Yes I turned it on at 8PM EST and I got bored with it when KC tied it up at 2 in the bottom of the 8th around 11 PM EST and turned it off. I check back two hours later and the final score is Yankee's win 8 to 6? WTF? neither team was hitting all game right up through the 8th.

The delay is actually generally due to the graphics system that overlays the strike zone/pitch tracker. Anything like that (along with first down lines, virtual add insertion) takes a bit of time to process and so is a little bit behind. In some cases the video switcher will send a GPI to things like the audio board and it will bring in a few frames of audio delay so that the bat crack sound lines up, then automatically switches back once you go to one of the other cameras.

For those confused, this is actually a balk. Pitcher started coming up to a set position as he normally does after looking at the signs and stepped off mid way. Cant step off/hesitate while youre moving on the mound. That's what the ump meant by start and stop. Not that he started and stopped coming to the plate, that he started and stoped his normal movement to the set position. What he should have done since he already started coming up was to come set and then step off. He also has a slow come up to the set position. If he stood up straight away and stepped off, I dont think the ump calls that because it doesnt look like his regular motion. Its the fact he came up slowly as he normally does and steps off that draws the balk call. This video, I find explains balks very well. Around the 2:00 mark is where he talks about hesitation when coming to the set position. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eorYZ6yln85slbc

There’s one little bit of the balk ruling you’re forgetting: “Rule 8.05 Comment: Umpires should bear in mind that the purpose of the balk rule is to prevent the pitcher from deliberately deceiving the base runner. If there is doubt in the umpire’s mind, the “intent” of the pitcher should govern. However, certain specifics should be borne in mind: (a) (b) Straddling the pitcher’s rubber without the ball is to be interpreted as intent to deceive and ruled a balk. With a runner on first base the pitcher may make a complete turn, without hesitating toward first, and throw to second. This is not to be interpreted as throwing to an unoccupied” If you really think the pitcher was deliberately trying to deceive the base runner in this instance then by all means keep thinking this was the right call.

@@lucien8581 I do agree with you there, it is up to discretion but I'd rather just have that be called a balk. Make it black and white. There is no real way to tell if a player is being deceiving. Implementing that sort of system will create more chaos because its all up to interpretation. Keep it easy for umps and other officials. All he needed to do was finish his motion to come set and step off, this whole this is avoided. Wouldve taken a second. Also since youre bringing in rules, Rule 5.07 (a) (2) states "Preparatory to coming to a set position, the pitcher shall have one hand on his side; from this position he shall go to his set position as defined in Rule 5.07(a)(2) without interruption and in one continuous motion" His motion up to the set position was interrupted. Hence by legal definition it was the right call.
@fitzhume36
@fitzhume36 3 жыл бұрын
Every pitcher has their own 'coming to set' motion before their delivery. In the video, watch how he comes set before delivering. He performs the same motion, hunched over and then up while touching/rubs his tight hip, however, he then steps off the back of the rubber. At 3:21 you can see his normal motion to delivery. This is why a balk was called. He starts down in the hunched over-look at home. In order for him to disengage from the rubber at this point in time, he would either have to step off while hunched over or come to a full set and then step off the rubber. Since this motion is the same every time to his set motion, in this case, he decided to step off the back of the rubber during this which looks exactly like his 'come to set' motion. The umpires had seen several pitches since his entry into the game to let them know exactly what his delivery is like and then could call a balk if necessary. Pitchers are creatures of habit.

@somecanadianguy8558 3 жыл бұрын
10000% this. Started to come set and stepped off midway. I mentioned in my reply that even if he came up more abruptly and stepped off the umps likely dont call it since it deviates from his normal "coming to set" motion.
@smithzk
@smithzk 3 жыл бұрын
No. His set position is when he brings the glove up and his hand is in the glove. Watch the pickoff attempts. No balk. So, you can't say he balked if he never even came to the position he came to on the previous two pickoff attempts where no balk was called.
@fitzhume36
@fitzhume36 3 жыл бұрын
@@somecanadianguy8558 Sorry I didn't see your reply. You are correct in your assessment that if he was quicker with his motion that was closer to the end of his set position that the balk may not have been called. Have a good one.
@somecanadianguy8558
@somecanadianguy8558 3 жыл бұрын
@@smithzk You can balk without coming to a set position. See around the 2:05 minute mark in the video below. I balk is not constrained to a pickoff move. Even if he dropped the ball hunched over, or even just clearing some dirt to get ready, thats a balk. See Scott Oberg in the 2018 NLDS for that. If you have a normal tendency for every pitch, start it and deviate from it, you can be called for a balk. No matter where that tendency occurs.
@smithzk
@smithzk 3 жыл бұрын
@@somecanadianguy8558 I wasn't saying that the balk should be constrained to a pickoff move. I was saying that in the pickoff moves, he did the same motion up to the point where the balk was called. Then brought the glove up and brought his hand to the glove, then moved to first base. I'm not understanding what you're saying. If this is his normal move, then where did he deviate in this case? He stepped off the rubber before he got to the position where he made a move to first base previously. So, he could not be called for having started a move home and stopped in this case if he was already allowed to move to first in the previous cases.

Jomboy really annoys me sometimes. It'd be one thing if he said "didn't look like a balk to me", but he said they called the balk specifically because he made a move to home. That's a justification he completely pulled out of his ass, and it's completely obvious that he didn't make a move home. That's a large reason why so many people are claiming it's not a balk, because the justification he's claiming was used simply doesn't exist. This isn't the first time he's done something like this, creating a strawman justification for a call that he disagrees with, thereby influencing his audience into agreeing with him. He needs to fucking learn the rules of these sports if he's going to continue to make videos like these. And I don't even give a shit about baseball, so I'm saying this without bias for either team here.

