When I first watched The Wickerman about 12 years ago, I hated the music, thinking it was corny and whack AF! I also had a very narrow view of music at the time, listening mostly to hip hop, techno dance, metal and metal fusions, and some punk/goth. I last watched The Wickerman less than a year ago after I started turning middle-aged and my music tastes reflect aging, meaning I'm mellowing out and respect/embrace more folksy type music now. So, yeah, I can appreciate the music more now than when I was in my late 30s. Take note, the music while not necessary, plays a role in the Pagan culture of Summer Isle. These people have built a community of a nature based religion (kind of like Wicca), and the music shows Pagan embrace of concepts of the cycle of life, balance (think yin-yang, only Westernized), agriculture, and sexuality/procreation (sexuality is more heavily emphasized in Pagan religions than Abrahamic religions). For the record, I'm not Pagan. I'm agnostic. But that doesn't mean I don't find history and culture not my own fascinating.

(15:44) “They picked him because of his blood link to the island.” “So why not use one of those other men on the island?” Well, they don’t have the same blood link as Edward does. Also Sister Summersisle mentions, “We offer a stranger, yet one who is connected to us.” I guess the other men on the island live on the island, so they aren’t strangers, so it makes Edwards blood connection to the island more special.

Out of all the bad remakes you've booted, this one is the one I'm most grateful for. The original Wicker Man is one of my favorite films, and not just because I'm a pagan who would have been happily singing along with the rest of the Summerisle islanders as they send the Xtian cop up in smoke. I was given the remake as an Xmess present, and after one watching, I took my boot to the DVD. Nice to see I'm not the only one who did that.

Tbh, the goofy music elevated the children singing along with Randy, there. Not only are these completely unhinged sociopaths alien to humanity as a whole, but they were born and raised to be that way to the point where we think of them as comical. The real horror comes from the alien culture refusing to assimilate, not because they're of malicious intent (they see themselves as doing the right by killing Edward as a sacrifice), but simply because they wish to preserve their culture in peace and live in harmony. Terrifying.

The music in the original helped to solidify the culture and the beliefs of the people of Summerisle for me. A staple of a culture is the music. It’s usually Music, Language, and Beliefs. Art and Cuisine come later. So the fact that Summerisle had its own plethora of songs demonstrated just how ingrained their culture is. It’s been there for a long time

Recently, I recognize two actors from A Series of Unfortunate Events, Jacqueline and Joyce Robbins, twins in this movie. They claimed that the mood on the set of this movie was very relaxed. Apparently their makeup artist was going from this movie to X-Men and back, saying this movie had a very chill atmosphere. Additionally, Nicholas Cage's wife was pregnant at the time and the actor joked that he hadn't been around so much estrogen in his life. I guess that's something positive for the crummy movie that it was

I think one of the worst aspects of the remake is the overall presentation of the Pagan colony. In the original, they were presented as having strange beliefs but were otherwise normal, happy people on a sunny, beautiful island. The juxtaposition of the bright colors, cheerful inhabitants, and merry music to the townfolk's suspicious behavior and the missing girl's plight really created a sense of underlying dread. The remake, however, tries way too hard to be scary and off-putting.

I have this film, but, so far, I've never been bored enough to watch it. I've been really bored, but never THAT bored and, after watching your vid, I don't think I ever will be. WTF honey crop failed? two reasons: failure of nectar-producing crops reducing available supplies or hive infestation decreasing bee numbers. how is either going to be cured by murder? [I know, apples won't grow because a man's been killed, either, but at least that's a single annual event; flowers grow over a season and honey is produced over a season] Another tie-in to the original: Malus is the Latin word for apple
