I think the similarities might come from your dry sound which i'd say a bit too dirty that it contaminated each pedal too much. @ 10:35 when the dry sounds cleaner, i can hear the difference easier. Thanks for this review.

Thanks for the demo on these Robert. It seems like Boss has taken a back seat in musicians minds these days with our quest for the perfect tone and the countless boutique pedal builders claiming to have the next best thing. I myself own some boutique pedals and although some of them sound great they honestly sound no better than finding your tone in a Boss pedal. In fact you can buy two Boss pedals and combine their tones for in some cases less than the cost if one boutique brand pedal. I have not played every Boss pedal but I have owned many and still own the Blues Driver, the Turbo Overdrive, the Super Overdrive, the Chorus pedals, EQ pedals, delays, etc, and they sound great and built like tanks. And they designed the best footswitch ever in my humble opinion. Don’t you hate stomping on those metal type switches in your socks? The other brand pedal that has impressed me lately is some of Fender’s new line, notably the Pugilist Distortion and the Engager Boost for their excellent design, build quality and tonal versatility. But as for Boss they will never leave my pedal board. Cheers sir and keep on Rockin !!

It's amazing that both Dean Wareham and Zakk Wylde used the SD-1 for most of their careers. Just proof that every good pedal can get any variety of sounds you'd like.

Pound for pound, i liked the SD-1 and Blues Driver the best here. The 2nd setting adjustment kinda muddied the Blues Driver a bit but they both held up their sound and tone the best in clarity overall. I think all 5 have their place obviously and are all fine but for being versatile, those 2 in particular stood out for me. Nice demo!

Depends on the amp, and to a lesser degree, the pickups.The BD2 sounds dark through a higher gain head, much different into a Fender.As was once pointed out, balance is important if you don't want mud; the saw was " Fender into Marshall, Gibson into Fender".Much has changed over time, but the basic principle still stands when you're putting together varied elements.The pre amp is going to make clipping pedals sound vastly different.

I gotta say one thing about the OD-2… It’s not really an overdrive in the Turbo mode. It’s an amp channel. Sounds best on a fat clean with these settings give or take. Level 3:00, Tone 9-11:00, and Turbo On Gain 3:00 to full.

I don't know much but they all seemed about the same. My favorite is then none of them and all of them. I have an OD-3 and it's great. The slight difference appears to be in the EQ. I think any good pedalboard should have a nice fully parametric EQ on it. If so, you can make any of these pedals sound best. You can then also adjust for different PUP's and also your acoustic rig with piezo's. A quality EQ like the SA EQ2 is stereo and let's you toggle between 2 different EQ's if you buy the optional switch. That can be very helpful in a song. It also has presets. I also bought the $349 Empress MKII ParaEQ Deluxe. I will keep whichever I want. The Empress is easier to adjust on the fly (more knobs) and might be quieter. It is all Analog, however no presets and only mono...and expensive. There is no perfect pedal. Each pedal does good and bad things, has some good features and will lack other features. You have to get what works for you based on your rig and what you like to play. All of these pedals are very good. Consider adding an EQ, Compressor, etc. I also LOVE my Boss DD500 Delay and RCLooper. Had a really nice Fractal FM9- 1,845. It was maybe best sounding but the on-unit UI made it near impossible to adjust on the fly which I find fun to do so it's gone. My first substantial pedal board build has been fun. Flint, Boss OD3, MOOER Yellow Comp Compressor, DD500 Delay, RC500 Looper, N. Immerse Reverb + Petereson Strobe Tuner (DO GET ONE- made a huge improvement in my tuning.)

the od-3 has a more flat freq respons, great amp in a box pedal as the blues driver, but not a new version of the OD-1. The OD-1 changed a little over the years it was in produktion and the SD-1 is in it essence a OD-1 with an tone-control.

Looking forward to a Boss Distortion pedal shootout. Hope you will try what I always do and roll back the tone control all the way to see if the sound gets muddy or sings beautifully without any fried chicken. To me this goofy idea of trying the tone rollback on all my distortions really became a big deal when shooting out my high gain fire boxes. Sold most of those muddy ones and kept the ones that can give me that wonderful tone on tap if I turn up the pedal gain and roll back all the trebles.

I've used the BD2 and OS2, they are both decent pedals. I own a BOSS OD-1 (their first OD) and SD-2 (dual overdrive), they are solid pedals too, I know a lot of people go gaga when they see my OD-1 but it's pretty much a booster, no tone control. Cool video, I'm sure it takes an amount of time and detail to make and I appreciate that.

Robert's Guitar Dungeon sure is. I bought it for 30 bucks I think in ‘79. Silver screw and also only has a momentary LED which from what I’ve been told was to that you held down the pedal to check if the battery was good. Weird huh? I also have an old TC Booster that when the pedal is depressed the LED would fade out to not drain the battery, but TC made it so on an adapter the LED stayed lit when the pedal was on.

