Great you fixed it James and I could load the two patches but I have a few remarks. There was no sound coming out from ambient patch because the send/return block was activated !! If you have not connected the send and return then you will not hear anything. Deactivating the send/return solved the problem. The second patch the recti stack came only out of the right channel because the mix was set to pan l/r and the a level was zero !! and the b level 100 so only 1 channel. Setting the a level to 100 gave a stereo sound. I deactivated also the send/return on the upper string (left or a side). I liked the ambient patch and I am not a metal guy 😀

Boss make my favourite guitar tones. I know many people dislike not having sounds based off of existing amps, but they're good sounds (as you already mentioned), and sometimes it's nice to sculpt your own tone instead of copying what has been done many times before.

I found that saving deal as well on my SY 1000...sound outwins...I'm in agreement with you there...because even if some of the things that come off as would be completely annoying, the point you make of getting the sound you are wanting right away with the effects, plus the amp tones being really desirable makes it worth it, because we all know once you get a preset done for a particular song, then you just keep it, and never have to worry about tweaking it again...thanks for covering this pedal...was considering getting an Orange Crush combo, but probably doesn't fit for the gigging stuff, doing so many different cover songs...

Thanks for the video! Very useful! Unlike what you said about the hexagonal icons in the user interface, I do like them, because they don't mimic real analogic pedals, but they just represent the effect, giving the idea that these processors are a new way of making effects, and not just a copy of the old style. And also about the fact that there are just 23 amps, compared to other machines that have even 150, I prefer quality over quantity, and after all 23 are not so few. Said that I don't own this machine, so there are just my thoughts.
@ChilledGuitarReviews

You only need 2 or 3 GOOD amps really. I own a Kemper which gives me access to virtually any amp ever made yet I still only use a few. I can make my way around the UI fine but I've found for beginners/more casual players the closer your UI functions to a real physical signal chain the easier it is to get to grips with.

Thanks for the review. I had a GT1 and Katana and still have Boss WAZA AIR headphones for playing on the deck. I went to a Pod Go for about a year, but now switching back to a Boss and going to get one of these. I like a pedalboard with an up facing FRFR for stage so I can hear it, but the Pod is a bit of a finicky pain with the volume presets. I'm a 30 year IT guy and can't seem to do anything to fix the volumes between patches and snapshots. Sounds are good on it, but I've always been partial to the Boss tones and Tone Central. Studio Rats also has some great settings on their channel for Boss gear. The Pod Go has a lot more amps, but hell, as a gigging guy I use like four amps tops in my Pod with multiple snapshots on each. Most were things I would never use to be honest.

I hear you mate, honestly no matter what modelling product I've used I've never found a straight forward way of volume levelling across patches or scenes. Its just been a process of adjusting each one manually by ear. I'd love to see a global compression/limiter on some of these products, it would be more useful IMO than the Global EQ.
@algrundau9441
@algrundau9441 Жыл бұрын
@@ChilledGuitarReviews I have a dumb question....I have had similar issues with volume levelling across patches and screens...You then mention it might be remedied by a global compressor/limiter? So my question is.....why not do that externally? Have an actual Compressor/limiter AFTER the modeller. Would that work? I have seen guys put graphic EQ's in FX loops and even after a floor modeller. Could your "global compressor idea" be attempted the same way? I ask because right now I don't have a dedicated compressor but see them pop up all the time used. I may pick one up just to give this a try. Have you tried that yet? Should I give it a go.? Cheers.

Thank you for this great review with pros but also cons. Very informative 👍 I am just a kind of life-long beginner and have no experience with pedal boards and different amps. For me, the gx 100 is perfect as it is easy to use and the amp models are not overwhelming but sound very good I like all the effects. Creating a preset is really very easy and straight forward, especially with Boss tone studio app. I just miss a button for clearing all amps and effects to get a blank preset to start with from the scratch. 😢 On the other hand, the splitting into two effect branches with different amp models is also something that I think it a pro you missed out to mention…but maybe it’s is standard with the other amp modelers.

Thank you for watching and the kind comments! For me Headrush is still the absolute king for UI and ease/enjoyment of use, the split signal paths on this unit are great however and allowed me to run a speaker emulated signal to my FRFR AND a non-speaker emulated signal to a Power Amp/2x12 Cab simultaneously whilst recording for this video!

