This makes me miss our late Golden Retriever so much. Both my mom and Sister got diagnosed with cancer a few years spart and cruel fate hsppened to have me abroad during both times. My father was having a hard time dealing with having to be the one supporting them, but he told me that our Golden would sense when either one of them would have some hard times and came over to comfort them. Both mom, sis and dad are fine now, but unfortunately we did loose our Golden angel that supported our whole family during those though times.

If only people measured up to the example they set for their humans....we are on our third; Cody, Jaggers, and now our first girl, Tula. We have the ashes of the first two and someday hopefully my ashes will be spread with theirs, it would be an honor. When our last Golden was put down all 3 of my children, their signifivant others, my wife and I were there; it was very sad, but he was 12 and it was his time. At the vets they understood we all needed to have time to say goodbye. At his time to leave ,his last act of incredible kindness and timing was to walk around the room and visit with each of us separately, it was an incredible act of loyalty and kindness I would not believe happened except for the fact I saw it with my own eyes. I still can see his loving eyes staring back when the vet finally gave him his last shot....what a dog!!!! Jaggers and Cody RIP, but Tula is doing you both proud and soon, at 8 years old, she will be training our next Golden puppy to be a great dog. These 3 wonderful dogs have graced our family for the last 34 years of our life and that life was enriched every day we shared time with them! I love nearly all dogs, but Goldens and especially those I call family, will always own my heart and my soul. If there is an after life may I be worthy of coming back as a Golden Retriever and the pet of a family that values my presence and a warm and safe place I can call home! All dogs deserve that but maybe none more so than Golden Retrievers!!!!

10:10 VERY TRUE My aunt has a golden and when I was younger whenever we went to her house the golden retriever would always just sit on me. One con is that Golden Retrievers are one of the top three breeds in terms of cancer. Look it up. There are special studies and a registry trying to find out why. We lost our two Goldens in 2017. Didn't think I would survive. Ad long as you know what you're in for...
@carstereo24933 жыл бұрын
Sorry, there are no disadvantages to owning a Golden. They are the best.
@12fishcake3 жыл бұрын
This video is very accurate! They're wonderful family dogs with little to no downsides (we've had 3 as I was growing up) and they have the most docile and friendly temperaments, I never once saw one behave aggressively or cause deliberate harm and are indeed very smart (for the most part... our last one was very dopey but loveable!). Honestly I'd recommend one to anyone as long as you have the space and the time to provide enough exercise, a good size garden is a must I would say, which is the only reason I don't have another one right now. The "cons" are all very minor but as with any dog, certainly worth having an understanding of as an owner. They do like to chew (get them some toys to gnaw on!) and will 100% want to roll in everything they find out and about (even dead foxes and poop) they will leap in ponds and muddy tracks happily and they all love to dig, but can be trained out of it for the most part. They also do indeed shed a LOT, our last retriever had very long hair (even for a golden!) and a thick fluffy "mane" at the front - when she was malting you could pull fistfuls of hair from the front and it would just keep going! Definitely correct about black clothing and brushing them outside! Also the point about health conditions is very true, two of the three retrievers we had as I was growing up developed arthritis/joint problems, one was manageable with the help of our vet but our last one got it pretty bad in her back legs as she got older and sadly had to be put down because of it (would've caused her more pain to ignore it). I know it can be upsetting to hear about these things and it's certainly no reason to avoid getting one but worth being aware of.

I loved all of mine. The most interesting common trait I found was their lack of interest in balls. Throw a ball and they’ll look at you as if to say “What? You want me to get that. You threw it, you go get it.” 🤣
@FullMetalMassacre3 жыл бұрын
Oh man, absolute opposite for mine! She hyper fixated on her ball!
@Tharrel3 жыл бұрын
Must have been something about the way you trained them, as that breed was created specifically to fetch.
@Erin-Thor3 жыл бұрын
@@Tharrel - Well, you may be right. I learned early on that I liked an older female Golden that had already been bred. Sounds silly, but it calms them. IMHO, it also makes them highly trainable. All of mine with just gentle tugs on their leash reached a point where if I tapped my thigh, they would come right over and sit. If I called them, they would immediately come, often with comical results. You could walk them without leashes, and they were all incredibly obedient. But if I threw a ball… they’d just look at me like I was an idiot. So, by your example, you have proven them right… I am.

Think big oaf who's understanding of boundaries between you and them does not exist. That is their cons. Yet if you are okay dealing with that, it actually adds to their lovability too, because it adds to their quirkiness. Read up on housebreaking and basic training them beforehand, and stay consistent with it, you won't need a trainer. Besides that it is simple to care for them: -60 minutes total exercise, can be broken into 20 minute sessions & 5-10 minutes training (brisk walk, play/wrestling, dog park, hike, swim, fetch, some combo of various things - work in a 5 minute training session before one or 2 sessions-maybe after if they are too wound up at the start, they are very bright and working out their minds, as well as their body will cut back on destructive behavior greatly) -thorough brushing 2-3 times a week, along with checking for ticks, the long hair makes it easy to miss them -indoor toys should be mentally stimulating, if you have an area they can explore off leash, if you can give them 10 minutes or so a day to explore it will help - they are very bright and need their minds to be worked out -belly rubs, lots and lots of belly rubs -they will not guard your home, but they are very smart and will lead the robber to all your jewelry, electronics, defensive arms and cash for a mere belly rub

"Golden retrievers are not bred to be guard dogs, and considering the size of their hearts and their irrepressible joy in life, they are less likely to bite than to bark, less likely to bark than to lick a hand in greeting. In spite of their size, they think they are lap dogs, and in spite of being dogs, they think they are also human, and nearly every human they meet is judged to have the potential to be a boon companion who might, at many moment, cry, "Let's go!" and lead them on a great adventure." ~ Dean Koontz

My Golden is on his way to 11, he still wants to play like there is no tomorrow. An additional info. Like the other retriever breeds, but especially the Golden: Because their main function is to retrieve prey (funnily enough), they can like a switch, get full on energetic and ecstatic and the next be totally at ease and relaxed. About their age. Most Medium sized dogs would be around 10-12, an unspoken rule is, that Goldens can reach 13-14 on avg, if you don’t count hip dysplasia and cancer, which they’re unfortunately prone to get. Therefore it’s utmost important not to let them climb stairs, until they’re a year old. That goes for every dogs really, but especially a Golden. Get gates on, if you’ve stairs in the house.
