It seems that the scariest villains on screen turn out to be the sweetest and kindest people. As an actor myself, I always marvel at the job he did in "Frankenstein." The most difficult acting of all is non-verbal acting, yet he infused this horrifying, lumbering creature with a sense of pathos and all-to human qualities that made you care about him as much as fear him. It was a performance for the ages, never to be duplicated. RIP.

I was four months short of my eleventh birthday when the great Karloff passed away. I remember waking up for school and not only hearing the news on the local morning talk show, but noticing how respectful the program host was. In fact, that particular morning show suspended its usual musical format and, instead, played recorded clips of Karloff's voice for the entire morning. His was the first death that impacted me; a month later, my grandfather died of cancer. When I went to school the morning of Karloff's death, my classmates spoke of his passing in a mocking way, and openly laughed at me when I broke into tears.

Another wonderful thing Boris did--and this was especially courageous--was helping to found the Screen Actors Guild. In the 1930's actors were treated like objects.There was more consideration payed to "the horse of a different color" in The Wizard of Oz than to human actors who were exposed to toxic make-ups or forced to do dangerous stunts. One of Boris' fellow actors called and told him the studio was planning to have the actors ski down a fake mountain--MADE OF GLASS. If an actor fell, he would be cut to pieces. When Boris heard that, he cursed one of the few times in his life. Somehow, he managed to stop it. But forming SAG was very risky. It was a UNION, and the studio bosses didn't like unions. The actors involved would have to meet in secret and park their cars far away to avoid detection from studio spies. But the SAG was founded with good Old Boris' help. A great human being.

19:00 is the best part of this show, Anchorage Alaska, amateur theater group. Boris Karloff giving all his percentage of the profits to them to help them build their own theater. I love that story and watch Karloff try to keep it quiet is classic.

Funny how in Hollywood the "Bad Guys" in the movies often ended up being good guys in real life. It was true of Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi and Vincent Price, all very sweet gentlemen. And Karloff never minded being type cast in Horror films. He said it became his "trademark" and got him steady work. After Frankenstein, he was always busy and in demand for horror or villain roles, and it lasted the rest of his life. .

@@irened. And you're still a loon who should be prosecuted but thankfully for you, you can't defame the dead. I hope you get what's coming to you, you lunatic. If you have proof, put it out for all to see - don't hide it behind your "invite only" blog. You won't though - cowards like you never do. You just waste your miserable lives eating your own liver because you have nothing and have to tear others down. Pretty sad for a guy who died in the 60's.

Karloff says around 16 minutes in that he only appeared in 3 Frankenstein movies but he's wrong, he appeared in 4. He played the awesomely mad scientist in House of Frankenstein!
@crissrudd45548 жыл бұрын
True although to his credit he probably was referring to how many times he played the Monster which was 3! :) I read somewhere that he referred to House of Frankenstein as a 'monster clambake' perhaps implying he didnt enjoy that film and perhaps here decided to discredit it.

I was just with Sara Karloff tonight--a mere 3 hours ago--and she still looks amazing! I'm shocked to see that she was on this show in 1957! She looks no older than her mid-50s! How is this possible!?

Yes, the broadway producers were lightly complaining that they had to pay his salary for four years…I wonder if they were also the ones who wouldn’t allow Boris to be released to make the film version of Arsenic and Old Lace? If they had released him, they might have been able to get the less expensive Raymond Massey down from Canada to play the role of Jonathan. I’m sure Boris would have been as magnetic in the film as he must have been onstage!

Although Raymond Massey did a good job in the film.

While he is being very polite, it doesn't seem that he was exactly thrilled to be singled out like this.

That is true. As far as I understand, Karloff really didn't like sharing his personal life.
