Yes! His Dark Materials! I'm with you--I acknowledge the flaws in the series, but there's so much nostalgia wrapped up in it that I just love it so much.

I picked up that same edition of His Dark Materials because you mentioned it in a previous video . I’m still in book one . I love it though and honestly to me it doesn’t even read like a middle grade book which I’m happy about !

Agreed! It doesn't even read like YA (let alone middle grade!) I pretty much consider it Adult even though kids would like it. It's a very different read depending on the age of the reader though!

Since I visited Czech Republic last year, I started to finally read Kafka books. The first one (which I believe is the most popular one) was "The Metamorphosis" and I loved it, especially if we consider the time at it was written. I am now reading "The Power Of Habbit", a wonderful piece of non-fiction literature, especially for those who want to compreend how to be more productive in life. Well, sorry for my English, I am Portuguese, but I want to say that I love your channel, very interesting stuff. Subscribed.

His Dark Materials is one of my all time faves 💕💕 I’ve read it 3 times now and the first time I reread it, I realized basically the whole thing had gone over my head as a kid too haha. I reread it this summer for the first time since high school and realized it has a few flaws, so unfortunately I can no longer call it PERFECT, but it’s always gonna have a special place in my heart ❤️❤️ and the ending still makes me cry 💔

I finished 7 books, but one was a Clash of Kings and I only had 150 pages left so I'm not really counting it. My month started out crummy but picked up eventually. YAY!

I recently read The Golden Compass for the first time a few months back and loved it. My favorite was book 3. Cried my eyes out! I would love if they continued the story.

I also prefered I'll Give You the Sun over The Sky is Every Where. I read The Sky is Every Where first and I was skeptical about I'll Give You the Sun. Im so glad I still picked it up! Such a good YA!

I'm so sorry you had food poisoning! january has been a bad month for me too, i had to have a filling at the dentist which left me feeling really shaky and horrible, then i sprained my wrist which thankfully much better now! i have seen some good films too and read some good things. a 50/50 month really

The "His Dark materials" series is one of my all time faves, but I haven't re-read that since I was like 14/15. I was worried I wouldn't like it anymore, but if you can still enjoy it as an adult it think I'll have to add it to my tbr!

Have you read any of Mary Roach’s books. They are non-fiction, science books that focus on a specific topic. They are also quite funny. My favourite is Gulp and it’s all about the digestive system. Seriously recommend any of hers if you are looking for non-fiction and josh like science

I read 4 books this month! All of them were between 450-650 pages and I thoroughly enjoyed all of them, so i had a pretty good month! I also bought wayyy too many books this month (8) so my TBR shelf is way more crowded. Oops :P

The joke if you love YA Contemporary was funny. You made me laugh. I enjoy contemporary, but I also love sci-fi, which is why I watch your channel. I'm hoping to get into more YA and Adult Fantasy as well. I enjoyed reading the His Dark Materials trilogy in my early teens. It was an interesting fantasy.

we read the same edition of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman :) This series have become my all time favorite series. I agree with you. It's not perfect, it had some boring parts and some weak parts but overall, I respected the knowladge, imagination of the author a lot. He created multiple worlds and he explored them with history, philosophy. religion and science. Lots of references to literature too. And I was so fascinated to learn some of the symbolism and metaphors that this book had. My favorite part of the book was definetly chapter 19(I think its book 3, page 859). I just loved how he described the certain subject with such good creativity :) so sorry if i made any grammer mistakes. English is not my native language. have a great day :)

Yes, I hadn't realized as a kid all the messages about religion 😂 Now I understand why everyone was freaking out about it. He definitely created a very interesting world (or worlds!) and I hope I'll like the other books in The Book of Dust series!

I remember I read that Dark Materials trilogy when I was younger, I liked it a lot as well until the ending came. Then I was just angry and heartbroken. I don't remember it at all though! Your description of it in other videos brought back some of the memories but not any of the ending. I still couldn't reread it though.....I really like my happy endings and no matter how that book ended it apparently made me very upset, so not brave enough to revisit it. 😅 I'm traumatized by it but I don't actually remember what even happened in it. lol

Great video! This month I read I, Robot by Isaac Asimov, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie. I liked a lot I, Robot and I was happy to discover that it has almost no connection with the movie... From Asimov I still prefer The Foundation Trilogy though. The Great Gatsby was nice but not as good as I expected. It's probably not my type of book. The Seven Dials Mystery was an average Agatha Christie, it didn't amaze me.

Oh, I read The Golden Compass for a bookclub last month, and I wasn't impressed with it 😁 I read The Subtle Knife almost right after that, but I have no idea why - I just had to know what happened next, even though nothing actually did. I feel bad for not liking it, it's such a beloved series.

I read His Dark Materials last year for the first time, and honestly it changed my life. I loved them so much!! Can't wait to re-read them eventually (maybe this year?). Btw...I love your videos. Hi Emily. How are you doing? It's funny that you would mention the book sapiens or a brief history of sapiens because I was actually able to pick that up in an audio version from a free service that I get audio books from call the Bard the Braille audio reading database. It's a service where people can come in and volunteer to read a book from cover to cover word for word and then I can access those books because I have a visual impairment for free. I also use Audible and through that I was able to read and listen to another non-fiction book call the princess diarist that was red and written by Carrie Fisher who played Princess Leia in the Star Wars series. That was a really funny and interesting book to read. I also forgot to tell you that I work as a massage therapist and in order to renew my license every two years I have been reading and answering questions with a textbook called Energy Medicine the scientific basis by James L. Oschman. I am currently reading this book through the text-to-speech feature on my Kindle Fire which has been really neat. Apart from that I am still listening to the book Prince of dogs by Kate Elliott this is the second book in the crown of stars series. I'm hoping to start reading the third book The Burning Stone really soon. I will have to let you know what I think about the book A Brief History of sapiens once I finish it. I know how you feel about Harry Potter I love that Series so much.

The issue I have with books like Sapiens and Guns, Germs, and Steel is that they try to condense human history into a few finer points and unifying theories. It’s just too complicated for that, imo. I do enjoy reading such ‘grand’ histories, don’t get me wrong, but I always take them with a huge grain of salt.

I do think it makes it more accessible to the average person that isn't super into history so it works for them (me included!). I think it's a good way to find out which parts of history interest you so you can find more details in other books you know?
