Well as a professional pipe welder and fabricator, and a certified welding inspector, I can honestly say this looks pretty damn good so far (half way through the video now). I like your ideas for the pipe pass thru on the hood. The stock exhaust kicks up so much dust! I have a new BX 2680, and I was just considering what I have to do. I like the idea of stubbing up (@1" or so?) thru the hood into a larger hole, maybe about 2" to 2-1/2" or so, and the larger exhaust vent pipe being bolted to the hood sounds like a decent idea, I have seen similar set-ups. The exhaust velocity should be enough to set up a venturi effect so all the heat and exhaust goes straight up the exterior stack. I would think that maybe adding another rib (riveted in and made of sheet metal to match existing hood rib) and box the exhaust opening in the hood on three sides, and the hood stack can be 2-1/2" or 3" stainless thin wall tubing and a flange of sorts to mate up with the hood, and bolts in. Add flapper, of course. Yup I like this! Of course, you can always go the easy route and stay with the removable pipe, for those who don't have the tig welding skills or a friend who can make the outer piece for you. I see nothing wrong with that way, either. I will look to see how you finished this mod.
@BiffsEquipment3 жыл бұрын
Hey Clayton thanks for your comment! Its great to hear from a professional in the field and I'm glad you liked and understood my ideas as many others didn't.. I got lots of comments people saying they didn't like it and I understand its not for everyone.. I more so did this for the fun of it to see if it could be done but also did it because of the dust it would kick up as you mentioned as well as the soot getting all over my loader frame which drove me nuts to try and keep clean. I still need to finish the stack pipe as I haven't had time to get back to it yet. I still need to add the flapper which I purchased but never installed and still have to finish the exhaust coming through the hood.. I should have made the hole in the hood larger, I wish I had made it maybe 3" or so as there wasn't enough clearance to stub a piece through and still be able to open and close the hood so for now its sort of half finished and has been that way ever since.. The stack has been great though.. no more soot on my loader frame, and I also love it because I can not only hear what the engine is doing but can now SEE what its doing too as I often watch the stack for smoke when working the tractor hard.. Unlike what many people think I never get soot in my face and never smell it either.. I never get smoke blown in my face. Check out my other welding videos.. Go to the "playlist" tab on my KZbin page and you'll see I have a "welding and fabricating" playlist of all the items and implements I have Created and welded from scratch. Knowing now what you do for a living I think you'll really enjoy them. Thanks for watching and best of luck with your own stack project!

@@BiffsEquipment You are welcome! And thank you. I was looking at a lot of your stuff lately, I like your channel, so I subbed. I wasn't going to say directly, but it did appear that your hole through the hood might not be large enough. Or better yet, elongated. As a matter for reference, you can make a slot with a hole saw, especially on thin material, by overlapping the holes. You can either clamp the material to a wood board large enough, and then lay out your slot as two overlapping holes. mark the centers. Here's another trick also: drill all your 1/4" pilot holes FIRST with a cheaper normal 1/4" drill bit. Then come back and use the hole saw. you can even use a piece of 1/4" cold roll as the centering "bit" if you need to, or to save from snapping the pilot bit as they are expensive compared to the normal bits. Then hole saw out the sheet metal. If you can't get a board to clamp to it, lay it out, drill both pilot holes, and then when you use your hole saw, use it at a slight angle to cut only the "end" of the slot and the "sides", and NOT cut the hole completely out. Repeat for the other end. Then you can use tin snips or a grinder with a cut off disc and trim the straight sides of the slot. Clean up with a file or Dremel. This is of course if the holes overlap, you cut only about 3/4 of the hole so the slug stays attached and the other center pilot hole is there to use. If the holes don't overlap where one cuts out the other's pilot hole, then no issues at all. Be careful, go slow. I am glad that your mod is working for you, albeit that it remains to be "finished". You can also take a piece of tin and rivet it to the hood with 2 small rivets, and then you have another place to drill again, and end up with a slot. The rivets will come out with the new hole. Then you still have to figure out the stack and attach to the hood, but it can be made of thin wall tubing, or rolled sheet metal possibly? The real challenge is the base or flange to attach it to the hood... OR, .... don't make it a slot, go a bit bigger with the tubing for the stack (2.5"?, 3" max i would think), and completely through the hood. You can add a flange to it (rivets or tig welded, or even turn your mig welder down and just slowly spot weld it around, evenly like tightening a tire, on both sides so it warps the least amount), and then rivet or bolt it (maybe have a back up ring for strength) to the hood. Thin wall tubing or sheet metal will work because you need to have it light enough that it doesn't buckle the hood. Its only directing the exhaust at that point, and it won't get overly hot like the actual exhaust pipe will. I would still consider forming some kind of reinforcing truss or ridge to go across the hood behind the stack and then box the side to the middle and your bolts or rivets go through the reinforcement ribs on three sides (the front is there already, factory hood rib). When the hood is closed, the exhaust pipe sticks up inside it, to the front of the pipe. As the hood is raised the extra room to the rear on the inside allows the stack to clear the top of the exhaust pipe. You can trim out with a sheet metal nibbler or tin snips, or a Dremel, it will all get covered with the stack base anyways. ;) Hopefully some of this makes sense, and you will find the solution that is acceptable to you. My GF said she wants a stack, but she isn't wild about cutting into HER new shiny tractor hood... lols. Can always add a mod to use the stock exhaust into a stack, and cut the plastic at the bottom and maybe only have to add small angle reinforcement to the slot and hole around the side outlet into the stack. Many ways to make this work!