The balk call is not about him coming home in this instance. It was about stepping off the back of the mound while coming set. Once you start coming set, you have to come completely set before you can step off again. Pitcher here (yes its kinda ticky tacky) looks like he starts coming set and then steps off the back before coming fully set. Thus the ump saying "I got him starting and stopping"

Absolutely the right call. It's unique here because of the pitcher's setup, being crouched then having to come up to take his leg off. But if you review his earlier "come ups" (idk what to call them), he does the exact same motion. Jomboy has great content but comes up short here.

The way loaisiga was slowly coming up from his crouch is the same move he makes when he comes to his set. Because he stepped off IN THE MIDDLE of the movement, that's a balk. No, the pitchers hand wasn't on the ball to come to the set position, therefore that ball isn't in play yet. That is when the batter goes to set also.. You cannot put your hand on the ball then take your hand off the ball in any way. That would be a balk. You CANNOT go to a set position without your hand on the ball to prepare to throw.

@@joshtheking1772 Doesn't matter whether the ball is in play, there needs to be a continuous motion from the preparatory position (him hunched over) to the set position, followed by a clear stop. Then anything such as stepping off the rubber can happen. Demon here actually explained it well - it was the fact that he stepped off while in the transition phase from preparatory to set position is why it was called (rightfully) a balk.
@Biscuitchris7again

This is a balk. He gets into his crouch to take signs (you should stand up straight and not contort yourself to take signs, just to prevent this mishap.), but in the process of stepping off to reposition, which is legal, he goes into a motion which appears to be his stretch (according to the umpire). During this "false stretch motion" is when he steps off, having never come set first. That's a balk. It's not a bad call, it's just a bad mechanic. Had he just come set, then stepped off, he would have been fine. Had he not been bent over in such a way, he could have just stepped off. But the way his body is contorted at 1:06, all of his weight being on his bent knees, he has to stand up in order to step off, that motion of standing up is what the umpire took as his stretch.

@mattorey5816

It’s because he didn’t come set before making the move off the rubber. The way he disengaged the rubber ends up just looking like he’s coming set, except if the way he did it was allowed he would just become an infielder, but the runner on 2nd Is going to have a very difficult time telling is the pitchers foot is on the rubber because of the angle, so it becomes unfairly deceptive which is the whole point of the balk rule. Now in this case, it wasn’t meant to be deceptive, he was literally just trying to step off and reset but he still has to do it properly. The call was right, it just looks stupid because anytime a balk is called on a play that has nothing to do with tricking a runner it looks stupid. Plus there’s the old saying, every pickoff move is a balk that just hasn’t been called yet.

Absolutely a balk. The motion in the two clips at 1:07 and 3:22 are exactly the same. If the pitcher wants to step off, he needs to begin to disengage his pivot foot first, not do it in the middle of the stretch. Here's the relevant portion of the rule for using the stretch to come set: "Preparatory to coming to a set position, the pitcher shall have one hand on his side; from this position he shall go to his set position as defined in Rule 5.07(a)(2) without interruption and in one continuous motion." What the pitch did is a classic "started and stopped". Can we all agree to just reword the balk rule to "make a forward move to home & then go back to a resting position, or a set position, or attempt to make a move to any other base?" It would be so much easier. Football does a good job of having specific rules, the refs just suck. Baseball has fairly obscure rules with better umps to be honest. I think both sports could learn from each other. Hockey however has the best refs - it's rare you watch a hockey game and go "WHAT A TERRIBLE CALL!!!" "STUPID RULE!!!"

I thought that motion of him leaning in towards the plate, to see better, constituted the forward motion. It feels like he was going forward then retracted. I could see a balk being called. But then, don’t they have the replay? Have them challenge the ruling.

@@neftalimora4650 Replay doesn't work on balks. There are specific criteria you can ask for a review. It's sort of stupid. I think they did that on purpose because they know some of the rules can be "interpreted" differently.

Jomboy, the balk was called becuase his normal motion is to start low and stand up to come set. He started low, then started to stand up as he stepped off. That is a change in his delivery which is a balk. If he had stood up and come set or just stepped off without starting to stand up he would have been fine.
@sethbrouwer2008
@sethbrouwer2008 3 жыл бұрын
Since the motion technically also brings him to a his set position it’s was a balk because you cannot start going to your set position then stop. If he had stayed down and then stepped of then he would have been fine but since he started towards his set position it is a balk.

The "start-stop" is while he's going into his set. You can disengage while you're in the stretch OR while you're in your set, but you can't stop and disengage while you're moving into the set. That's a start-stop.

That was a balk. Excellent call. Pitcher motion is what was called. Thats how he starts his pitching. He needed to step off completely before he moved up with his body.

Balk Rules You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that. 1a. A balk is when you 1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the 1c. Let me start over 1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that. 1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that. 1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense? 1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it. 1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about. 1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X. 1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse. 1c-b(2)-b(ii). "get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic... 1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of Do not do a balk please

Or, instead of being clever, you could just learn the balk rules. You're like every 80's comedian who riffed on how they couldn't get the clock on their VCR to stop flashing "12:00". Here's a hot tip: read the manual.

The delay/missing frames is due to the pitch tracking system/overlay, not something that it intentionally added. Often switching to that camera triggers a change in the delay in the audio console of the effects mics on the field, to make sure that everything lines up. 5 frames (if that’s accurate) is only 1/12 of a second, so it’s not huge but it’s enough to feel a touch off in those plays.