Amazing video man. Liked, saved, subbed. Could you shed some light on the looper? Does it allow multiple footswitches (like a 3 switch looper) and do the recorded loops carry over when you change presets/preset banks or are you stuck in just one patch?

Bit of a late question... I recently purchased one of these used, and I'm worried I received a broken one... When I touch the knobs under the LCD screen, it does two things. Grounds the signal path, like when you touch a metal part of the guitar (It does this when I'm not touching the guitar). I also hear scratching noises. Not when I turn the knob, but digital scratching just by rubbing the top of the knob. Have you experienced any of these issues? I'm also getting more noise than I would expect, even when using pretty low gain. It's loud enough to be heard even in the cleanest of patches.

@AndrewWhite-lx6df

That seems like a very balanced view of the product. The only thing I would perhaps take issue with is the need for more amp models. Of course, I accept that many people will always want models of actual valve amps and they'll fret about the accuracy of the tone reproduction, but I think we're moving beyond that now. Digital amp modeling is now so good that why shouldn't we use the technology to create original, or idealised, amp models? Things like the X-amps are idealised digital amps using the latest technology and as you found with the X-Mod amp, they're just as good as the models of actual amps. Personally, I don't care what the amp model is, as long as it sounds good, and as you rightly point out, the amp models in the GX100 are all superb.

Hi James. Really liked your vid and appreciated your balanced assessment which I found very informative and very refreshing. Weird that you have to download separate software to load IR's, and odd that Boss only gave 16 IR slots (eg my Pod Go has 128). My only observation on your vid was that whilst you said you were really impressed with the GX100 tones, it was only the two ambient and metal patches you showed on your vid and as I'm not a metal player & much more of a blues/classic rock guy, it would have been great if you'd widened this this a little to show some different tone examples, especially eg Marshall crunch, Vox and Fender type tones. Those light crunch tones especially are the hardest to convincingly get with MFX.

Hi James, thanks for a very balanced review. My question as a relative beginner to fx is whether I could use this device to record high quality (semi-pro level perhaps?) sounds by going direct into my audio interface (can’t mic an amp where I live, for all the typical reasons). I’m getting a lot of advice to buy software plugins but because of budget constraints I am hoping this one unit can accomplish both purposes - live and recording. Any advice would be welcome, thanks.

I think a few things most fail to realize about the GX100/GT1000/Core is where we feel that corners are being cut or lack of pretty graphics or having to use a separate program to download IRs are done intentionally to save on DSP usage. I'll take the lack of certain conveniences for seamless/ zero latency switching and the incredible sounds and tones. As far as the lack of amps/cabs selections ...how many do you really need to create a great tone? I think the amp foundations are there..now go create your sound!! Hi James. I'm new to your channel. Really liked the video and look forward to more. I have a couple of questions. If you've used the GT1000, how would you compare the 2 units? All the documentation I've seen states that the GX100 has more effects than the GT1000 (can't remember exact number... 14?), do you happen to know what the extra effects are and where I might be able to get a complete list for both? And any idea if boss plans on adding these extra effects to the GT1000 as a firmware update? Sorry for all the questions.

Hi James-great review, thanks! Forgive the newb question, but I recently started gigging again after almost a decade and I’m looking for an affordable“entire setup in a box” solution. Lugging around my JCM 2000 and Orange 2x12 isn’t really necessary or an option for lots of shows and, even more importantly, I want to be able to simplify the on-stage performance in terms of effects pedals. The idea is to be able to craft my tones in my own and play them through any amp available at venue, and also be able to have easy accessible presets for all my effects from song to song (or part of song). Is this the unit for me?
@ChilledGuitarReviews

Hello mate, i was in a very similar position in 2020 coming back to serious writing/playing after a 9 year lay off! You could pair this modelling unit (Or any modelling unit like it) with a simple pedal based power amp like the Harley Benton GPA-100 and you'd be able to drive any normal Guitar speaker cabinet such as a 4x12. Just make sure you disable any on-board Cab Sims or IR's or it wont sound right. Alternatively you could pair this modeller or any like it with a powered FRFR speaker such as the Headrush FRFR112. Either setup will be more than enough for gigging/rehearsing. Just remember that pedal based modellers like these will not drive a standard guitar cabinet on their own . Hope this helps!

