Honestly I very athletic but lazy so I see this as a win. In my days I have no activity to do due to not really having friends. So "teaching me to roll over" and get out of bed to walk or play would be a benefit to both of us. Been doing my research on this breed because it is my favorite breed.

@@scrumbfunk just read this comment from over a month ago....that means you've had you pup for about 5 weeks.... How's it going? Are you exhausted at the end of the day just trying to keep her out of stuff and destroying things? When my 14+ BC was a pup, she had a knack for getting into trouble if she didn't get enough exercise. She slept under our bed and got bored one night and we woke up to hearing her ripping the wallpaper off the wall (we wanted to eventually remove it anyway). Tore the binding off a book in the bookcase when she got big enough to reach it. Stuff usually happened when we were sleeping so I learned to take her out for a run right before bed so she'd sleep all night. She eventually grew out of the destructive phase but man did she keep us on our toes till then. But it was fun! I hope things are going well for you and your puppy! Too many BCs end up getting put into the rescue system because they are more work than people think. But they are so worth it. Get through the puppy phase and training phase and I promise you, your BC will be the best dog you'll ever have!!

We had a 17 year old border collie, she was insanely intelligent. If you felt like crap she would come over and pester us until we cheered up. We had to put her down a few weeks ago due to heart failure. She had puppies and we kept one, but we had to put that one down at 15 because of cancer.

wait border collies can live up to 17 years?! i thought only 12-15!
@revengenerd12 жыл бұрын
Ours lasted till 15, I grew up with her from 12 until I was 25 (she was a rescue dog so just turned 2 when we got her) if you pretended to cry she would nudge you and then jump up and lick you, if you still continued she started whimpering and then nudge you more. If we ever gave her bones she would keep pieces and put them under your bed pillow, if somene showed agression to you she would circle them and bark, if she was cleaning herself and you put your hand near her she would lick and nibble your hand clean, she died of kidney failure and it was one of the few times in my life I saw my dad cry, over a decade later we still speak of her with loving memories. My parents did get another border collie a few years later and shes sweet in her own way and very loving, the 1st time I went to their home after they got her she growled at me for a few minutes until she relaxed around me, now when she sees me she whines and runs up to me and jumps up and licks me, and likes to sleep on sofa beside me.

Any training tips?
@issiecottrill84193 жыл бұрын
@@awkward_smile._. Just be patient and make sure that your border collie gets enough exercise! Also make sure that you train them ASAP, so that they adjust and learn the rules while their brain is still young! Also when you are training them to sit, lay down, etc, use the word YES when they do it correctly, and NO when the do it incorrectly. Avoid using “good girl” because that phrase is said too often, and the may not connect “good girl” with doing something correct, rather than just being cute. (Sorry if that’s as confusing I’m not a great explainer!) Also, for their crate, I found that using scrap blankets to cushion, rather than a big pillow is much more beneficial. Blankets are much easier to wash, especially during their puppy stage. I found my blankets at Lens Mill Store. They were very inexpensive! My dog barely sheds, but if yours does, I advise brushing them once a week!

My 14+ yr old BC was quite a handful when she was young. She required intense activity 3 times a day (4 during the longer days of summer) just for us to keep our sanity. Approx an hour each time. If weather prevented it, she would occupy her time by dropping a ball down the basement stairs, watch it bounce all the way down then run down to get it....for hours. Her arthritis started getting bad a few years back and now she has cancer, so she sleeps most of the day. She was a mix and I think she must have greyhound in her cause omg she was fast. I miss watching her run and I can see it in her eyes somedays that she misses it too.
@revengenerd12 жыл бұрын
Ours had arthritis too and sadly died of kidney failure at 15, and she was fast until her final year where she started to struggle to get into the car or into bath, and sometimes if she wanted a cuddle. My parents 2nd is now almost 12 and shows no sign of slowing down, she is getting more lazy with time though but still wakes them around 7am each day.

She learned to give paw, sit and stay after some training. I make sure I walk her at least once a day, mostly twice a day. She has took to our family life and absolutely loves playing fetch. Despite my worries about her being energetic and now settling in our family but she is absolutely brilliant. Loves to play and is very obedient. I had to put and still do alot of time in to train her, walk her and now she is a brilliant dog. I couldn't recommend collies enough but as long as you are willing to put some time in.

