i feel as though not drawing for extensive periods of time is almost a key feature in most artist's personalities. it's not bad to take a break from things, especially if you're stressed or dealing with a million other things at the same time. what signifies true love and passion for art is one's ability to always go back to it.

I would also argue that because something is your passion, doesn't mean you need to make a career out of it. Sometimes that doesn't make financial sense. Some people will find much more happiness doing their passion as a hobby rather than to pay the bills. For me, drawing for myself and doodling when stressed became my way to find comfort and relaxation.. I realized I didn't need to do it for anyone else at all. It could be something I could never show anyone else, but just being able to see my imagination drawn out in front of me would make me smile, and that was all I needed. A vehicle to get ideas out of my head and into the real world so I could work through them more. And just the exercise itself was such a stress relief.

This one cut deep for me. It seems like I make more excuses not to draw especially lately. Social media isn't helping us artists in my opinion. It's just another distraction. But I guess that's only if you let it be. Awesome video as usual!
@Scarshadow666Ай бұрын
True - and even as someone that minimizes the amount of social media I have/uses only YT - it's easy to get sucked into watching a lot of videos (even if they're tutorial videos) instead of putting what some videos talk about into practice. Social media also, unfortunately, makes it easier for artists to make unfair comparisons with themselves and other artists too (especially since chasing after algorithm standards can burn out artists).

I’ve always loved animals since I was a kid, I wanted to be a zoo keeper haha, but now I’m a 3d artist in games making monsters and bosses! It’s great but I still have to work from a concept and i found out a year in that my true passion is actually creature design. I think I am getting pretty good at it now after a couple of years from self learning. But I am still at the same job as a senior and have no idea how to switch career into a concept artist or even better, sell my own original IP designs for a living. Life is hard since my health is declining a bit too, but I’m still going strong, I will keep designing in my free time after work and one day I will make this dream a reality!

This video has really opened my eyes, I struggle with trying to perfect anything I draw and I give up if it's not up to my expectations. Sometimes I forget my problems are only temporary and I get so caught up degrading myself for taking a break longer than I want it like about 2-4 weeks or even a month. It's hard having a clear head about art but I've been drawing as long as I can remember and I have to remind myself how far I've come.

Came out the gate swinging with this hot take! It’s good, really, but it’s a little too straight forward. Which in itself is the best way to get your life together for the simple task of doing what you love. A lot of people - myself included - do either one of two things. One is to hyper fixate on not being able to draw the perfect image, so putting pencil to paper feels like a waste. Even though that’s the only way to get better. Another is a more niche aspect of being afraid of everything. Soooooome, haha, people… really can’t bear to look at even the most mundane things in life without being afraid. Like everything is going to go wrong, and you don’t want to look at the bomb going off. With art, it’s to be avoidant as to not fail. Anyhow, there’s just too much brain stuff going on. That’s why you have a good take - one that can’t be related to all that much. Except maybe by people who’ve grown up in the eighties, you remind me of my brother to a degree. Could be a social phenomenon with us spazzes.

I have trouble facing mistakes/taking the first step. Because I know it won't look as good as I'd wish, and then I get discouraged and stop because it's not fun. I have done drawings I think were good, but they just seemed to happen with little effort, kind of randomly and the key thing is I would have fun doing it and lose track of everything else around me. Trying to get back into it and find that spark I had when I first got interested in drawing, and you're a great inspiration I have to say. Your detail in drawings and artstyle is 'relatable' in a sense.

For me personally my motivation has slowly dropped over the years due to the overall status of the game and film industries. I lOVE Art and Design...I love to sketch and render monsters, props, environments etc...but all of that hard work has gone unseen by Pros who are already established in the industry, and definitely not seen by the larger companies/corporations. It seems like in general these companies don't want or need Artists anymore, and if they do, they already have a small established few to choose from. Recently I've been seeing some Artists upload their Production work fro Alien Romulus and I'm just like damn, how did they get those connections to work on a huge production like that?

I don't know if this is the kind of answer you are hoping for, but I felt the same way when I started learning to draw. My conclusion is that I just want to make stuff purely for my own personal enjoyment and self expression. If I make money, cool, but I just want to make things.
@Scarshadow666Ай бұрын
@@kingofthemoon3063 My thoughts as well! For making my art/drawings, I turn to making it more out of personal enjoyment than out of monetary reasons (though it's not a dig at other artists that are able to monetize/popularize their art, because it's definitely something amazing to get considering how the industry and Internet are like). It has made me wary to post my art online though, as sadly those high industry standards can extend to the Internet and I've heard of plenty of artists that have had their enjoyment of art ruined from uploading online.

"Don't draw to impress other people." Ouch, that hurts but it's exactly what I've been struggling with recently! I let the pressure to improve and become a pro let me forget about drawing for myself, and only focused on drawing as a means of impressing a potential employer (or during University, my teachers). Didn't really make me better, it just turned me into a perfectionist. 😅 I'm finally starting to get over myself and focus on drawing work I want to and not what I think will get me a job, and I'm already liking what I made way more even if my skills haven't necessarily improved.

"U just have to want it enough" is definitely not true in my opinion. Because people in arts in particular often suffer from neurodiverse disorders. Here, "wanting" can even become a problem, because the more you really want something, the greater the inhibition to actually do it becomes. But the point that u should never try to be creative for other people when u are in a phase like that is VERY true. That means, never think "what might other people think would be cool". It is best not to ask the question "what would be cool" at all. U have to start first. U have to get into the flow. Once u are in it, THEN u can try to steer it. But steering first and then driving off doesn't work.