Lottsa pain, no gain. I grew up with the exhaust pipe in my central vision. When i saw that Kubota installed the engine backwards so fresh air enters between your legs and engine heat blows the other way. Pure genius ! the fan blows the smoke away with the exhaust.
@BiffsEquipment2 жыл бұрын
Hey man that’s actually a great thought! Everyone always asked me “now do you have smoke blowing in your face??” And I always told them no, I don’t even smell it most the time.. the only time I may get a small puff in my direction is if I’m heading straight towards a vert strong wind and even then it pretty much all goes above my head. I never thought how with the radiator/engine facing backwards how it prolly helps with the exhaust blowing the opposite way as the operator. All I know is I did this mod years ago now and it’s still on my tractor and I still love it. I love being able to see what the engine is doing and when I’m lugging or loading it down.. specially when I’m wearing my headphones cuz I can just watch for the smoke and know how hard I’m working it.. IMO the more ways you can be connected to your machine the better you’ll operate it. Thanks for watching!

Also the exhaust has never ONCE blocked my vision.. I have never once felt myself needing to look around the pipe.. @BiffsEquipment4 жыл бұрын
Hey mike, I did this mainly just to see if it was possible.. because nobody had ever done it before and I wanted to see it done. Also I did it to remove the heavy soot that was blowing all over my loader frame as it drove me crazy and also wanted my tractor to sound a little louder as well. It now has a good sound to it; it’s louder but not too loud...as for what you want to do, they do sell exhaust turn down pipes for your bx, it will just slide over your existing exit pipe and you can then turn the pipe in such a way that it’s not going where you don’t want it to go, you then just clamp it into place.. you could also easily make your own with a sleeve or pipe that’s only a touch larger than your current exit pipe and then just clamp it into place.. you shouldn’t need a welder for that. I have seen others do it this way and it works just fine.. just search for it on google/KZbin. Hope this helps

Hey Jeff, I ended up painting the exhaust stack black off camera a few months after I made this video as I felt the black pipe looked better. As for the bungee I have on my stack I have to have it there to keep the pipe from vibrating because I never finished it 100%. I plan to change my exhaust system up tho again this summer with another upgrade I have planned so stay tuned !
@BiffsEquipment2 жыл бұрын
The bungee just basically puts down pressure on the pipe and holds it securely into the muffler so it doesn’t vibrate and make noise. At first it was fine but after a few months of use the pipe got loose in the muffler and started to rattle this is why I added the bungee

Hope this helps!