Pros of a border collie: Everything Cons: nothing
@alphalunamare3 жыл бұрын
I have had four collies in the past and each has had his/her own personality and have been wonderful. I picked up my 'Buddy' before he hit the rescue farm and bloody hell did he surprise me. Ate the legs off of my furniture and terrorised all the cushions. Phew I thought what is this all about. He was manic and aggressive and nothing like a dog that I had had before. Everything he did was a dare ! Well perhaps the best thing I did was to keep my hands behind my back. He would jump right into my face and I'd just smile into his eyes ... he never once even tried to bite my nose. I did think oh shit, once in a while, but he grew out of the confrontation. It takes time with a Collie. Sure as hell don't tell him off or get angry because that negative energy is just pure destructive. He was so different to the other hounds that I had had that I took a DNA test for him, wondering if he was half wolf or something. It cam back Border Collie x Border Collie for 5 generations, not a spot of anything other. He is a Pedigree Border Collie even if a pain in the arse. So anyway, 18 months later I think he likes me. I sat down on the field yesterday whilst he was 100 yards away on cool grass after chasing the ball. He suddenly got up and came over and sat down beside me, and leaned on me as he panted off the heat from the earlier runs. It was really touching, not many folks like me to be honest and having him sit next to me was like not having to sit on my own table. I don't train him as such, I just tend to work with his natural tendencies and throw the ball where I know he is going to go etc. Folk's think he is well trained because I have learnt to work with him. What blessed irony that is :-) I loved this video :-)

@ranger23163 жыл бұрын
@@seandiaz5504 We do a 1 mile loop around our subdivision every day and let him run off some steam in the fenced back yard a couple of times a day. That seems to be enough for him. BC's and Aussie's make wonderful, loyal pets ... they really are NO trouble.
@TheEickert3 жыл бұрын
@@ranger2316 I think it is unrealistic to say they are no trouble. Owners need to know how to socialize and train them, otherwise they will herd and drive off other dogs and small children, even other adults outside the family. They tend to chase things and are very prey driven, so training with bicycles, roads, cars, cats and other pets is crucial. In fact, they can be a lot of trouble to the inexperienced owner.

@@TheEickert True ... so can ANY dog!
@TheEickert3 жыл бұрын
@@ranger2316 I would argue that border collies display these behaviors more intensely than many other breeds, because they are bred for their work ethic and intelligence. Many other popular breeds are bred for a look, but BCs are bred for a personality. And I'm not saying that they aren't wonderful and way easier in other ways than other popular breeds. But it is unrealistic to represent this as a breed without its own quirks, and the exercise requirement is the least of it from my experience.

Yes they are very smart, she learned tricks in 5 mins she listens and is obedient. I live in a decent sized house with a big backyard and it still isn’t enough for my border collie, so please please don’t get one unless you live on a farm. If you don’t drain that energy with 3+ hours of INTENSE exercise they chew and destroy and get into everything. 85% of border collie owners return or rehome their pups in the first 18 months of getting them because people don’t realize how difficult it is to own one.

I really want a border collie puppy to train and take care of. I am homeschooled and we go hiking and running a lot. I have also had many experiences with puppies as my mom used to breed Shipoos. I am currently volunteering to train service dogs. Would it be a good idea to get a puppy? I have done TONS of research on this breed.

Walking the dog can be your PE mabye?

“Hiking alot “ how often .? I need to walk my BC at least twice a day plus 30-40 minutes minimum of mental games . The breed deserves that and if you can deliver this it’s the right breed for you. Collies and Aussie blue heelers can run 70kms a day full on working here in Australia

A hard run for 30min minimum a day. They can run themselves to death like horses if you convince them.

Anyone here have advice on getting a collie because I'm scared of how much they would need to exercise and what they would do if they didn't get enough
@MonacoMcLaren3 жыл бұрын
I have had 4 Border Collie's they are great. They love structured routine so they can understand what's happening next. If you give them a short play time (chasing the ball) in the morning and a walk at the end of the day they should be happy.

My soon to be ex-girlfriend has a border collie and she never takes it for a walk longer than it needs to relive herself. She’s antisocial and thus the dog never socializes. When I take her for a jog she’ll growl at other animals because she wasn’t socialized. The dog is perpetually anxious, she paces around the apartment and always looks like she’s on edge. My girlfriend suffers from PTSD and anxiety/depression and I think the dog almost absorbs her owners emotions….the dog is pretty obese too. That’s the first thing I noticed when I was introduced to the dog…. I explained she’s not just “fluffy”’because you can’t feel any ribs or see any belly tuck. I take her for a long walk and/jog every time she’s over at my apartment but’s that’s only 1x maybe 2x a week and she loves it. But when I break up with her owner, the dog is never going to get out and it makes me really, really sad… I’ve tried to get my girlfriend to read articles talking about the needs of border collies but she thinks “it’s just the way she is”
