Master Sommelier Michael Meagher explains the history and contemporary status of wine classifications in Bordeaux. With some 120,000 hectares of vines, Bordeaux is the largest fine wine producing region in the world and home to a host of classification systems. Beginning with the 1855 Classification of the Médoc ordered by Napoleon III in advance of the Paris World Exposition, Meagher continues with the classifications of Graves, of the right bank Saint-Émilion, of the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc and of the Cru Artisan classification designed to give recognition to smaller scale wine producers.