I'd just like to know why?? Kubota engineers placed the exhaust where it is for a reason. NOw you've gone back to the 50's and the exhaust is blowing in your face.
@BiffsEquipment2 жыл бұрын
I explained in the video before this one and a little bit in this video also why I chose to do it, I chose to do it because it had never been done before and because I like a challenge. I thought it would be fun to try and it sure was. As to Kubotas engineering, the factory exhaust pipe came out from the bottom of the hood Bonnet which would constantly blow soot all over my loader frame, I mean to the point where the loader frame was BLACK in a matter of weeks.. it was very hard to clean off too and got in all the nooks of the loader stand and it’s mechanism .. it would make it a mess. I no longer have soot all over my loader, I only get soot on my hood sometimes if I get moisture in the exhaust stack which isn’t often but when that happens it can easily be wiped off with a dry rag and doesn’t stick to the paint like it would when it would blow on the loader frame. (Thus it happens much less now and is MUCH easier to wipe the soot off when it happens). The stack pipe I added does not blow in my face, it never once has blown into my face, if it did then I would simply add a short elbow off the end of the stack and the problem is solved. Third reason why I added the stack is because I can now keep an eye on my exhaust to physically see what my engine is doing and how hard it’s lugging when I’m working the crap out of my tractor, this is especially nice when I have my 3M headphones on as I no longer need to hear the engine to know how hard I’m lugging the engine. Fourth, i did it cuz its different and makes my tractor unique. Fifth reason is because I felt the exhaust was too quite and wanted it to sound meaner, building my own stack allowed me to drill holes in the baffle to not only make it slightly deeper pitched but to also allow for slightly more exhaust flow as well. I can keep going if you need more reasons just let me know. 👍🏻

Hey Jason, are you referring to the suicide knob or “wheel spinner”? How you doing David. It’s actually not a bother at all.. I almost never smell diesel, it never blows in my face, and I can hear better of what the engine is doing when under load. It’s also not in my way as far as vision goes either.. but someone else could think the total opposite, that’s just my option with it so far. Thanks for watching!

@@BiffsEquipment I appreciate the beauty of a stak exhaust, and even more the ability that not enough people have to listen to the engine.👍 Cheers from Belgium.

A ridiculous mod. You want your tractor to be louder. You probably want it to be bigger and do more as well. You should have bought a real tractor. Have fun playing with your toy tractor.

Thanks Garry your comment made me laugh. You completely missed the whole point of why I did it which was for the fun of fabricating it and seeing if it could actually work. I no longer have soot on my loader frame, The tractor DOES sound better, and I'm completely happy with my little Kubota BX as its just the right size for the type of jobs I do. (If I wanted a larger tractor, id have one.) Go watch my other videos and check out how much work I accomplish with my "toy" tractor, while keeping costs low.

Hey Biff, great mod! You are a brave man (and pretty sharp too) to punch a hole in the hood of your (real) subcompact tractor. As I mentioned in a comment on another video, I have a B2601 coming in a few days and I have already been thinking about rerouting the exhaust but I am not brave enough to do what you have done! I like it though! It looks like you could use two things, a little larger shed door and a new(er) pair of work pants... good thing with those, I guess, you are probably not too likely to wipe greasy hands on your thighs! Personally, I wouldn't have even acknowledged Garry Talley. Who knows, he may have been having a bad day, might just be ornery. Either way, it's your (real) tractor and your video, he didn't have to watch it! Have a great day, and keep up the good work!

@@domenicmaiani3795 Thanks man means a lot.. Yah its not the first time Garry has said negative comments on my videos, iv got him and about 3 others out of well over 1,000 subscribers who only have bad things to say so I'm alright with it.. You cant please everyone.. But that's exactly it.. its like, if you don't like it then why watch it? Go find something you enjoy watching more then and stop pestering me and my channel. I get it not everyone likes the same things and that's what makes KZbin so great, there is literally a channel out there for everyone. PS. The shed doors are much much larger now, if you watch some of my newest videos you'll see I cut the doorway out and built much larger doors for my shed, I have a video somewhere too explaining what I used and how I did it. And yah, I need to start spending more money on pants and less on toys but let me tell ya, that's hard to do! Haha. Thanks again man! Be sure to let me know how you like your new tractor! I'm sure your stoked!!
