Bosnian Cuisine - Trying Traditional Dishes in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina Travel Video Transcript:
It is time for another food video here in Mostar. Yesterday when we went for a walk late at night we spotted this restaurant. it is right by the crooked bridge next to the river. it looked so cool and cozy. They have a fireplace and yeah we were like we need to come back. So we were in the area today just doing some sightseeing and it is right around lunch. We got hungry and we're like yeah let's eat here. So here we are. It is called Konoba Taurus.
The food has arrived at the table and we have this massive platter in front of us and it looks so good. So I'm just going to read off of the menu to let you know everything we got because it has all been served together. Yeah. And wow. Okay, so the first thing we ordered was the Mostarski Sahan which includes stuffed peppers (punjene paprike), stuffed courgettes (punjene tikvice) which I believe is that zucchini is that just a different word for zucchini? And stuffed onions (sogan dolma). And then aside from that we also asked for what else did we get? The Cufte. Kofte. Cufte? Something like that um which are the meatballs and then we also got something called Japrak which are the stuffed vine leaves. And oh man this is just like steaming in front of us can you and the aromas are tantalizing.
as you can probably tell it is time for dessert. We ordered two different ones. Let me tell you what they are.
So the first one I believe is called Hurmasica but I'm kind of whispering it so you know the locals won't hear me and be like haha she can't say it. Um and that is the coconut finger which I believe is this one.
And then the other one is called Smokvara. Smokvara? Okay. Something like that. And this one is the fig dessert. Yeah. So also we've got some tea. Oh yeah, we got chai. It is Sepak. I believe. It looks like a red berry. Yeah.
Never tried that before.
It is time for price point. So in local currency which by the way is called BAM. Bosnian Convertible Marka that came to 36 which is 21.40 US dollars or 18.40 Euros or 16.31 Great British Pounds. Alright look at you covering all of the currencies. Yeah. I thought that was uh a steal of a meal in terms of value. Wonderful. We got a one litre sparkling water which we didn't show you that enormous plate that included three mains. Uh complimentary bread, two desserts and two teas for that price. So yeah. It doesn't get too much better than that and with a setting like this and with a meal that was that filling and that satisfying highly recommend going there for sure.

I love this video, I hope more and more people come and visit this part of the world. South Eastern Europe has lots of amazing places to visit, food and culture that reflects it's history and geographic location between Middle East and Europe. Greetings from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

That's really great, guys! Don't think we'll make Mostar on this spring's trip but maybe 2020. I really love the way you guys dive into the local culture in a respectful way; just exactly our style too. Thanks for mentioning, too, the month and season. I'm using your videos to help plan a vacation to Adriatic Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, so it helps when you mention what season you're in, so I can pack accordingly. I don't comment on all your videos but have loved every one of them. Kindest regards!

Hi Sam and Audrey, as much as I love your videos and I’ve been watching them constantly, I just want to know if you could do us a favor, by getting more detailed when you describe the food? Like every time you took a bite, I was always expecting to know what is scent like, and how is the flavor, is it salty or spicy or meaty etc, but ended up quite disappointing as you skipped it.... that would be great if you could do that in your upcoming videos, we’d really appreciate that. That said, I enjoy your work and your efforts! So much love ❤️

Audrey, your pronunciation of all dishes is great. I do not know why people laughed to you. Ćufte and kofte are different dishes. As I know, Ćufte should be small meat balls, but kofte - it is turkish and arabian kind of bosnian Ćevapi. Kofte and Ćevapi is very similar dish. It is kind of sausages, just prepared a bit differently. Let me expose you a secret. Restaurant "Tima-Irma" is the best one here. 2nd place takes "Šadrvan", then "Rota", etc. You like sweets but you do not eat sugger with tea (čaj)? Hm ... Interesting. :) Our cuisine is amazing. Smokvara is my favourite traditional cake. It is prepared mostly by figs. In one of previous videos I realized they did not learn you in restaurant Šadrvan about whole process of serving Bosinan coffe. I regart because you did not come in Mostar to try Bosnian-Italian Ice cream (the best one is in "Dolce and Co")

Stuffed peppers, meat balls(fried battered?) with the mashed potato and rustic bread would have finished me off before desert. I liked the bustle and music in the background lending some ambiance. I know the background noise and activity sometimes is a little too much for you to shoot in, but sometimes when it looks like you have the place to yourselves I wonder if you are eating on off hours or the place might not be popular. Noisy locals are always a plus for me. You can always do voice overs if it gets out of hand. LOL.

