video on your favorite adult sci-fi and fantasy books that are not sexist or homophobic? That would be a great recommendations video. :)

There a lots of women that writes fantasy/sci fi and are underrated and most don't have any sexism/homophobia in them. Octavia Butler, Ursula K LeGuin, Victoria Schwab, N K Jemisin, Becky Chambers, etc. As for men, there are plenty that also don't have these issues. Brandon Sanderson, Sylvain Neuvel and I currently have a lot more on my TBR so I'll be able to recommend more soon :)

I've read 11 this months and DNF 2 more. One that I intent to pick up again, because I actually enjoyed it, my mood just drastically changed in the middle and I needed something else. I read the Illuminae Files this month, all three, so that's definitely my favorite thing (probably fav sci-fi books EVER), of the three I think I liked the first one best but I'm not completely sure. I read a non-fiction book, which I never do, Born a Crime by Trevor Noah and I went the audiobook way because I like his voice and that was the right call for this. It was heavy, sprinkled with guilt-freeing laughs, I enjoyed it.

I love your channel and feel like we have very similar taste in books, whenever you recommend a book I imidiently have to add it to my goodreads. Would you ever consider making a video about your favorite science fiction novels? I really want to get more into the genre, but I don't know where to start. It also feels like so many of the most popular classic scific is really sexist (like you talked about with The Forever War) and as a feminist I don't particularity want to read about a future where women have less rights and liberties than we do today. xxx

Jay G Warcross was a good read (not great but good)... good enough to make me want to read the second book. I know people compare it to Ready Player One but I find it to be very different.

I haven't read the sci-fi book, but is there a possibility that the sexist and homophobic parts of the book may intentionally be there to make people notice issues with our own society?

Thank you for recommending Evelyn Hardcastle. I immediately checked into it after your review on Goodreads and loved it. I'm not sure why they're changing the title in the U.S. Trying to think where the "and a half" comes from

too bad that you don't like The Woman in the Window and Behind Closed Doors. I really enjoy reading them and they are some of my favorite psychological thrillers. Also, The Humans seems tempting, I definitely will read it.

Your take on warcross and the thriller had me dying. Oatmeal bland is going to be a new low for female characters for you LOL I am going to attempt that book but I don't have high hopes based on the fact that I like a well fleshed out plot. I read 7 and the best ones and I have two to recommend. Red Notice by Bill Browder non fiction not my usual cup of tea but it reads like a spy thriller but actual real life events thats all I can say about that one and the alice network by kate quinn which I enjoyed a lot. I am hoping I get back on a roll of reading more I am really excited like you about this month so fingers crossed!

It's funny because I find that we have similar tastes but Ready Player One was my favorite book I read last year and I loved Warcross! (I'm not into video games but I liked the worlds in both books)

I’ve been in a bad “ starting many books, but not finishing them” mood. I’m in between reading at least 4 books and they’re all great but I’m having some attention span issues. I did finish The Grownup by Gillian Flynn which was just okay to me and I also got through Saga vol. 2 which was great.

I don‘t ever see his books mentioned on Booktube, but if you want to read a really good Thriller/Detective Story, I would highly recommend checking out the books by Chris Carter. He‘s one of my favourite authors and has not disappointed me. You definitely got me interested in the Evelyn Hardcastle book, so I‘ll be checking this one out for sure!

I loved The Humans! it's like you said, it's funny and then it starts to be very deep and i caught myself laughing and at the same time thinking "okay, but this is a serious topic, how is he doing it" and i didn't want to get to the end cause i loved the main character so i didn't want anything bad happening to him but also didn't want him to do something bad. Also, i really appreacite your reviews because you point out the sexism and other important topics in books, which i don't see many booktubers do, whether they like the book or not, so really cool from you! Keep the good work =) **