I'm thinking of getting one of these to replace my POD Go and I was looking at this or the MX 5. Its interesting that you think the touch screen is rubbish but Tony McKenzie, who is one of the most difficult person on the internet to please, really likes the touch screen. He thinks it is far better than the screen on the MX5. The reason I want to replace the POD Go is frankly, the ease in the editing of a patch and since the MX5 also does not have any editing software, I was really leaning towards this unit. The last bit that I wanted from it was the ability to plug in both an acoustic and electric guitar at the same time, which apparently you could do on the GT-100 and also the MX-5. You mentioned that it does have good acoustic sims for electric but you don't specifically mention any patches that are made directly for an acoustic guitar. I have 2 hybrid guitars that have both electric and acoustic output, and I would really like to to send both into the processor with 2 separate signal paths to use in a gig. I know this is a long question for a year old video, but I'm reluctant to buy anything until I make sure it can meet all my needs. Thanks in advance Alan

Hi mate, i'm not familar with Tony Mckenzie but do you know if he's had his eyes checked recently? 😂. The touch screen is useable but as I said in the review, think early 2000's Nissan.... @@ChilledGuitarReviews Thanks for the reply. I'm surprised you haven't heard of Tony McKenzie. He's the Brit who disassembles all the gear he reviews to show how it is put together. Very long videos and not a whole lot of actually showing how to use the gear. But he is very hard to please and usually when he does like something at least you know it is probably well built. Anyway, I've tried the Line 6 route, and after all is said and done, they are still confusing to work with to find things and edit and get to them to do what I want. That's why I am looking for the modelers with touch screen editing and have narrowed it down to the Boss and Headrush. Actually, I decided to order the Boss, mainly because of the ability to edit via the software and will probably just use the screen for tweaking. Thanks again for the response.

Despite all of the downsides, it is still tempting me really hard, and I only learned it existed yesterday. My focus has been on getting its counterpart, the GT-1000 Core. I anticipate that if I buy one of these, I will be able to circumnavigate its flaws and find the times and interfacing that I’m after. It wouldn’t bother me whatsoever to have this with the Bluetooth adapter and control it from the iPad I currently own (and am watching the review from). That alone would be a marked improvement over my present Boss modeler, the ME-80. I also have a Zoom B1X-4 whose own features are way more limited than this thing.

Fantastic review. But I have a question (and this isn't just for you but many of the reviewers): Why does noone mention the lack of custom defaults? When I got the GX-100, I instantly recognized it was pretty much the only modeller I needed and put my others up for sale, including a Pod Go. However, the Pod Go has this unit beat in one important way - it is easy to copy and paste a given model block with tweaked settings. Additionally, you can setup models AND presets so that whenever you go to a new one, the thing is set exactly how you like it set. With the GX-100, every time I add in a new amp or a new OD pedal, it is set to its default setting and I need to tweak it from scratch to how I like it. Luckily, this is not hard to do but it is irritating. I wish this at least had the stompbox mode from the GT-1000 or something like that. Also wish it had the custom naming/coloring of stomp switches like the Pod Go. But these really are minor gripes as the positives of this unit smash the negatives
@Nightbreed82
@Nightbreed82 2 жыл бұрын
Why not just make your own custom defaults? Reserve some user banks to store template patches. You could put just an amp model or amp + your favorite pedals with your custom settings and save them a template patches. When you want to create a new patch using with the X-Modded amp block, for example, instead of dragging and dropping from the menu, go to the X-Modded template you made previously. After you're done adding to that patch, write the final version to another user bank. That way, you always have your base templates to start with.
@moe45673
@moe45673 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nightbreed82 I can do that, sure. But let's say I decide to tweak that template later on. Say, I want to change a bunch of amp parameters on my default amp on my default patch. Turn up the gain, down the volume, adjust the sag/resonance/BMTP, etc etc. I'd then have to make the exact same modifications to all existing presets that had been birthed from that template. In the Pod Go, I could simply remove the amp from the presets and then add it back and, VOILA, new settings magically set!