Slavs that moved to Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia from 6th to 10th century came mostly from today's western Ukraine and Eastern Poland and mixed with local population. at least 1/3 of Bosnians show at least some ancestry from Ukraine.

@@Aboleo80 40% illyrian ancestry, 15% slav 20% teuton 15%celtic is basically the genetic mashup of Bosnia. The cabbage stuffed with meat and rice, peppers stuffed with meat and rice that all came from Ottomans so I would not say It is Ukraine related but since the Tatars were also in Crimea and the turks could be a connection there.

Couple of things. Mostar is in Herzegovina not Bosnia. Capital city Sarajevo is in Bosnia not Herzegovina. Just giving you few examples. Mostar is also divided one side is Bosnian or Bosniak muslims, the other side is Croatians. I like the video but please try to search and see which city is where and so on. It is a bit complicated but that is what it is. That Arabic flag at the beginning does not belong in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnian muslims try to use it because they converted into Islam about 500 years ago, when Ottoman empire was in Balkans. In other words, Bosnian and Herzegovian muslims are Croatians and Serbians that converted to Islam under Ottoman empire. Same goes that small place in Serbia where there are about 100,000 muslims between Serbia and Montenegro. The following cities in Herzegovina are: Mostar, Trebinje, Bileca, Ljubuski, Stolac, Gacko, Konjic, Livno, Posusje, Capljina, Nevesinje, Ljubinje, Neum, Grude, Citluk, Prozor-Rama, Jablanica, Siroki Brijeg or Brig. So all these cities in Herzegovina are not in Bosnia they are in Herzegovina. Long time ago Herzegovina was called Humska zemlja, Zahumlje and Hum. Now there is a Hum mountain above Mostar. At that mountain there is a big Catholic cross that Croats installed there. So from that Hum mountain you can see one side of Mostar where Croats are and another side of Mostar where there are Bosnians or Bosniaks Muslims. Muslims today call themselves "Bosnjak" nation, but that is incorrect because "Bosnjak" is a last name and majority are Croatians with that last name. Just want it to give you some information. Try not to call Herzegovian the Bosnian because you will get corrected and possibly get a lecture :). Next time go visit Croatian side in Mostar you will love it. The Bosniak Muslim side looks like you are in Saudi Arabia. Totally different. I don't like the way their side of the city looks, so I only went there once and never again. If you want to try "Cevapi" Bosnia is knows best for that. I would suggest you go to Sarajevo, Travnik and Banjaluka(Republic of Serbia) they have best cevapi there. All success with your channel.

Really? The last census from 2013 shows that there are 48,4% Croats in the city of Mostar, and 44,2% Bosniaks. Mostar is a Bosniak-Turkish city, the Turks established the city! The city is primarily known for the Old Town that is controlled by the Bosniaks, not about the concrete bunkers in the western part of city controlled by Croats. As far as the City of Mostar is concerned, Bosniaks control all of the eastern part and part of the western, from the entrance in the south west (neighbourhood Mahala), along the Bulevar (and the old town witin that) all the way to the Carinski most. Bosniaks also control the sjeverni logor, the only place where the city can be broadend, as well as the huge parts south of the city. Croats are all packed in the western part of the town, and cannot expand anywhere from there. Bosniaks also control 70% of the territory of the Municipality of Mostar. After the war Croats tried to alter the reality of Mostar by huge investments from Croatia, relocation of Croats from other parts of Bosnia and Herzegowina and by students from Croatia, but they failed. Mostar remains a typical Bosniak town. :) www.statistika.ba/?show=12&id=11410