I can’t help thinking we would have heard more of a difference between the pedals had your dry signal been completely clean to start with.
@RobertWJackson
@RobertWJackson 4 жыл бұрын
I almost never demo overdrive pedals through a completely clean amp because that’s not what they’re designed for. That’s what distortion pedals are for. Overdrive pedals are designed to enhance the sound of an already overdriven amplifier. That’s how I prefer to demo them because that’s how most people use them.
@ali2ndmail
@ali2ndmail 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobertWJackson I don't think you can say that of all overdrives at all. I think that is quite misleading. The sd-1 in particular works well into a clean amp, especially for that low overdrive "break up" sound. I have no experience with the od-3 but the original od-1 was also seemingly designed to be good with a clean amp. The os_2 with the colour knob turned anti clockwise is essentially an sd-1, so same applies. Most people I know use overdrive for that break up sound, especially the ones you have shown here. To be fair i think overdrives can work well either for that breakup sound or for use in front of an already overdriven amp. My point is that for that heavier overdrive sound (which I think is what you personally favour ) all these pedal are ok but there may be some better choices available.
@RobertWJackson
@RobertWJackson 4 жыл бұрын
You’re right, it’s NOT true of all overdrives. I happen to love the BD-2 into a clean amp, especially cranked all the way up. Same with the Digitech Screamin’ Blues and also the OCD. But generally speaking, most overdrives into a clean amp sounds awfully thin and needs more balls underneath it, hence the term “overdrive”.
@ali2ndmail
@ali2ndmail 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobertWJackson the sd-1 is not bad for that cranked sound too but to get that heavier sound I agree it need to be in an already slightly overdriven amp. I can see that the blues driver might be better for that heavier sound. The pedal I like for that heavier sound is the mxr distortion +. It's an oddly named pedal because to me it sounds like a heavier overdrive or fuzz ather than a true distortion.

I think people get confused with overdrive pedals, these are not tube screamer pedals. Apples and oranges really. These are all of the same type of fruit 🍎. These pedals produce an asymmetrical wave patter, they are better in my opinion if you are on the quest for higain, asymmetrical overdrives work better with SS amps too since they are asymmetrical as well. If the OD3 is supposed to be like an OD-1? Man not even close, the mxr is closer. I have tube screamers as well, they are just different.
@RobertWJackson
@RobertWJackson 4 жыл бұрын
The OD-1 was actually the original Tube Screamer. The Tube Screamer is literally the OD-1 circuit with a tone control added to it. Boss then came out with the SD-1 to compete with it, and is also an OD-1 with a tone control. The OD-3 is a much more modern version of the OD-1 circuit.

Being that your dry signal is already breaking up, it doesnt let us hear the pedals tones for what they are. Please do one from a clean signal. Maybe even from a single coils also.

Surely the dry signal ought to be clean for the purposes of demoing the OD pedals?

Who actually uses overdrive pedals into a clean amp? That’s what distortion pedals are for.

Recently it seems like the ads have significantly increased when watching KZbin. Will not be surfing KZbin as often as I used to. The content providers need to complain if they can't control this on their channels!
@RobertWJackson
@RobertWJackson 4 жыл бұрын
That’s not the creators, that’s KZbin. They used to run mid-roll ads on any video over 10 minutes, but they recently changed that to videos over 8 minutes. Not only did they do that, but they added MULTIPLE mid-roll ads to EVERY video over 8 minutes, whether the creator had that enabled on a particular video or not. There is also no way to go in and change that setting across an entire channel, so each video has to be adjusted individually, which is extremely time consuming for 300+ videos. So give your C- to KZbin, not me.

Trust me, we’ve complained A LOT. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to matter much to KZbin.

This was not a good shootout. . U need a clean amp and clean guitar . Using a heavy guitar doesn't present the real character. All sounded like heavy distortion pedals

You aren't setting them up right, or like Zakk Wylde. Levels on 10 and Drive on 0 ,tone at 1o'clock thru a dirty amp. Levels all the way up, drive all the way down. My Marshalls sound awesome. I still want to use the awesome distortion from my Marshalls. That's why I play Marshall.

So, in 40+ years of playing guitar, you’ve NEVER tried another setting on an overdrive pedal other than level on 10, drive on 0, and tone at 1 o’clock into a dirty amp?

OF COURSE I HAVE... I discovered this setting from Zakk Wylde, also my son who is awesome on guitar. Have you ever heard of, or tried this setting?? Please try it. I didn't think at first it would work, but I found out it works great for higher gain setting, amps. By the way, just love your channel. I find it very constructive, great, informative.

Of course I have. I’m not saying it’s not a good setting in a lot of cases. But that doesn’t mean I’m wrong for liking other settings, as well.

He's right Robert. I didn't notice it the first time I watched it. I did this time. it's not life or death. As you get better you can work on those nervous ticks. Or keep it as a signature thing. I'm sure you remember the Gong show,👏 make it funny. Put the time signatures in on the hand claps. love the channel.

I’ve actually been selling gear for a living for over 15 years, and I’ve been playing guitar since I was 8 years old. I admit I’m not the best recording engineer in the world, that’s never been my forte (though I have learned a lot since I started doing KZbin). So while nobody is going to hire me to produce their next record, I assure you that this ain’t my first rodeo.
