The seventieth-first episode of Boss Analysis.
In a previous episode, I covered a number of bosses I consider scary for various reasons, titled "Bosses I Fear". I've decided this would make for a fine sub-series in a similar vein to Bosses I Hate...
Today's featured boss comes from the never-ending waterfall of misery, Alundra on the original Sony Playstation...
Bosses are naturally scary and intimidating: they're (usually) powerful and they (usually) tower over the player character. But it takes something especially frightening to get to transform me from the brave boss-slaying warrior I usually am to a cowering little girl hiding in a corner. Today, I'm focusing on the bosses that I fear the most.
There is no one true way for boss to be considered scary by my standards, they come in all shapes and sizes and skins. (Definitely skins) Perhaps the boss has a disgusting, unnatural design that puts barf bags back in business. Maybe they do horrible, unspeakable things to your character if they get a hold on them. Don't underestimate the power of music and what it can add to the atmosphere either, or maybe they simply dish out huge damage and I'm constantly worrying I'm going to make that single mistake that gets me killed.
Please note that fear is a very subjective topic, and as such, what makes me want to run for the hills and beyond might have zero effect upon you whatsoever and vice versa.

And after all that scene at the end, Beaumont has the nerve to barge in and go "Would you fucking die quieter, I'm trying to sleep"

I always wanted to play Alundra as a kid. I saw it in magazines, kept checking the store when it said it was going to release, but I never saw it. Eventually I gave up looking for it.

Me too! Expect that I *NEVER* had the chance to even hear about this game until about some 10 years ago and then *bang*, seeing a video about games of the PS1, Alundra was there and I was like "Hey, wth, how did I not know this game?" and then when I finally beat it, I was like "Man, why did I not knew this game?"

Dang I feel so bad for Kline. He was such a cool dude. At least we put him out of his misery but still. As for Giles a part of me wants to believe that the bad guys were implanting those thoughts in his head and I do feel kind of bad for him especially after he transforms. However he's also so flipping slapable

This Alundra game seems to be giving bad chills. At least to me. Whatever you do, someone will always die, no matter how strong brave they are. The atmosphere does not help at all.

Nemesis from RE3 original scared me as a kid. He was a significantly greater threat than anything in the series up to that point. He's way faster, even exceeding the player character's speed, has a deadly arsenal of attacks including an instant kill move, and is extremely tough. Taking him down once doesn't end the fight, he will get right back up and continue attacking. And he pursues you all over Raccoon City. He scared me to the point that I feel dread just hearing the music indicating he's nearby. So yeah I feared Nemesis.

I always believed the Soul leech to carry the Werewolf Transformation with it. Once it invaded your soul you are stuck with the werewolf if you want it or not. Considering that Ronan is very much connected to Melzas I wouldn't deny that a "miracle healing" of the werewolf curse would have been a thing if Giles and Ronan actually were successful.

The Mary Skelter series' signature enemy type really lives up to the "Nightmare" name they're given. They all have the ability to chase you around their territory until they are defeated, can regenerate wounds if you haven't destroyed the Cores, move in real time in the overworld with themes deliberately designed to sound as if your game's bugging out and can cut in line in the battle turn order. As to which specific Nightmare I find the creepiest, that would be the one corresponding to the Devouring Armada. Unlike quite a few, the D.A. Nightmare wasn't there from the very start. Instead, as you defeat the three guardians they each get grabbed by the mastermind and forcefully grafted into this abomination. You'll have to do an entire survival horror segment with your emergency fourth team just to render it vulnerable. When you do fight it, you can see that whatever their leader did to them was best left unmentioned because two of its hosts are rotting corpses. Even worse, the last one reveals during the final battle that the mastermind that warped her like this was *her brother*

Yeah, this is some miserable writing. In a good way, I felt invested in these people and their struggles with this seemingly unstoppable abomination despite not having played the game myself.

Persona shows us that monsters within the mind are the worst of all, and I have an aversion to bosses that devour the player like Andross in Star Fox or Gaping Dragon in Dark Souls. This also reminds me of the possessed Mauri fight in Lunar 2, who has to be fought both inside her mind and outside of it simultaneously, mutating into a hideous multi-headed serpent with each head hosting a delusion within Mauri's soul. All because she accidentally drank the blood of the dark god Zophar.

Perhaps another reason why you’re put off by the werewolves in Alundra is because unlike with other versions, these ones can transform into monsters during the day! At least with other werewolves, you only have to worry about them once, maybe twice a month, but in the world of Alundra, an attack can happen any time, by any one…

18:30 A similar thing happens in the fight with the giant lizardman, if you're at the very bottom of the screen they can't touch you. Unfortunately the boss can regenerate his health so it's not fully cheesable.

I guess besides emulating it, it's like $10 on the PlayStation store, but only for the PS3's store. (correction: It's actually $6 and you can still download it just fine as of now.)

Every time you post something about this game, I find it very interesting, but at the same time this game looks like it's too bleak for me. I need some sort of catharsis from playing a game, which usually comes from hurt / comfort situations in games (to me, at least). And this game seems to only provide hurt

That's exactly why the game has haunted me for so long. Eventually, good triumphs over evil, but there's so much misery along the way, and many of the characters get no happy ending.

One interpretation ive heard about giles dream is that since he is very religious,s his nightmare take the form of hell. Overall despite all the wrong he`s done, some part of me did want to save him and its a tragedy that he ends up being too doctrinated to reach out before its too late.

The videogame that is Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure needs to be covered at some point as there is material there for Boss Analysis and other categories. Could even get a story about young Git time playing it back in the 90s when was released on the Genesis/MegaDrive and SNES.

Hey Mr. Git? I've been a long time watcher of your channel for over five years now and I love your analysis on bosses. And that gave me the idea to do a boss analysis video of my own, tackling a specific kind of boss on mind, heavily inspired by your series. So I just came to ask if I could have permission to make said analysis video? Credit will be left where due.
